People think aikido is not effective to use in streetfight Actually its very effective in many cases because you can mix the tecniques You just need quick reflect and fast thinking
To everyone who says that Aikido is fake u are wrong it focuses Alot on joint locks momentum and balance, when u r in a joint lock u will move with it or get bones broken and if u r already put off balance a simple push will knock u down, it definitely works whether the person is trained/un-trained or resisting/ not resisting
All of you saying akidos crap or fake. Look at Steven seasgal doing demonstration in Japan against 6 or so black belts. It's called art of peace for a reason all about defence.
If you are going to teach disarming a gun use an air soft pistol loaded and also u must simulate sound by using blanks. After watching what you're teaching and seeing you get shot 70% of the time I recommend that you shouldn't teach these techniques and you should apologized to those you have given false security. I have been doing disarming for fifteen years and when someone is truly intent on shooting even if you think you are pro 30% of the time you will be shot 70% cut if it is a knife The human being is not stupid or static
Tudo depende do objetivo.
+evilro3345 This is to prevent serious injury to the attacker. If you don't think it is effective, go to an Aikido dojo and see if the instructor lets you join, then you say this again when they are practicing on your hand.
+evilro3345 Jigoro Kano himself sent some of his best students to practice under Ueshiba-sensei after watching his demonstration. This must tell you something.
Aikido teaches you to adapt to the very moment you are in. At any point of a circumstance or in the middle of technique is is important to accept and blend, that is the "trick" to Aikido and lots and lots of practice. "Repetitive motions make perfect"
in all fairness, I will say although I have gone beyond these moves in Israeli arts, I will give credit for good effort and good demonstrations of what was the foundation of all modern arts. yes they are not showing resistance but are showing the basics of which every other arts got their first start. I feel we should give them respect.

@MrMartialartsfan Look it up, i might be wrong, but when i took Aikido classes, compared to Judo they emphasized the circle motion a lot more because the motion requires the least amount of energy expenditure. Aikido techniques are combinations of circular movements. You don't need to be the strongest person to use the moves if you do them correctly.
You may be right wildpawn. That said, I've been a student of Aikido since the mid eighties and during the last 17 years I've been augmenting my own education with other styles. Particularly, Shaolin Chin na and Ba gua. I have what some consider to be a fair perspective on these styles. Thank you, I've certainly enjoyed your colorful response over my morning coffee.

@threepercenter03 if you use quick atemi (striking) to disorientate or wind the attacker, it is easy to put on a joint-lock. The throws may not always work but it could result in dislocated joints. That said, going up against weapons and against someone bigger and stronger always carries risk, so be cautious at all times

It's good to be in shape in general. There is nothing wrong with exercising. It's true that Aikido is an art that doesn't require a lot of physical fitness, but it doesn't mean being in better shape won't make it more effective. It also doesn't hurt to eat well and stretch daily.
Thanks for you comentary: One of the most eye catching moves are those where the aikido master "disarm" a agressor. In the video it looks so easy, make you think if you practice aikido never gona ve robbed again, is one of the most dangerous odds you can take in your life.
many steps can get you in trouble by the enemy especially when the enemy is able to struggle with you. the shortest distance between two points is a straight line and simplicity in striking is able to do that which is easier then struggling with the enemy who can determine to hold on to pain and continue to move until he releases himself from the grip.
Nice to see how Aikido movements are used at the situations, just than if some one is going to point with weapon and you do such defense fast as there is no time to think anything, there will be broken arm, shoulder or anything else as that time it does not matter, action happens so fast than you just dont care opponents situation, doing an throw to an opponent who cant do ukemi or understand how to soft the landing will cause huge amount of damage, nice to see techniques to be used that way.

Absolutely spot on there my friend!! Any 'contact' fighting sport (no matter how good or bad) is governed by rules and guidelines, including as you rightly say many martial arts. However, some styles such as Krav Maga are NOT governed by rules or regulations and the principles taught include techniques that aim to try and keep you alive in REAL life or death situations and then anything goes.... it then becomes the old 'kill or be killed' mentality!!
Aikido does in fact work for self defense just as any other martial art. I have used it very effectively to defend against multiple attackers and did so quite efficiently. For those who are into MMA, keep in mind that MMA is a sport with rules. That last place I want to be in a fight is on the ground rolling around while my attackers buddies kick my face in! Don't fool yourself...MMA IS A SPORT! Self defense is a mind set!
@BazKami i would agree with what yous say on many points, but i feel that aikido is a good martial arts to start with, because it is so critical in movement and timing. you master those key aspects youll only be that much better in other martial arts where speed and timing are not emphisised so much, idk thats my opinion.
You are correct. Having practiced for about 16 years, and as a teacher of Aikido, if there is anything I have learned or taught about the art, it is that there are indeed two sides to each technique, each of which requires skill if the art is to be beautiful. The uke, or attacker, must know to follow the actions of the nage, or defender, not just for the sake of learning but also to prevent injury. Yes, it results in looking like movie choreography, but the alternative can be gruesome.
@MultiFluffymonkey I've done both Aikido and Tai Chi (Cheng style), and they are very similar in the way you use your body harmoniously and some movement.
Most martial arts teach their student to instinctively evade wrist/forearm grabs via hand movements, and or trapping sweeps, that undo the hold, or brush the hand away within a split second. This is some of the first things most systems teach is how to immediately negate an arm or wrist grab.
Just to mention, all of the MMAs, particulary someone who mentioned Anderson Silva, he was actually taught at some point by Seagal, and he even credited him for the kick that nocked out Vitor Belfort during his fight. Even tho Seagal said that he taught him aikido locks but Silva took the kick as part of his repertory as well as the locks.
@b0ris360 you are not allowed to grab the wrist where half of your palm is over the glove (see MMA unified Rules on grabbing gloves). In Aikido, many techniques come from grabbing the actual hand (which is covered in a glove in an MMA match) and that's illegal
@MartialArts4Ever The concept of redirecting force takes very little strength but good training. Knowing where on a body to press can gain you a whole lot of leverage regardless of the "strength" of your opponent. Having enough mindfulness to understand that the pain you are feeling is not representative of the danger of your opponent is far beyond the training of most criminals.
@Indirectelexify I find it a very well executed application of aikido principles and techniques in a modern day environment. Safeguarding the 'client' and do no additional or extensive harm to the 'opponent'. No one has to get hurt or die to resolve the situation. Isn't that what aikido is about?
Though I agree in part (having a black belt in judo and jiu-jitsu myself) I would suggest you take a look at the yoshinkan style, which is used by the Tokyo Police arrest teams etc. A very hard style of aikido, which is definitely effective in real situations
I'd say Aikido is much better than not knowing any martial arts at all. Remember that it's not just a self defense method, and it was never supposed to just be self defense. It's also a way of getting fit, physically and mentally. It has a stronger spiritual basis than I think most other martial arts. People that just want to learn how to hurt people really well can always learn Muay Thai or something.
i think this guy is very good, his applicative aikido looks very solid and effective. Very different from the make r of 'Aikido Versus' video series who does not even master basic aikido principles
I've never understood why people are so quick in critisizing Aikido just after watching some video clips, Aikido is so much more than you can ever find on youtube!! I have never heard any person that has practice Aikido for some years saying that it was a waste of time! I've heard the same things over and over again "Aikido doesn't work in MMA!" if so, then why is Anderson Silva taking advice from Steven Seagal? And for the question if Aikido works in a real fight, it did for me!! :) Respect!
@sum1otosh1 At the hammer fist of the arm, a wrist flexion and fire can easily hit the torso. At the rise up, a wrist flexion and fire can easily hit the torso or head. At the duck under, a wrist extension and fire can easily hit the head or torso. The move to the ikkyo armbar still has the barrel aiming at the arm, which he can shoot. One can demonstrate this by doing the drill with a paintball handgun. Oh, and how does this technique address random firing at civilians?
I'm actually learning this at the Conde Academy in Boca Raton. Ya it works! Im just a beginner and had a guy tapping out in one of the holds my Sensei taught. fightluv is right slow at first and hen you get better as you go :) .
I first looked at Aikido in my teens, studied it for about a year. I then took karate / kickboxing / various striking arts and have been training for about 25 years+, as well as x-training with friends in judo, jujitsu, wrestling, muay thai, etc. I still train in karate and judo, but have recently started aikido again. What I have found is with other combative experience, and now a better understanding of how and when to apply aikido, it is very, very effective. No offence to pure aikido people,
@aslanthebest I myself also started aikido when I am 18. It is very interesting. I believe that weight is not a problem because most of the techniques is about directing the opponent's energy and break the opponent's balance and Aikido training does not focus on strength.. For your information, bowing in aikido is a form of respect to sensei(Teacher) and not about religion. Therefore you do not have to worry at all. :D
Heeeelp needed I go gym as well.. will picking up Akkido damage my wrists? i lift heavy weights and it might put extra pressure on my shoulders, elbows and wrists. Can someone with experince replie please?
Aikido martial art of beauty I want to learn it but unfortunately can not but health aikido looks most beautiful when it shows someone who really knows and shows it with my heart still wanted to ask where can I find the melodies travel'a joneson'a?
Yes and no. It depends what your teacher was like, and what style of Aikido you learn, some styles are more applied than others. To be applied effectively I personally believe its best to combine Aikido with other styles, such as Judo and to train against different styles, not just sparring against a willing partner.
@0Mikichan Yes, I bet these silly drills have a reason to be in the curriculum. I very much like Aikido, but when it comes to these weird/abstract drills I feel frustrated and I feel I don't really want to do them. I know i won't change the curriculum of a martial art but I just wanted to know if there are other aikido schools that are more down to earth oriented, that's all. Thanks for the reply.
Unlike other martial arts like karate and judo e.t.c (the other martial arts r still great btw) aikido can be done at any age, height and weight as it does not require physical strength and does not use any techniques (like round-house kicks) where u need to have flexibility.
I am no expert on Aikido... but some moves I see (especially the handgun ones) are related to yu kwon sul hapkido (if not imported from it directly).. Can it be that this videoo contains a (fine) mix between both?
@Chad01234 Actually there is someone in MMA using Aikido. You don't see a lot of things in the Octagon, but that doesn't mean it is useless and it doesn't mean it cannot be adapted to the octagon. Aikido is still a budo first and foremost and that's why it's not meant for the Octagon. Stripped down it is Aikijujutsu as such it shares a multitude of techniques with jujutsu, because it IS jujutsu. The art is derived from sword techniques so its no stranger to weapons retention
@TheGunKnut YES, I've been in a similiar trainning, with the same master several years ago (Sensei Rojo, the one with the red shirt), and I can tell you YES, he uses the real guns form the students (Goverment security staff and bodyguards). He requested at the beggining of the excersise, handled it properly to verify no ammo was loaded and safety.
I praise myself lucky I am alive this day because I had trained in aikido. I had up until that point practiced it for 7 years, also have 1st dan now. But I consider myself a calm type that just wants to know how to defend myself. And while on vacation on Majorca some psycho pulled a knife to my face and tried to rob me. at first I was stunned with fear, but focused on my training. And the crazy dude ended with a broken arm and a mild concussion. No doubt in my heart that aikido saved my life.
@BrenLW aikido comes in a few flavors, ranging from the intensely physical to the intensely flaky. traditional aikido (a la ASU or USAF style) is really good for what you are asking. learning how to relax as a strike is coming at you is the physical equivalent (IMHO) of meditation. it's like yoga but martial. and there's a lot more to it than that. watch videos of some the Founder and you will notice the mental (some say spiritual) side of it. it's amazing and i highly recommend it.
@BOWENSblog Yes, you are, I didn't say these techniques wouldn't work. What I am saying is that in a fight, Mixed Martial Artists are TRAINED to fight, Aikido focuses on techniques against people who cannot fight very well. I am 20 years old, when I was 16, I studied Ninjutsu, very simliar techniques to Aikido, but when I got into a fight at the age of 17, I found I was not able to simply grab someones wrist and twist/manipulate it. I have studied MMA ever since.
Actually, that's one of the main things that aikido tries to teach you: staying calm and being able to manage stress situations. Aikido is very much about the right state of mind, not only "fancy" techniques. And by the way, if someone runs at you screaming and shooting, no martial art in the world can help you....
Actually Aikido's "rules" (what the uninitiated might call it perhaps) are based upon fluidity of motion, timing and awareness of one's environment. Like any martial discipline, one's effectiveness is based upon an individual's skill level and philosophy. Not who's style is "better". In my experience, those who've discounted this particular art form, has simply never faced practitioner.
People think aikido is not effective to use in streetfight
Actually its very effective in many cases because you can mix the tecniques

This is the best Aikido video in the site.
Why would you grab someone if you have a gun? A gun is a ranged weapon.
My point being its stupid to get within hand or knife rage when using a gun.
Stangil1 their target is not the aikidoka. He's a hostage. While the guy is against others with firearms.
Makes sense.

Aikido is an art that was built around weapons so it's no big surprise they would train it for weapon retention purposes.
Thank you wildpawn, I would enjoy learning from your skills in Judo.
Very nice demonstration of practical application.
Martial arts are for protection of yourself & protect other people , protect yourself is the first step
MUY MUY BIEN HECHO! EXCEPCIONAL, TREMENDO Y EXCELENTE!
Respect!
@sum1otosh1
At the hammer fist of the arm, a wrist flexion and fire can easily hit the torso.
Im just a beginner and had a guy tapping out in one of the holds my Sensei taught. fightluv is right slow at first and hen you get better as you go :)
.
No offence to pure aikido people,
abs
Arte maravilhosa e fantástica!
Well done aikido looks so calm and peaceful but is like 10 times more dangerous then the attackers force. I just love to watch how beautiful it is.
Heeeelp needed
I go gym as well.. will picking up Akkido damage my wrists? i lift heavy weights and it might put extra pressure on my shoulders, elbows and wrists. Can someone with experince replie please?
great martial art discipline , and what`s name of music in this video?
Aikido martial art of beauty I want to learn it but unfortunately can not but health aikido looks most beautiful when it shows someone who really knows and shows it with my heart still wanted to ask where can I find the melodies travel'a joneson'a?
excelente demostración muy buenos.
Unlike other martial arts like karate and judo e.t.c (the other martial arts r still great btw) aikido can be done at any age, height and weight as it does not require physical strength and does not use any techniques (like round-house kicks) where u need to have flexibility.
we train slow in the dojo at first, but when you get to a higher level, you start to the techniques faster.
I am no expert on Aikido... but some moves I see (especially the handgun ones) are related to yu kwon sul hapkido (if not imported from it directly).. Can it be that this videoo contains a (fine) mix between both?
both Aikido and Hapkido share a common ancestry. The founders of both of these arts had trained under the tutelage of the same aiki-jujutsu master.
Nicely done! Bravo! Thank you, very much!
@CAPcadetsouthworth
Where the hell did you get that definition?
Any links to videos where you really see this in action?
what music is it?
the song is: trevor jones-endurance
