My son has been taking private goalkeeper lessons. Today was his first game in club (2011) on a team with an established goalkeeper. The goalkeeper had two shots made on him on a 1 v 1 in the first half. I asked my son what his approach would have been and he said that the goalkeeper didn’t set. I asked him what he meant and he said he wasn’t criticizing his choice to move forward and close the gap but he never set so he was unable to move laterally or jump up. Then my son got a chance to sub in the second half. The same striker from the other team had a 1 v 1 on my son and I watched my son push up and set just outside the goal box. Then my son dove on the ball. I asked him what had happened because it was hard to see from my angle but he said he thought the striker was going to take a shot so he set and then the striker touched the ball one more time and my son was able to dove on the ball. When I told his private keeper coach about the difference of setting between my son and the other keeper, he said that when you set it can put a demand on the striker to make a decision right away, either shoot or try to get around. I asked his club coach what he thought of my sons play and he made it seem like a standard stop. I’m not sure he saw the difference in my sons decision to set vs the teams other keeper who was closing the gap but never setting. And the final thought was that his private goalkeeper coach said the better you get at making decisions, the less impressive it looks to those watching because it looks easy but that you know it wasn’t. I’ve heard the coach on his AYSO all star tournament team comment some games how the other team kept kicking it to my son as goalkeeper. And I’m watching my son choosing when and where to set.
