After moving from a tropical country (which means constantly having to water your plants) to Sheffield, I killed a few plants from drowning ("overwatering" is understatement). So I started to learn more about how to care for them and found your brilliant channel. I absolutely love your sense of humour and this is probably the best video of yours I've seen. Hi Mr Sheffield. Am I in a pickle. We adopted a kitten on the 10th Dec. He is so very naughty. He doesn't eat my plants, thank goodness, but he does excavate the soil & knock them over. So I have soil everywhere. Iv had to leave the mess, as for the last 3 weeks iv had diabolical sciatica. At the point now, where I can't see my plants for broken pots n mess. I have been out today though. Just to a Costa with my youngest who had abdominal surgery 2 weeks ago. So hopefully, things are going to get better for us both. Heading off to watch the Oxalis video as we bought one of these 2 years ago and planted it outside (it said it was for outside) and it died over winter, it was a proper beauty too, I was so sad!
This is a great video!!! Loveee this advice for springtime- especially as someone who lives in a colder climate. ALSO this is so entertaining in the perfect way 😌 I absolutely lost it at “I’ll pull his trousers down” comedic gold
2:46 Do the leaf get stuck from low humidity? Wrap it in a wet paper towel slightly warm it will unfurl ; clip the end of the towel off of the leaf to keep it on if it won’t stick to its self.
I had to pause the video I was laughing so much. This is exactly me at the moment! I literally have a naughty plant room for all the sad plants I am (hopefully) going to fix with your help
Spider mite: I first used Diatomaceous earth in my chicken coop to reduce the chance of spider mites investing my chucks. When I had fungus gnats I sprinkled some on the soil of my plants, as well as watering from the bottom. Diatomaceous earth works by being abrasive and scratching the insect exoskeleton causing dehydration. Being mostly silica, quartz, it is safe for the plants.
My peace lily (you made a video about them... a while ago), was looking pretty bad for a while,. it had stopped flowering, and the leaves were dying off, getting mottled yellow and I thought maybe it had gotten something. So, anyway, I cut off all the ugly leaves, pulled it up, cut off half the roots and replanted it. It was sad for a bit and nothing happened. But now it looks great and it's started flowering again. :)
I just added a lavender tradescantia, a fluted jade, and a Rex geranium to my collection to brighten things up. Great tip on cleaning. My snake plant could probably use a good wipe.
When I first moved to Virginia 3 years ago I had only brought 1 plant with me my 25 year old plumeria. Within the first week I knew I needed more. I was in the supermarket and found an angel plant and bought it. It was in a small plastic pot and 3 years later I thought it looked sad so I decided to repot it. I went up 3 sizes but was amazed because the roots had totally taken over the small pot. It took half an hour to cut the pot off. I replanted it and the next day it was standing tall and it actually looked happy! That poor plant was in misery but never gave up. It’s happy now!
This was a hard winter, half tlway through o gave up on my plants and stopped caring for them and watch to see who would survive. Only lost a few. Most are on the comeback though.
Fun video as always. Your video of the rootbound plant and your comment about not ripping apart the roots well .... Almost 2 years ago I took a funeral peace plant from a 3 inch pot and put it into a 6 inch pot (didn't know that might have been too big then). It just keeps putting out leaves and spread into the whole diameter of the pot. Recently quite a few leaves were turning yellow so I figured I needed a repot. When I pulled out the plant I discovered I tight bunch of roots with little dirt. The roots were shaped exactly like the original pot. They never spread out at all into all that new soil. I had to ":rip apart" the roots. They were tight and awfully long in that little imaginary pot. I divided the plant into 3 plants and put 2 back in the pot I had just dumped and one in a smaller pot to share. I usually tease out some ends when I repot a rootbound plant but don't know what happened here. It was quite a surprise to see.
I've found a good trick for stuck philodendron leaves. I put them on the sink in the bathroom and run the shower hot for 20 minutes. When I'm done running the shower I will turn it off and leave the door closed and leave my sticky leaved babies in the bathroom to enjoy the humidity until it dies down. It almost always gets the stuck Leaf unstuck
I have heard it's a humidity issue for philos that have trouble unsheathing their leaves. If you take a warm washcloth and gently hold it over the stubborn leaf spike, check progress, warm up wash cloth, repeat ...the sheath will open took about 10 minutes . in a couple of days the leaf will open. Both my pink princess and prince of orange needed this assistance over the winter.
I had a philodendron glorius and white wizzard also get a stuck leaf while I was on x-mas holiday. when I came back and noticed I gave them a fine mist and put a clear bag over the leaf to increase humidity. I had to help the leaf a little bit and the white wizzard leaf is a little bit damaged and deformed. But both leaves unfurled eventually, the glorius leaf looks actually pretty good and the wizzard is already pushing a new leaf. I´m just waiting for the weather to et a bit warmer to spray off my bigger plants outside, danish weather is just not there jet.
That last plant, forgot the name in English already. I used to have those as a kid. One of the first plants I ever had. They thrived for many many years. :) Never had any problem with them at all.
The unfurled leaves could be imo from my own experience is underwater. To help to unfurl them hot water in a bowl a cotton napkin soak it in the water and then pull it out of the water and make sure to let it cool down but warm. Wrap the napkin around the leaf that is stuck for 2 min and it should help. I would like your own opinion
My Philo has baby leaves get stuck during winter and I just let them sit and take their time. One took about 3 months last year. I've gently pried them apart before and had luck with that, but overall I just leave them or give them outside light as much as possible.
I love your videos. You crack me up as well as give great advice and methods. My 15 plants certainly take a hit in the winter in Iowa. They are just now starting to perk up a bit. The groundhog was right! Spring is coming! It feels great!
I had a stuck leaf for 3 months once. Google said it was because of the low humidity. I steamed my plant with my face steamer (5 inches away from the plant) every night and in 3 days he began to open. You can also place a warm wet paper towel on the leaf for a few minutes every other day and that should also help
a lil spray of water helps a stuck philo leaf release sometimes. but it doesn't solve that issue where half the leaf refuses to uncurl/harden off and just sorta wilts instead. my current hypothesis is that this takes place when the struggling leaf made its life plan under brighter light conditions than what is present at the time of attempted unfurling.
I never comment but I just wanted to thank you for your channel, I used to suck with plants but now I can grow (almost) pretty much anything. I recommend you to my French friends all the time (even tho they hate me when they discover it’s in English 😂) And I love your humor 🪴 my plants look absolutely awful in winter too, can’t wait for spring 🙌
your channel content is so down to earth compared to the other UK ones who have their house always 20 degrees Celsius even in winter ..(for their plants)...they must be minty to maintain such big houses hot all year round! :D would you keep the heating and humidifiers on, even at night or/and when you're not home??

I thought i was going a bit crazy as i couldnt find anything anywhere! Your videos are very entertaining and informative, thank you! Love from just up the road in Glasgow :)
Unfurling leaves, at least on a philo, is a sign there isn't enough humidity which is pretty common problem in the winter with the heat on in the house. In the winter, I'll slap a humidity dome over smaller plants, or stick a moss pole in the pot if the plant is bigger. Even if it's not a climber the humidity from the moss helps a lot.
I watched your oxalis video last year when I got mine and it never entered dormancy! I love that I’ve been able to enjoy it all year but sad that I can’t break it apart to give to friends because it’s not dormant yet. I got super pretty flowers this winter. So cute.

I don't want to lose my plants as I can't water them, but at the moment, life is a downer. I do really enjoy your funny videos, you have a lovely house. Thanks to all xx
Put small pine cones as top dressing on soil. He will lose interest due to smell and texture
It’s a battle I’m not familiar with unfortunately
I keep all of my houseplants at the office for this reason!
@@uzmaali9746bless u honey. I do have a philodendron narrow escape on a moss pole. The kitten was jumping on the pole n dancing on top, bizarre lil thing. I have managed to climb all the rubbish n put lemon juice on the pole (shop brought one, plastic pole with coir round it) lemon has stopped him messing with that one at least. Roll on his last vacc's mid March n he can go out. Thanks for the comment hun. Xxxx
@@lyndseywilliams3895I had sciatica that lasted 6 weeks. My son took over the plant watering for me. I'm grateful for his help, but I had quite a few plants die during those 6 weeks. I hope you are better now. Sciatica is no joke!
Thanks for your videos they are enjoyable and informative at the same time you do a great job😀👍
Thank you 😊
I enjoy watching your videos every day. I'm always learning. Great news, I got rid of my fungus gnat too, thanks to you and nematodes. You to rock!🎉
That is awesome!
I'm a seasoned grower/collector and I love your vids. Not only do you have great information but you're hilarious 🤣❤ tyfs.
I appreciate that!
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching talk to us all about our plants and how they can be revived when they look dead 😵. And this is what I really really like about you your complete honesty and showing that you to have disasters with some of your plants. Well done your man please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
Thank you 😊
I'm in zone 8b and that shamrock plant ☘️ grows outside in my yard. I planted mine under my lilac bush it gets dappled sun. You may have luck growing it outside, too. It dies back and grows again in the spring.
I need to try that
I enjoy cleaning my plants, it's a sort of meditation when I concentrate on getting rid of dead leaves and unwanted guests. Quality time with my green friends ! 😍
I have a white knight philodendron that keeps growing crispy leaves. I treat my water , thank you for that tip! I’m going to switch out the soil . It’s got lots of nodes so maybe it’s not a loss .
Thank you for all the info 🙏
Good luck!
okay, just the content I needed today after looking at my poor Fittonia and wondering why it looked crusty! out come the scissors tonight. thank you! Heading off to watch the Oxalis video as we bought one of these 2 years ago and planted it outside (it said it was for outside) and it died over winter, it was a proper beauty too, I was so sad!
I just started watching Mr. Sheffield... his videos are intertaining, great to watch along with great plant tips! 🤣
Thank you 😊
This is a great video!!! Loveee this advice for springtime- especially as someone who lives in a colder climate. ALSO this is so entertaining in the perfect way 😌 I absolutely lost it at “I’ll pull his trousers down” comedic gold
Thanks!
You need to be in film!! Absolutely a fantastic entertainer and great on screen personality.
Love it!
2:46 Do the leaf get stuck from low humidity? Wrap it in a wet paper towel slightly warm it will unfurl ; clip the end of the towel off of the leaf to keep it on if it won’t stick to its self.
Thanks for the tip
I had to pause the video I was laughing so much. This is exactly me at the moment! I literally have a naughty plant room for all the sad plants I am (hopefully) going to fix with your help
🤣
Now you are a real gardener! You mastered watering, propagating and the nutrification!
😁
Soo helpful! Almost threw my alocasia out as it lost 3 of it's 5 leaves...glad I didn't!
Thanks for sharing this valuable information!
I love love love your sense of humor!!! 😂❤
Thank you 😊
Spider mite: I first used Diatomaceous earth in my chicken coop to reduce the chance of spider mites investing my chucks.
Awesome!
Warm misting of the stuck leaf helps it unfurl after a week to ten days. Dry the leaves around it that get wet. Works for me every time 👍
Great tip!
You are so funny yet still manage to give valuable tips for us plant people👏👏 thank you 👍
My pleasure 😊
Love how you've come outta ur shell the last little while with ur channel, lol! Love ur fun personality!
❤❤❤
Thank you 😊
Trust you to ALWAYS put a smile on my face !!!! LOL 😁😁👏👏👍🥰😘
😁
I just added a lavender tradescantia, a fluted jade, and a Rex geranium to my collection to brighten things up. Great tip on cleaning. My snake plant could probably use a good wipe.
Wonderful!
Great stuff 👍
BTW, the handbook is so minimal and useful. Thanks for that🎉
Nice one thanks!
I just did this last weekend lol great plant minds think alike!~
Thank you, great humour and great info ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
i would suggest putting a couple drops of lemon into some water and use a rag to clean the leafs, it will stop any water spots :D
also the way you put the liquid fertilizer in the can was on purpose and so evil i love it hahaha
Thanks for the tip
This was a hard winter, half tlway through o gave up on my plants and stopped caring for them and watch to see who would survive. Only lost a few. Most are on the comeback though.
Omg, this was hysterical!!
Nice tip
I have heard it's a humidity issue for philos that have trouble unsheathing their leaves. If you take a warm washcloth and gently hold it over the stubborn leaf spike, check progress, warm up wash cloth, repeat ...the sheath will open took about 10 minutes . in a couple of days the leaf will open. Both my pink princess and prince of orange needed this assistance over the winter.
Thanks for the info!
3:11 is because of the low humidity. I'm in NY, air gets super dry inside in the winter&my philos act the same way.
Thanks
Love this video! Very informative but also entertaining! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the tip
Thanks, I am so looking forward to spring
Love your videos…unfurling leaves may be about temperature and humidity….philodendrons do not want to be completely dry or too cool during the day.
Good shout 👍
Thank you
I watch your videos at 1.25-1.5x the speed and it makes it 200% funnier and I love it that way
Ooo sounds fun
My Philo has baby leaves get stuck during winter and I just let them sit and take their time. One took about 3 months last year. I've gently pried them apart before and had luck with that, but overall I just leave them or give them outside light as much as possible.
You are so funny 😂 i love watching your videos 😊😊
Glad you like them!
I love your videos. You crack me up as well as give great advice and methods. My 15 plants certainly take a hit in the winter in Iowa. They are just now starting to perk up a bit. The groundhog was right! Spring is coming! It feels great!
So great!
Lol yu are awsome got me learning n laughing at the same time!😅❤
Great stuff 👍
I had a stuck leaf for 3 months once. Google said it was because of the low humidity. I steamed my plant with my face steamer (5 inches away from the plant) every night and in 3 days he began to open. You can also place a warm wet paper towel on the leaf for a few minutes every other day and that should also help
Thanks for the tip
I pay SO MUCH attention to mine ha. Check multiple times a day
a lil spray of water helps a stuck philo leaf release sometimes. but it doesn't solve that issue where half the leaf refuses to uncurl/harden off and just sorta wilts instead. my current hypothesis is that this takes place when the struggling leaf made its life plan under brighter light conditions than what is present at the time of attempted unfurling.
Interesting
I really enjoyed the most beneficial information. ❤
Awesome thanks!
Hahaha!!! Love your humour 😂. You speak the truth about our friends, the (diva) plants 🌱😛
Thanks!
your channel content is so down to earth compared to the other UK ones who have their house always 20 degrees Celsius even in winter ..(for their plants)...they must be minty to maintain such big houses hot all year round! :D would you keep the heating and humidifiers on, even at night or/and when you're not home??
Thanks!
I found your channel as i was searching for planterina, i was wondering where Amanda had gone, and you did a great video about it, thank you for that! I thought i was going a bit crazy as i couldnt find anything anywhere! Your videos are very entertaining and informative, thank you! Love from just up the road in Glasgow :)
Thanks!
Thanks!
I watched your oxalis video last year when I got mine and it never entered dormancy! I love that I’ve been able to enjoy it all year but sad that I can’t break it apart to give to friends because it’s not dormant yet. I got super pretty flowers this winter. So cute.
You can probably still divide
@@SheffieldMadePlants ooooh okay! I’m gonna try it maybe today or tomorrow. I’ve been wanting to take a look at its roots anyway. “Pull down its trousers” as you say. 🤣
