  • On October 16, 1945, Judy Garland pre-recorded “D’Ya Love Me?” for the biopic about composer Jerome Kern titled "Till The Clouds Roll By." Garland was a guest star in the film, appearing as stage legend Marilyn Miller in two musical numbers, “Look For The Silver Lining” and “Sunny/Who?” After rehearsing and filming the big production number “Who?” Garland went into rehearsals and filming of the “Sunny” sequence which was a reimagining of Miller’s big stage success of the same name. Garland’s last day of work on the film, November 7, 1945, was devoted to the ultimately deleted “D’Ya Love Me?” number.
“D’Ya Love Me?” was intended to be a part of the circus-themed “Sunny” sequence, with the song “Sunny” segueing into “D’Ya Love Me?” rather than into “Who?” as in the final cut of the film. The silent footage survives. Warner Home Video presented an edited version of the sequence on the DVD, including the silent sections which would have had the dialogue and foley effects dubbed in later.
Here is the surviving unedited outtake footage for the “D’Ya Love Me?” number, including some alternate takes not included in the edited version presented by Warner Home Video.
NOTE: Some sections are silent. This is due to the fact that most musical numbers were filmed with silent film, while the performers lip-synced on the set to playback discs. The final dialog and music would have been dubbed in later. Here, the surviving recording is synced to the corresponding footage. The dialog, if it was ever recorded, has been lost.

This is a lovely song but Minnelli staged it terribly so it’s no wonder it was cut. Judy Garland’s comical expression at the end sums up beautifully her own feelings about the routine. So glad however the footage survived as anything that turns up with her in it is so precious.

Judy's voice sounds amazing. But those middle-aged clowns with giant tail feathers are downright bizarre and totally upstaging a very thin Judy. Thank you very much for this fascinating clip.

The clowns are played by Swedish clowns Jean and Rene Arnaut, known as the Arnaut Brothers. Although uncredited, they appear in the edited movie In the walk-around at the start of the Sunny circus.

The feather shadow on judy's forehead at the end is a glaring disaster.

Judy was very thin , but the costumer did a great job hiding the fact that she was 5 months pregnant ...

I can see why it got cut. It's not special and the clowns are annoying.

They were right to cut it, bad song.

Oh, I think the song is fine, but I don't care for the staging with the clowns AT ALL.

      Yes, the staging sucks.

Agreed! It's odd that it would have come right after "Sunny." It would have slowed it down to a crashing halt. The staging is terrible, it's almost like a dry run before anyone decided what to do although that wouldn't be in full costume and makeup, nor filmed. A rare case of Minnelli totally missing the mark!
