I have not seen a more perfect casting for a character since Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Tony Stark, because from the interviews I’ve seen of Iman & this episode, Iman is the real life Kamala Khan. Absolutely, a very valid criticism in the past was the MCU having a universal "house style" to all their projects, but each of the last few installments have felt very tonally distinct. Maybe it was the success of Ragnarok thar encouraged them to take risks and branch out.

The comic book sells well with girls, especially girls of color, so this will target a younger audience than Spider-Man Homecoming.
In fact, she's the first Marvel character in generations to get children buying American comic books, that is why you are seeing her in every medium from video games to cartoons. Getting children is important because they grow up to be adults who read American comic books. Moon Girl is also selling well with kids. Both characters are incredibly important to the survival of the comic book side of Marvel.
A lot of the comic book is about Kamala trying to navigate both her parents' Pakistani culture and American culture, so it resonates with anyone who is a second generation. My mom is from Japan, and that part of the comic book really resonated with me.

I loved this first episode. It was amazing! Also, I'm glad (and a little envious) to hear that many of you got to learn and speak your native family languages at home. It's so good that you didn't let that part of your culture slip away. My mother and I are Diné (Navajo), and she was forced to go to a boarding school when she was very young where they punished her for speaking Navajo. She came back having forgotten her language and so, when she raised us, we all only spoke English with just a sprinkling of Navajo words here and there. I know that it's not her fault, but she says that she wishes she would have put more effort into relearning her language and teaching me. I'm studying Navajo as an adult now, and it's very painful to think about how much easier it would have been for me to be able to have this important part of my culture already instead of paying for textbooks and audio CDs.

I think there's a generation of women who've grown up watching Disney who now are adults making content for Disney. And when they think about what they wanted as kids, and adults, it's not to be a princess who marries a near stranger. They want to be accepted by their parents. They want good relationships with their friends and family. To write about being artists and nerds and outsiders being a good thing.

It's actually very serendipitous that this interpretation of Ms Marvel is releasing in the wake of Encanto/Turning Red and having similar themes, since I feel that the original Ms Marvel comics didn't delve into the family drama as deep as the show.

Mark 15:35. Howdy! 🤠 I know how belated this is! I got a new smartphone, and my brother fixed my connection to "Disney+" for me, so I binged some "Marvel" series. Then I binged "Blind Wave" reacting to this series, and now I'm doing the same with your group!
You three gals all at once! Cute cat ears! 🐈
But anyway, her getting hit with a Utility Ball gives her something in common with Melissa Joan Hart's "Sabrina Spellman" so early on! But poor Kamala has to deal with being it in public like that. Sabrina, knowing that you can never make a second first impression, made an appeal to the Magic Council and won, and got to redo her first day at school, and she caught the 🏈 and tossed it back, no harm, no foul! 😎

Wow this phase is the Psychological Disorder point of Marvel. Fascinating how Endgame ended by surviving Thanos twice and COVID19, politics, etc. Made us scared shitless. It is unique, they are realistically exploring all these new shows as isolated "Post Thanos timeline". Which is unsettling as the stones continue to leave a mark in their universe.

    8.1K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome! Thanks! 😊
Notes: In case you noticed a big time gap, it was because I had to quit and do errands for Dad, such as getting the mortgage payment, buying food, checking the mail.
What is it with guys who think women doing something in a movie is "contrived"?! 🤔
Sneaking out? Why? I never did it in your context of being rebellious teens, but I have sleepwalked a few times. 😁 I have been quiet to avoid waking up people, but as a courtesy to them.
Every time they said and you said "bangle" I heard music from "The Bangles"! Whenever her name "Kamala" was spoken by them and by you, I would hear Boy George & "Culture Club" sing it!
The second floor of a two-story house equals the roof of a one-story house! My brother and I would climb to the roof of our double-wide mobile home and in the spirit of "The Six Million Dollar Man" or "The Incredible Hulk" we would imitate their leaping styles and leap down! We weren't trying to fly like "Superman"! We did try using bed sheets as parachutes.
The height was the mobile-home itself plus the air space gap underneath it. I have twisted or sprang both ankles at least 13 times! But not always for doing that. Sometimes, it was the elevated front porch.
But anyway, your insight was helpful and made it more fun for me! 😎

I was a straight A student and never did anything wrong, no sneaking out, no staying out late, always studying, always taking care of my brothers and doing my chores not to mention child labor for them, but I always talked back and was always beaten for it. So I watch this show and definitely brings me back to my childhood because if I came back late from sneaking out like that I would definitely not just let her guilt me like that. I love this show though.

They may have changed her comic origins as an Inhuman, but with Sana on board I feel like we can trust how different her powers are this time around.

Mark 32:50. Hmm. My paternal grandparents didn't like Mom teaching us to speak Korean, and when she was killed when I was four, that language influence died with her. When we lived in Hawaii, we weren't allowed to learn to speak like those natives. We didn't learn Chickasaw either! They wanted us "to be American"! Oddly enough, I don't know what I'm saying when I cuss in Korean. Chinese, Hawaiian, Chickasaw, Japanese, German, or Klingon! (Words learned from "Hogan's Heroes", et cetera.)
So people get baffled when I cuss at them! The more religious types think I'm cursing them somehow!

14:07 - Man, maybe my favorite moment of the episode is when Kamala looks at her dad after she told him it would be humiliating to go to AvengerCon with him and she just says, "Abbu..." You can FEEL how bad she feels having hurt his feelings. I'd call that great acting and with just one word! I wonder about moments like that - was it in the script just as one word? The impact of the scene relies on Iman Vellani's delivery and her face. Did the writers leave it up to her or maybe there was more dialogue written but the director decided nothing else was needed? Anyways, a great moment!

  • @victorsixtythree

  • @ShieldVids

Kamali is originally inhuman in the comics so this change is alittle disappointing but i wonder if it is possible that her powers now is a misdirect. Terrigen crystals give Inhumans their powers (that are genetic) so it is weird to have them come from a object. I wonder if the crystals are connected to that object without fully activating her power.
Her mother asking her to be herself or captain marvel and the accidentally leaving the power gloves behind seems like foreshadowing of her arc and possibly her leaving the cosmic powers behind when she gains her real powers that is from her dna.
Also the theme of going backward could mean this origin story is backwards with her getting her true power at the end.

19:50 mild specifics but ms.marvel costume. Carol didn’t get the title of captain and her current look until near 2010 in comics. Prior to that was ms. Marvel or some cases warbird.
Side thing: thing is after the original captain marvel died far before carol took on the title the person that got it was Monica Rambeau in the comics back in the 90s.
For some if wondering wth not make Monica captain marvel then? Some reasons.
    1. This was the 90s so back then the title of captain marvel was claimed by DC for their hero which today that hero is now named Shazam.
    2. Also let’s be blunt here, in the 90s male white dude (despite being an alien) died and his title passed onto a black woman to helm the title for sure irked ppl back then.
    3. The title of captain marvel juggled a lot over the years on who keeps it or canr use cause of DC claiming it until near 2010 things settled and quickly marvel didn’t wait and give that title to carol.
