One of Thailand's top hunger-inducing recipes, 'Laap' (or 'Larp') is the herbaceous-yet-still-so-meaty combination of freshness, richness, and heart-happy local flavor, as much as any chef could ever be packing into a single plate of Thailand's best food...
Yasoton Province is one of the smallest in Thailand, yet its recipes for Laap are famous throughout the country. It has always interested me as to "Why Laap in Yasotorn is so famous??" and today, we finally (and gloriously) had that questioned answered :)
The recipe of Duck Laap at the home of Grandma Awk just miiiiiight be the best of its kind, the best in this entire beautiful country. Whatever awards were available on this day, her Duck Laap definitely took them ALL. We were so lucky to be able to hang out and chat with Grandma for what turned out to be hours... what a good, good day in Yasoton.

That woman that spoke with you.....what a wonderful, happy, beautiful, proud lady. I wouldn’t have understood a word she said but still would have enjoyed her enthusiasm and being in her presence. It was such a good day, wow, great to practice Esaan language, great to eat some crazy tasty food, and SO great to be back in a situation like this.... wow. Good timing too, as these are really the things Ill miss most when leaving this part of the country. Do you know what, I have thought about your first statement for many years, living in the US I saw how nearly everything is possible, nearly anything can be grown, but it’s just that there is a food culture in place that is so slow to change. Not only for flavor, it’s also scientifically proven that spices like this and a huge variety like this is better for humans to eat/to be eating… So why does a country with all the opportunity of the USA not include more spices in the diet? I don’t know if there is one answer but… I think people are learning :) just maybe not quickly, but it’s happening!!:)

Ahhhhhh Miss Biggs :). I will just be honest in writing back to you immediately, straight away (and thank you for allowing me this!), I was a bit nervous honestly of including those 2 specific shots because I didnt want any negative thinking about Mom's character. I knew she only meant well, but I was also hoping to only capture that, and nothing negative, in the clips I chose to include.... so I honestly breathed a sigh of relief just now reading your comment, which was the first comment to mention either of these things (her bubbly and unique character, and the 2nd round of beer). I thought that 36 minutes of video was enough or really I would have included more garden shots!! I guess, haha yes I guess this would have been one video that deserved to be a full documentary length!! @@JoelsTastyRide I had to look this up myself. Apparently it grows in Jamaica also but I don't remember ever seeing it - even though it would be hard to miss or forget! A few facts I found: Scientific name Tabebuia Serratifolia (Yellow), Tabebuia Rosea (Pink); Common Names: Poui, Trumpet Tree, Pau d’Arco, Ipê. It can grow up to 150 feet with a 4-7 ft diameter base; flowers of about 1- 4″ grows in dense clusters and the flowering season runs from January to May. I'll definitely have to be on the lookout for this one if ever I'm back on the island during the flowering season.

Joel what’s up my brother. OK thank you for bringing me to the countryside and taking a look at this spot that has this mouthwatering duck meal. My friend you are making me drool and crave that duck soup right now. My goodness I believe you when you Say how tender it is. Wow those five dishes are spectacular. Wow the crispiness of that duck. You are loving it my friend I can tell by your expression. Wow Li knows how to eat as she taught you how to make sure to eat the end pieces of that bone. I totally do the same thing with my feathered friends. That’s so awesome! I thought I was the only one that did that Ha Ha also I am cracking up right now that Li is so excited for the duck. You can tell that she loves duck so much. Ha ha I love it! Yo Joel auntie is so nice and funny. How awesome that she just wanted to hang out and talk with you. What a wonderful place to each and what wonderful people! Ha ha OK her comment was too funny she has two new kids, one white and one Chinese ha ha. She is so hilarious 😂 Wow she is so wonderful.
