My private 24x7 cable channel (Raspberry pi + RF modulator)

  • Here's my take on a raspberry pi episode player. I used an RF modulator I picked up at a thrift store, to hook it up through the house antenna wiring.
    I used libreELEC as the OS / media player:
    libreelec.tv/downloads_new/
    and here's the autoexec.py code that I used (filepath=the location where the video files are stored):
    import xbmc
    xbmc.executebuiltin("PlayerControl(Random)")
    xbmc.executebuiltin("PlayMedia(filepath,isdir)")
    xbmc.executebuiltin("PlayerControl(RepeatAll)")
    **** Update note ****
    If the video files play in order and not shuffled, try moving the Random command to after PlayMedia, and/or try changing it to RandomOn

    This is great, I have been thinking of doing this with all the 4x3 content I have. It would be nice to have something random to watch on my crt tvs. I was thinking it would be cool if there was a way between videos for an auto generated “up next” & “followed by” card to be shown for a few seconds. Do you know any way of doing this?

    Did you use an SD card or a USB stick and what capacity to fit all 10 seasons? Another question, do you just plug the modulator into a socket that has a coax cable and it becomes available throughout the house?

    • @probnotstech
      @probnotstech  4 роки тому +2

      I used a USB stick, separate from the OS on SD Card. This way, I can easily remove the USB and change/refresh the video files later on. I used a 64gb, but depending on the compression you could get away with a 32gb.
      For the coax, I plugged the modulator between the antenna coming into the house, and the splitter that distributes to the TVs in the house. This modulator is designed to be hooked up that way. It inserts 2 channels, and passes through the rest of them.

    What about closed captions? I'm guessing most of your video files don't have 'em?

    • @probnotstech
      @probnotstech  3 роки тому +1

      Hmm didn't think about that one. No closed captions, since those are stored in the vertical blanking interval of the video signal, and the video files would have all of that information stripped out.

    • @probnotstech
      @probnotstech  4 роки тому +3

      I'm actually using a pi 3 for another channel (future video). The headphone jack (3.5mm) is a 4 pin, so the 4th pin is video. I'm sure the pi 2 is similar. You can use a cable like this to get the composite video out, without needing a converter:

    when you put to many usb device in to the raspberry pi then i it will reboot over and over again because of low power same will happen sometimes if you use a power supply with 5 volt and 1A or less. so atleast use a 5 volt and 2A one.(unless you are using pi 4.) this might have been your problem. 1A or less works great until you turn it in to a something more demanding lik a media player and connect a usb wifi to it.

    • @probnotstech
      @probnotstech  2 роки тому

      The problems with the Pi3 I mentioned were while using the 5V/2A supply that comes with the Pi, and no extra USB devices - this was years ago. It would flash the little lightning bolt in the corner, indicate power issues. I just stopped using the built-in Wi-Fi and the problem went away.
      I've been able to get away with 1A and even 500mA on the original Pi models in this use case with zero stability issues. Some of mine have nearly a year uptime. But the newer Pi models, you are definitely right. They are very power hungry.
