Interesting! I've recently bought my first Raspberry Pi for a display project, but as I am a music producer I need to try to run Reaper on it. I think one of the great advantages of the Pi is that it is so easy to use one Pi for different purposes, just switch the card and you can run another dist and there's no need to worry about them disturbing each other! If you don't have lots of gear connected to the GPIO port of course...
I think until very recently there wasn’t the power- the 3B+ is quite the powerhouse, and it’s only in the last few weeks that Reaper has become Linux native and doesn’t need WINE to run, really lightening the load
Hop Pole Studios I’ve got a few slate ml2 mics. And have been thinking on how I can run the plugins for the mic emulations then go into my hardware live. This might be the ticket. What kind of latency are you getting?
Interesting solution- I suppose the latency is mostly interface dependent. I got 256 samples with the iD4 without any issue, I’m sure I could get it lower but I’ll need a little time with it to experiment. Busy couple of weeks coming up but I’ll be doing a part 2, also looking at getting windows VSTs running so there are more plugin options
@@adamsteelproducer while reaper wasn't "officially" supported, they have had a linux version for over a year for folks to test. even before being officially supported, it worked as good really good.
I’m probably going to make a portable version of this (Pretty much a laptop) with a spare interface built in. I just like building things and I was looking for a software that is less intensive than Pro Tools for my mobile setup. Love the video!
hi bro nice video ... its my first time looking REAPER and looks good ... im going to try it .... thanks a lot for share!!!! and hope in God you have 1000 DLS in your hands like a magic!!!! have a great day bro!
Thank you for a super good introduction. I just set up Reaper on a Raspberry Pi 3 B. Works flawlessly. I can even plug in my audio interface (scarlett 2i2) to the Pi, just like in the video. A few years back I played around on my linux i5 laptop, but lacking a good lightweighted DAW it was difficult. Back then it was difficult to get good VST's. But those included in Reaper seems good If I run into performance issues I could even upgrade to a RPi 4, and get a faster SD card. I will say that NOW FINALLY you can make good music in Linux. Question: Can anyone recommend a good piano VST?
I would recommend LMMS to people who are looking for cheap music production! Especially if you want to make hip hop, electronic, dance music. You van get free VST plug-ins to expand it as well
reaper has never stopped impressing me. its constantly showing how to make good software. there are few software titles that should be on a hall of fame for performance, features, accessibility, price etc - and reaper is definitely up there.
I was thinking about doing this too on a rock pi 4 but I was gonna try run ableton using either wine or a nvm software application on either kai or elementary 6 Odin
good video if you dont have a computer you can get an SD card with noobs on it it will allow you to connect to the internet and install an operating system directly onto the Raspberry pi.
Not a lot here for folks already familiar with the world of raspberry pi. Was hoping for insights into the usability of pi/reaper for recording live instruments. In fact, I arrived at this video with the thought of using a spare pi as a looper pedal, though there's plenty to figure out, there. Can Reaper be configured to simultaneously record and over looping playback?
ive been racking my brain for a few months over a way to make a sampler-looper in reaper without using Playtime, but to no avail. Any brainstorming youve done would be refreshing. on the pedal theme, my goal is to have for example a JS:Transient Controller in a pedal. It would alone with just raspberry pi (and i guess a digital interface) and have sweet switches and knobs to boot.
@@adamsteelproducer - Excellent! I'll be following your every move. And I too have similar interests to *Shane Rigsby* regarding the use of the Pi as a looper or as a master stereo recorder.
Tanks , a nice video. I think it is time for a remake with the actual Raspberry Pi 4. The new raspberrys boot from USB or USB Harddrive by default. (With the old models one had to modify the BIOS.)
Is it possible to use VSTs/plugins that I use on Reaper for Windows, on the Pi Reaper? edit: Also, is it possible to use a small pi cluster in this manner (audio production)?
I’d like to see you revisit this project & deep dive into what if any plugins will work on a Pi? Are there Linux plugins that work on the arm architecture?
How about serving wifi midi to an iPad based studio thru reaper on a Pi? Is there latency issues putting another link in the chain? Are there any emulators to run vst plugins? Or would reaper work on a windows 10os for raspberry Pi? Does that option even exist? I’m very curious due to the low power consumption of the Pi as I run 12v solar power in my home & a laptop is a heavy drain for sustained use. Another thought would be to run the Pi as network storage for bulky sound bank collections - will that work alongside reaper on same device? ~ although using a Pi in studio maybe a bit gimmicky, I reckon it’s still worthy of a deep dive review - seems like arm architecture is taking the main stage with apple... I reckon it follows that raspberry Pi could quickly become very relevant in field work or mobile studio. How did it go with plugins you tried? Do Linux plugins have an offering for Pi applications at all?
Amazing work man. Looking forward to how all of this turns out. It's awesome that REAPER works now on linux as native, but I'm concerned about all the VST plugins, and that it might be a pain in the ass to use in Linux. Have you considered using other distros like Ubuntu Mate or lubuntu? I think they have raspberry versions too. Anyways, amazing work and I hope you make more videos on this topic!
Wahhahah, I just asked all these questions when I clicked on the title :-D Now I hope Mr. Steel or someone knowledgeable will come back with some answers to these questions.
Hey, many thanks for this video!! I will go and buy a memory card to do it! any chance to have the second video? I have an old MAYA44 usb that as far as I was able to find on the internet, it is also working with LInux! so well, I will let you to know!
You, sir, are awesome! Thanks for all you do. I'm looking at a Raspberry Pi for my voice studio because it's silent. I do a basic podcast and voiceovers only. nothing complex. This demo uses the 1g device. The latest is a 4g device. I did watch your subsequent video about the plugins, but those notwithstanding, would you advise anything more than 4g or is that plenty?
I've got a project that maybe you can help me with. A raspberrypi loop station using reaper. I got the inspiration from diy chewie monsta (ed sheerans custom loop station) tutorials using a laptop and arduino. But it would be much more compact and efficient if we could eliminate the arduino and laptop by using use a raspberry pi. Watcha think?
I want to multi-track record guitars, bass, vocals with the pi if possible. My RP has an single audio jack and I have a splitter cable that will take a mic and headphones. Will the pi and reaper be able to handle that setup? Thanks.
The onboard audio on the pi is…. Not good. The whole thing is made on a super cheap budget so this “works” but it won’t sound good, you’d need an external audio interface to get any kind of useable quality imo
Don't forget to install Jack, hopefully there are other Linux music production programs ported to ARM. And what about a real time kernel for Raspberry?
Hello, thanks for the information. Great video! Would you recommend the PI for live clicks, and MIDI automation? This device (the PI) seems like a great solution for my scenario, but I am a little worried it will throw me under the bus. What are your thoughts? Thanks, again.
I think the Pi would be absolutely solid for this, as long as you don’t need any 3rd party plugins it’s perfect and should be solid as a rock. You could even get a second one as a backup as they’re that cheap! You could even program your project on your main pc and it should translate perfectly
