- Promotional video for the Diagram for Delinquents Kickstarter site. The documentary will detail the impact that Dr. Fredric Wertham had on comic books, a pastime the doctor declared caused juvenile delinquency in children. Wertham's testimony for the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency resulted in the creation of the Comics Code Authority, a self regulating body that censored comics for the sake of the reading public. Wertham and the CCA have had a lasting impact on comics felt even to this day.
Learn about the history of comics and their struggle with freedom of expression. The story takes us to the present day with the recent announcements by DC Comics and Archie Comics to abandon the CCA Code for their own ratings system.
Fredric Wertham has a very stuffy mind. Do you really think that you can summarize a whole art in "books for kids" ?
This guy hasn't only work in order to destroy it, but to kill creativity and evolution ! But fortunately, his comic code is dead now, and people can write and draw what they want, to talk about truth to people that want to face it. Comics are not for kids, a big part of the readership of the 50's were WW2 veterans. Now look at the books published : Preacher, Transmetropolitan, Hellblazer, Punisher,… Long live the freedom of speech and opinion !
***** If I'm totally right about Wertham, I don't think the mangas are a good exemple, personally on the ones I read I only liked a few. They are so specialized that most of them and particulary the famous ones are only clichés. Comics have for the most part caracters that are much more authentic psychologically than shonen or ecchi, I cannot identify myself on Naruto as well as I would with John Constantine for exemple :P
Ohh, no, not by a long shot. His code is still in place, albeit modified to be able to accomodate modern views on violence as acceptable as long as they serve the status quo or help in the "war on terror". You only have to take a look at the "enourmous variety" (irony) of comic book adaptations being promoted and regurgitated for the masses by hollywood. Anyone that is a comic book fan know comics are way more deep and diverse than that and still... oh well merchandise!!!!
