  • It's time to get gardening here in our neck of the woods in Minnesota. To do that, Alan's Dad works his garden differently than most people. His horsepower is the real kind. Stub, a Belgian Gelding, and Prince, a Percheron Gelding, get to work. Leonard, an award-winning teamster throws the lines over one shoulder and under the other arm to steer the horses while guiding the plow. The horses are eager, but after a few rounds, they settle into the work. This is Prince's first time plowing, so he still has to learn the ins and outs, but he gets better each round. After that, Leonard uses the horses to feed some hay to the cows. Lastly, Leonard puts a pour-on tick and fly treatment on the horses before they go back out to pasture.

    I don't know how many times now I have seen your Dad plowing the garden and I never get tired of it. As a very young lad the horses on my Granddads farm were like these.
    Used to watch them growing up. Granddad just used to talk to them and they would do most anything. They are smart and learn. you treat them well and they will do most anything for you.

    Awesome just awesome . I just love the fact that you and your family have never modernized your farms . There something to be said for that !! Keep up the great content I'd watch everyday if I could lol

    My grandpa used to talk about farming with horses back in the early 30s. By the late 70s, he had an 806 diesel. I never appreciated how much farming evolved in his lifetime!!

    I remember when I was much younger growing up, we used a mule and a hillside turning plow. When you got to the end of the row, you could raise up the plow and flip the head over. Tractor sure made things a lot easier. 😂

    Leonard is doing a great job with Prince. He’s learning well or Leonard is that good. Either way it’s working.

    This is one of my favorite channels. I absolutely love watching Leonard working the horses. It would be great to see one of your boys, or even your daughter, learning under Leonard's tutelage before he hangs up the reins and retires. It would be a shame to see his knowledge end with him.

      Jessica and Justin are both taking up the reins, so to speak. We had a video recently showing Justin on the lines.

    Stub worked up a sweat.

    • @woodsgremlin9995
      @woodsgremlin9995 Місяць тому +1

      A lot of his sweat is from excess energy. He tends to work harder than he needs to. Also, he grows a heavy winter coat that hasn't shed off yet.

      Our vet recommended it because we have such a problem with tick borne diseases. It's called Ultra boss. The instructions say to use 30 cc maximum but I put 60 cc on the big horses. I put it on about once a month but I'll put it on sooner if we get a heavy rain. We haven't had any problems since we started using it.

      Stub is his main horse, and then he'll switch between Cookie or Prince to work with Stub. He just recently put Prince and Cookie together for the first time, and it went really well.

    Leonard, why do you have the Holstein/ Angus crosses? It seems to me that the purebreds would be more valuable? Didn't I see purebred Angus heifers in a previous video?

    • @woodsgremlin9995
      @woodsgremlin9995 29 днів тому

      Actually they are Angus/Jersey cross. I think they are a way more efficient cow. The biggest of them maybe weighs 1000 pounds and last years calfs weighed 558# for the heifers and 610# for for the steer at 6 months. Two years ago one of them had twins that weighed over 1100 pounds at weaning with no supplement feeding. Another benefit is that being raised on a bottle they very tame.

    I'm curious as to why Leonard scrapes the plowshare after each row or has the kids do it?

    • @woodsgremlin9995
      @woodsgremlin9995 Місяць тому

      That plow sat in the shed for many years and it got rusty so the soil wouldn't slde off. This year it was polished enough that I didn't have to scrape it at all.

      Leonard, why would you want those Holstein/Angus crosses instead of purebred Angus? Seems to me that the purebred would be more valuable.

  • @markflick1641

    Why do the horses get weighed?

    • @trinitydairy
      @trinitydairy  Місяць тому

      He weighs them every now and then just to see how their doing. Prince is still growing, so it's neat to see how much he's gained. Stub is 24, so it's helpful to weigh him to help make sure he's keeping enough weight on, or if he needs his feed adjusted.
