To be honest, our picture of the world is limited in the fact that we only know what the characters know. We don't have the full scope. So for all we know, there could've been several space crafts in space. But that also wouldn't mean that they managed to get back to earth and survive. There's endless possibilities and that's pretty fun anyways, since it's not like even we know everything about our own world.
I mean pre-petrification it was pretty much our modern world, and its not like we have multiple manned spacecraft hanging around orbit... Right now there is only one space station with crew in it, the ISS, which was the station in the anime. I think China is building/planning a station but thats far off. Obviously its not irl so there could be another but its entirely logical that there wouldnt be.
