- Complete build of the diorama for the HobbyBoss Dora German Railway Gun in 1:72 scale. The Dora model kit was supplied by Scale Models HQ (scalemodelshq.com?aff=3).
In my previous video I built the majority of the Dora components. In this video I put the finishing touches on the model and then build the terrain including rock faces, static grass, and a dirt raod.

Hi there, I was watching 👀your Dora builds last week and my wife was watching with me. My son, who lives in Brisbane, likes his history and building models. My wife said let's buy him this for his birthday 🎂, I thought at $300 plus dollars let's get something else anyway, I checked and for $287 Aussie dollars $327 NZ dollars-ish, and free delivery anywhere in Australia 🇦🇺 from Frontline Hobbies in Sydney I bought him this model. He got it today and told us he always wanted it and was going to buy it himself, score one for his mother 👩. I sent him your Dora build videos 📹 so he said he'll watch them. So thank you for this build.
Thanks Guy - it's always nice to get a good deal on a kit. I hope your son enjoys it!
As a returning modeller the pleasure I have had for months buying kits and using all the tips from this channel and others have shown me to achieve some great looking 1/35 scale & 1/72 scale kits has been endless. Still cannot use my airbrush properly but it's fun making mistakes. Model Nerds posts on the Dora were just memorizing and the model itself is just totally out of my league....... I got drunk last night 😇 and apparently Amazon are delivering " the Dora " Sunday morning 😳.... When my wife goes for my jugular when it arrives tomorrow, I am blaming THIS CHANNEL 🥰
Haha, have fun my friend!
I am going to have to make a rock face for mine now. I think it really sets off the model. I see you painting individual stones and I reckon you have been watching Night Shift. I find a light colour dry brushing less mind numbing.
To those thinking of building this kit it is a real mammoth build and to a certain extent quite a repetitive build as both sides of the gun are identical.
Thanks Allan. Yes, I was happy with the rockface. I dry-brushed most of the stones but picking out a few in stand-out colours works very well first I think. Definitely not all of them though :)
Dramatic and ominous piece. Very nice build.
Thanks mate. It certainly dominates my display area!
Bravo, what a nice build! The rock face is phenomenal, you gave me great tips for my own builds - thank you for that and congrats for a very well done diorama!!! 👏
Btw, telling yourself "I don't want to buy any more kits" doesn't work - I tried and I tried and I failed miserably 😁Just this morning the mailman delivered my last purchase which was supposed to be my last kit for at least three months. What can I say, I am weak, I admit it... so only two hours later I looked around on eBay, just for fun. But immediately fun turn into serious business because I came across a kit I liked ... and of course I bought it. As I said before, I am weak .don't you dare judge me! But this will be my last - for sure 😎
Hehe, no judgement here my friend :) Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate your feedback. Take care and have fun building those kits!
You absolute mad lad! This looks incredible and the detail is far beyond what I could ever achieve. I’m definitely going use this as a guide for my future dioramas. :-)
Hehe, thank you mate, I appreciate that. It was a long process and I did almost give up a couple of times, but I'm glad I stuck with it.
Dora looks great but the addition of the rock face just lifts it even further. Well done.
Thank you Glen
What a showpiece!!
Thanks!
The epic adventure has finally come to an end......or has it? Fantastic final reveal....the kit and diorama matching and bringing the whole scene together. Thanks for sharing this build, MN, it's been a journey with all sorts of little twists and turns but the eventual destination is marvellous. Will be great to see the next project in the not too distant future.
Thanks Robbo. Yeah, I might add a couple of vehicles here and there in the future. The next project is definitely underway :D
I followed the whole build. You did a great job!
Thank you! 😊
*Very good trick with the alumine foil to make cheap and realistic rocks! Your diorama is very nice for this huge (the biggest of all times?) artillery piece. 🤩👍👏*
Thanks. I can't remember where I picked up that trick but it's been very helpful. And unlike the shop-bought molds, every rock piece is different :)
I don’t be dioramas but you’ve certainly tempted me 🤔 very nice work and great looking final effect.
Thank you!
fabulous result. Great series to watch
Thank you Stuart - I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Just found this video set - binged all 5 as I just started this very same kit. Your build and diorama look fantastic, beautiful details, paint and weathering. Nice to know about the decal issue on the wagons, and the idea to build the barrel using the jacket to keep the whole thing aligned, got some other good tips as well. Great work and thanks for publishing these!
Thanks Joe, I'm glad it was helpful
Now,its finished. What a great build. The diorama looks awesome.Fantastic details and the weathering is also realy great.Keep up with your work.I am building a King Tiger now.Thinking of a diorama for it too.Stay safe and take care.
Thank you Dirk! Good luck with the King Tiger!
The fact that that is an absolute detailed beast of a kit is brought out so much better by the raw rockface behind it. Fitting end to the build series.
I've read conflicting claims that the gun was destroyed by the Germans to prevent it being captured by the Americans according to some sources or by the Russians according to others. In any case, a nice what-if twist would be to include Allied vehicles and troops on the diorama to indicate a successful capture.
Thanks Mark. That's an awesome idea - Allied troops climbing all over it inspecting things close up would be fantastic. Unfortunately I've found it really hard to get 1:72 scale figures of any type :(
It's certainly a beast ! Well done for finishing the kit , mine is in storage in the loft at the moment part done .
Pity Hobby Boss didn't supply the right tracks for the base , it ran on a specially made rail track
Yes, it would have been useful. I was looking at some 3D printed parts that might include them.
stunning diorama
Thank you James
Fantastic build, love the end result, looks great.
Thank you John, I appreciate that
Wow turned out awesome. Really like the diorama. I’m nearing completion on mine. Started January 1. It’s been fun but ready to move on to something a little smaller lol. I found some 1/72 figures from Orion. They are panzer crews but several of the poses would work with the Dora. Great job!
I know what you mean about being ready to move on! Thanks for the tip on the figures - I'll look those up.
Cant wait to start my own Dora, you are a huge inspiration!! Beautiful build and dio! Was very excited about the final build notification 🙌🏼 😄 Happy building!
Thank you! Good luck with your build!
love of detailing
Thank you mate
A quick note about the shells. Near the base of a shell there should be a slightly raised band. This is the copper driving band. Artillery shells have this ring so the copper bites into the rifle groves of the barrel to get the spin for accuracy.
Great info, thank you
What a project! Great results, MN. You should be proud of your efforts!
Thanks T.J!
A most enjoyable video. Plenty of detail and peaceful music
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it
Outstanding! That turned out so great. Well done.
Thank you John!
Great finish to a great idea. Loved it!!
I like the idea of adding the nets at the top 🙂
Thanks mate - glad you liked it
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. Happy days and model on! 😎🇨🇦
Thank you Peter!
Amazing result, very beauiful❤🎉
Thank you mate
Great job and thank you
Thank you Robin
Fantastic job. Well done
Thank you very much!
Oh sorry it looks really good 👍, well done.
Thanks :)
Beau travail c est magnifique
Thanks!
That is really good,well done.
Thanks mate!
You did a great job on this I have the 1/35 scale version from soar art I ordered it back in 2005 when it came in the mail I was excited looked at the part I loved it then it sank in I said to myself what the hell did I just do to myself but the kit is big and beautiful but it has some inaccurate parts but I am fine with that again a great job on this subject I have to find a way to display it here at my house it's still in my stash for now
That will be a beast!
Awesome. I hope your gonna add soldiers to this and I honestly believe you should add the camouflage net.
I'd certainly like to, but it is quite hard to find appropriate 1:72 scale figures :(
Can you get them 3d printed?
Possibly, if I can find the 3D models (my 3D design skills aren't up to creating some!)
You can do man, look at what you have achieved so far. There is no looking back.
absolutely amazing!
Thanks Marcos, I'm glad you enjoyed it
Just picked this up yesterday for $40
(40% off sale + Via Gift Card) The original price was $300
In any case, the Hobby shop I got it at also has the 1:35 scale version!!!!!!
The barrel for the 1:72 Scale is about 3 feet long. I can't even imagine how big the 1:35 scale one is! But if you are ever in Marlboro Massachusetts, head over to the Spare Time shop and pick it up for $900. You might need to also buy another house to display it in as well.
They also have the 1:200 Scale Yamato and Bismark.
Wow, very nice price!
Amazing need to build one myself
Thanks mate!
I had hoped for seing some figures/soldiers working and guarding, likewise one or two vehicles for the staff, garde.
But a huge and nice build 👍
Thanks Niels. Yes, I had hoped for figures too, but they just don't seem to be available. 1/72 figures are relatively uncommon and those I could find are generally in combat poses unfortunately.
@@ModelNerd Have you tried model railway, maybe there is something that can be used there
@@nielschristianwithmller138 I've had a little look, but there doesn't seem to be too much in the way of military. I haven't looked extensively though.
Very nice you've done a great job thank you for sharing your video 👍
Thank you :)
Awesome work keep up the good work.
Thank you mate, I'll try!
Brilliant
Thanks Liam. Finished at last!
@@ModelNerd I’m sure you’re glad - massive build, looks fantastic
That looks brillaint mate, really worth all the time you've put in imho. You should be dead chuffed with it (if your not)
Thank you mate. Yeah, I'm really pleased with it. I've got a couple of 3D models that I might print and add to it, but overall I'm happy :)
Can I know where do your get hobby boss it’s hard to find in my region
Btw fabulous built I’m gonna try to make it similar to your when I get my hands on the kit
It's another quite hard to find kit unfortunately. It might be worth trying model shows where they often have older kits for sale.
My only suggestion would be to build the tracks in a slight curve to simulate the curve used to swing the gun's azimuth. Otherwise a great job.
Thanks Edward. I thought of doing that but there were two potential issues - firstly it would increase the depth of the base, which is already quite large. And secondly the kit doesn't seem to be engineered to allow it to go on a curved rail. The connections to the carrying wagons are square and the overlap with the wagons below means they can't really rotate, unfortunately.
I’ve just brought this kit and will be building a shelf for it in my shed, how tall is the model once built?
The bare minimum height would be 11 inches, plus the base height (with the barrel flat). The barrel angled would be around 15 inches, and at its highest angle it would need 21 inches. It's a beast!
@@ModelNerd Thank you for measuring it. It certainly is and big model.
Looks great 👍🏼
Thanks 👍
Grat Work 👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
That is one stunning diorama. Love the finished model. I just got mine the other day, but it going to be a a few months before I start it. You mentioned 3d printed parts in the video. Could you explain what they are/were?
Thank you Andy. I didn't use any 3D printed parts in the Dora build itself, but there is a D311 locomotive that was used to pull the Dora available on Cults3D. I have a plan to print it, at some point... :)
@ModelNerd I've been looking for that. There is a Dora 3d print in 1/72 scale on Thingiverse also, which includes the D311 and also the assembly crane and other accessories. Could be worth a look, but I'll certainly look into the Cults3d files
Ah yes, that was it. There is a free one on Thingiverse and one with maybe more detail on Cults3D. I haven't decided which to go for yet :)
Awesome 👌
Thanks Anthony
Epic !
Thanks mate
👍👍👍
Cheers Robin
bravo👍👍👍
Thank you
holy shit is so huge
Haha, right? I'm currently working out how to transport it to my new house without destroying it!
🤝👍wau👏
Thanks!
Just a comment for the algorithm
You need a crew, Airfix luftwafffa, spelling, and some German infantry figures should fit to bill.
Yes, I'd like to include one but none of the figures I've found seem suitable :(
Hello MN, I've been following this build for a while now and it has finally come together!! The finished effect is fantastic. All the subtle weathering and scene building really pays off. Do you think you may do another kit with this scope and scale or will you shy away from them in the future? I'd love to see another epic diorama. Maybe some cool bases with the offbeat models you've been doing? Great work mate. Thanks for sharing your work along this journey.
Thank you Michael - I always enjoy reading your comments. I do have a 1/35 Leopold built and packed away somewhere. Once I finally get into a permanent place I may unpack it, see how it survived being shipped from Malaysia, and add it to some sort of diorama. It is probably a similar length to the 1/72 Dora. I've got a couple of other dioramas coming up too :)
👍👍👍
Thank you
