I guess I need to point out that these two pedals are different animals. The Zen is trying to emulate a "D" style amp (keep in mind there are variations in D style amps) and the Dover is trying to emulate a germ fuzzface into a tube driver. As I mention in the description, this is how "I" set them/use them. I'm not trying to get them to sound or feel the same but in my gear travels I notice that they can cover similar ground. This vid is for folks who trying to make a decision. I hope it answers some questions and at least helps a bit with that decision.
If you stack these with both of them on, it produces great results. Feed the Dover into the Zen, vary the gain on both until you get the desired results.
For my Studio pedal board, I just ordered the Old School Build Dover Drive. This video of yours really helped! Can I ask for your opinion? I also use a BB Preamp. Do you feel the Dover (fuzz-like) would sound better in front of the BB Preamp with both engaged? Also, I am looking very seriously at one of Drybell's pedals, the Unit 67; a compressor. I normally think of a compressor in front of any drive pedals, but the Dover is a unique animal. What are your thoughts? Funny thing is, I was looking originally at the Zen Drive. A good friend used one exclusively on a number of his CD's. But there's a bit of magic sprinkled into this Dover Drive!! Again, thank you so much!!
Good questions. As for the BB in front or behind - IDK. I have not tried the two together. With compressors, I personally prefer my pedal comps before OD or fuzz but that's really just me. Having said that, I don't normally use a comp when I'm using the Dover. YMMV.
@@KenLasaine looks like some fun experimenting is on my list. The Dover Drive is the only one on the way. But as nice as Drybell's Unit 67 is, they also have a compressor that just came out called Module 4; based on Dan Armstrong's Orange Squeeze. I haven't used a compressor on my pedal board for years, but have a few go-to's in my DAW. The Unit 67 is based on the 1176, without the ability to adjust the attack for instance. The Module 4 is much more comprehensive in design and control. Makes me want to fly to Croatia just to hang out with them for a few days. If you are into vibes, the Drybell Vibe Machines are incredible. Thanks for your response. @@tjsound1258 Just to throw it out there, the PRS 'Mary Cries' comp is, so far, the best compressor guitar pedal I've ever had ... and I've had (or still have) most of them, including the Origin 'Cali 76' which I don't really dig and will probably sell at some point.
Thank you! I have a Jetter Red2, use a Strat & Tweed Jnr The Jetter has a "Red" mode, basically a clone of the Zendrive. Thinking of selling and getting the Dover. Will have to think about it.
I’ve been listening to youtube videos of the Dover Drive, wondering if it really would give me, my Strat, and my Fender amp… “Eric Johnson”, and, “David Gilmour tones”. Other demo/reviewers with virtuosity and super expensive signal chains DO get tantalizingly near those tones with the Dover. The inflated prices on Reverb are up to $250-550. now. My equipment (minus the “dead” strings) and skill is on a par with yours, and to me, the Dover isn’t all that different, or Special than most other overdrive/fuzz pedals I’ve had and know of. Certainly not magical EJ/DG in a box. I think I won’t “invest” in one at the going rate, after your video, thanks! (p.s. I have a ZenDrive)
Thanks for viewing! It should be obvious that I don't play anything like EJ. I would not spend $250.00 on any of these pedals let alone 4 bills. I got them cheap - sub $100.00 The 'red' Zen is definitely different than the classic black and white original Zen Drive.
