  • What's it like to hike Picacho Peak? It's like this. Only you'll be more sore if you do it yourself.
    Music by Artlist:
    Our Last Memory Dance - Damon Power
    First Sunrise (featuring Ardi Son) - The Seventh Movement
    Sleeper Valley - Ardie Son
    Open Mic - Brynn
    Or at least that's what Shazam said on my iPhone. I swear some of those songs have different names on the Artlist site. But I deleted the edit already so I can't look them up anymore. I could, but that sounds like a lot of work and I really don't want to do it so I'm not going to. I should probably stop typing this because I'm pretty sure no one reads it and even if they did, they probably wouldn't know if I hadn't have said all this. So I'm just gonna stop typing now. Picacho Peak! Yeah, hiking!

    I camped at the base and did this hike as a teenager in the early 2000’s. The night before the hike, a group of us friends went to the bathroom late at night. Unknowingly, we left one of our friends behind in the bathroom without a flashlight. He ended up sleeping in there on the diaper changing table because he couldn’t find his way back to our camp without a light. We felt so terrible the next morning when we found out, but he did the hike the next morning and it’s now one of our favorite stories from our teenage years.

    I hiked it recently on my every other year visit to Arizona. For some reason it was a bit harder at age 55 than it was at age 35. Must have been from all the Mexican food I ate......right?

      Probably. I seemed to have the same issue. Last time was much easier. Maybe they've raised it over the years?

      If I had to rate fun scrambles around Phoenix, it would be this (favorite to least favorite): Brown's Peak, Battleship Mountain, Flatiron, Picacho, Picketpost. Picacho is fun to do, but the views just aren't as epic (and the spicy parts not as spicy) as Brown's or Battleship. I still recommend it though.

      As much beauty as Jerry and Tina show in these videos, there SO MUCH MORE amazing scenery too be seen in Arizona (or any of the other of the 4 corners States). Nevada has some great stuff too.

      May I suggest a few others if you have time. Wave cave in the Superstitions is my go to when friends come in from out of town. If you’re heading up north, possibly Fossil Creek or Hanging Gardens at West Clear Creek. If your around Sedona Soldiers Pass or we just did a backpacking trip to West Fork. Google these and you may have to extend your visit to our beautiful state! And Jerry, thanks for taking us along again, hope all is well! Happy Hiking!

      It's got a bit of scrambling to it and it's not easy, but it's not that bad either. If you don't have a problem with heights and can make the elevation, go for it.

    As this kind of being my home mountain, he is NOT lying about the downhill after the saddle section being steeper than it looks. The cables aren't there for looks, it would pretty much just be rock climbing in a lot of sections without those there and as always the GoPro makes it look flat lol. Sweet hike but be prepared for a tough workout and to be scared for your life at a few parts, particularly at the spots at 2:40 and 3:30

  • @MNRick041
    @MNRick041 2 місяці тому +2

    I did this a few months ago, I didn't have a lot of difficulty with it but I do remember the disappointment of reaching the saddle and then losing most of that elevation gain in a short amount of time.
    IMO seeing it on video makes it look scarier than it really is, I'll probably do it again on my next trip to AZ.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 місяці тому +2

      I think I said a lot of four letter words the first time I got to that saddle. I do not like to give up elevation gain.

I mean Eric and the other crazies... do any of them have a youtube channel? Thanks Jerryee.

      Old Eric gets out sometimes, but seems to have been domesticated quite a bit by his girlfriend. Young Eric is probably hanging off a cliff in Sedona right now. Last time anyone saw Nick he was paddling off a waterfall somewhere in the backcountry. Hopefully by this fall my arm will be back to fully functional and I can hang with them again.

    Hope the arm is getting better. I do enjoy the channel a lot, helps me get through longer days at work.
    One thing I'd been curious about is how much you prepare for longer trips, or if (when you're not injured/recovering) you're usually active enough to not need extra preparation. This getting older guy really wants to get back into hiking but I'm gonna have to prepare some for anything more strenuous. Only good thing I have going for me is I don't have a lot of weight I need to shed, I just need to be in much better shape, this whole working on a computer all day thing doesn't help :D

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 місяці тому +1

      For the more strenuous stuff, I try to get in some training. Best training is hiking, but when I can't do that, I'll use a stair stepper or just a step box. This hike was actually a training hike for stuff coming up. I'm lucky enough to live in a city that has plenty of mountains in it, so finding training hikes isn't hard. Well, at least until around now when the temps start getting stupidly hot.

    Very funny with the catch fences for careless hikers, I've never seen anything like it in Europe. It might be a wonderful spot for a via ferrata instead of these fences.
    But nice hike and nice video,
    many thanks from Germany
