      Agreed. Great content. I think it's because most people don't understand much less implement a good recovery process until it's too late. If you're watching these videos, you're already light years ahead of most people. Cheers.

    Great review! What do you think of Charles Hoskinons video lecture on how to secure your recovery phrase? He doesnt store the seedphrase physically but encrypts twice and stores it on a password manager and gmail...He stores the backups on his password manager. I thought it was really bad practise...but would like to know what you think. Its 1 1/2 though ha

    I got the cobo punch for 24.00 had my wife read back my seed to verify she can read it. The problem with loose letters, it seems like they could all fall out and then it’s useless. Engraved or punch tool means someone can’t scramble them.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому +1

      Yea the Cobo tab punch is a great deal. The advantage of this over previous cassette style devices is that the tiles are threaded in the core, so can't get mixed up.
      Overall, the pinch is great for seeds and sonething like this is ideal for something like a BIP39 passphrase.

  • @dave47663
    @dave47663 3 роки тому

    I like it but, of course, it's recommended to have 2+ copies of a seed phrase and at $99 each, that's pricey. Cheaper than losing crypto though.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      Yep, depending on how much crypto you have, the cost can be totally worth it.

  • @endthefed5304

    "...and store that capsule in a secure place..." - therein lies the rub. You need to figure out where to store this thing so that someone cannot discover it and steal your crypto.
    if it is in a safe, safes can be broken into (with a torch, typically the best safes can only withstand about 30 minutes of that attack). Safety deposit box, you need to get to it and thus the bank has to be open and accessible. anywhere else, you need to be good at hiding it.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  2 роки тому +1

      Firstly, I think most folk overestimate the risk of physical attacks like this when compared to the risk of screwing up some other backup method.
      That said, if you want to secure your physical backups, then adding a BIP39 passphrase does this very well. (Though should also be backed up, just not alongside your physical seed backup)

    So it is not possible to write the complete words in there for 24word seeds, as with 4letters only, i might forget the entire word... Most peoples native language is not English... The recovery words sometimes are a bit strange. What a shame reslly.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому +5

      For BIP39 seeds, you only need the first four letters, as every word in the BIP 39 list (only 2048 words long) is unique based off the first four letters. This is why most wallets only need you to enter, at most, the first four letters of each word. This property also holds true for the Spanish, French and Italian BIP39 word lists, though these lists are generally supported on fewer devices and wallets.

    What if you accidentally dump out all the tiles when restoring? Is there a way to put them back in order?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому +2

      You can't dump the tiles out unless you remove the clasp at the top, which you don't need to do in order to read the words back.
      If you dump all the tiles out and they are totally mixed up, then you can't recover the correct order, the seed is lost.

      @@CryptoGuide Good to know you can read the words without removing the clasp. I worry about someone not familiar with the device finding it far in the future and trying to restore without knowing about that pitfall, but that's kind of an edge case I guess.

    Have Nano X. Did initial set up and opened accounts on ledger. No crypto ever transferred to my wallet.
    Now I have purposely wiped the nano clean and am ready to re-initialize with new seed, new accounts ledger.
    I do not plan on ever recovering from the first seed.
    I will establish a PIN and will receive new recovery seed phrase. There's nothing I should be wary of going forward, correct?

    • @CryptoGuide

      Just be really sure that you removed the old accounts from Ledger Live, as accounts associed with the initial seed will not be automatically removed or updated.
      Also just be really sure not to ever enter your seed on a PC, phone or anywhere other than the Nano X itself.

      @@CryptoGuide Thank you. Further question. If when I am initializing my ledger nano x for the first time, I want to add a passphrase
      do I set it up as a "temporary passphrase"? Am confused by this. And to be clear, once the passphrase has been added to the account,
      if I lost the device and needed to recover the account, I would input the seed phrase and the passphrase at that time, correct?
      And then establish a new PIN for the wallet.

Threre are people in the forums who don't trust the banks but are suggesting keeping the seed phrase in a bank vault!
