I've never been able to sweep pick, bar the odd three string arpeggio all in the same direction in a swift rake motion, but Rick highlighting how you pick then rest on the next target string has blown my mind. Never thought of it, never tried it, but can't wait to try it out!! 20+ years of playing and only now I discover the secret. Thanks Rick, keep up the quality content 👌
Another fantastic lesson Rick, removing the pinky on the low E smooth-ens the sweeping motion. You mentioned Jason Richardson, you and JR are the absolute top technical Guitar monsters at the moment. Cheers!
Thanks so much, half way thru the video I learned an important thing. The pick rest strokes. Never realised that. That makes it way easier to time the notes instead of floating your pick over the strings. Rick, you legend.
The start of this "video" was bloody fantastic. In that he said video 3 times and then apologised for it and immediately used the word "video" about 4 more times haha. Legend.
I do it with a C°7 in place of the 3rd and 4th rep of the A-... so it's... C on E string... A on A string... C on D string... Gb on G string... A on B string... and C and Eb on the e string... Just another shape to try, and great sound addition to an already awesome harmony... thanks Rick 🤘
That's amazing. Thank you Rick, I always feel better informed after watching your vids, I always take something away from it. My sweeps are far from perfect but they'll get there with a little help and practise.
Don't stop trying. Took me over ten years. And I'm no where near the finished article. Check Frank gambale as an example of where you can take sweep picking.
Sweep picking exercise suggestion: start with the CAGED system, and learn to shred every scale included in the CAGED system by increasing the BPM from low to high. I think Petrucci once suggesting this as a form of warmup technique, but I find it to be very useful for practicing the technique also.
Awesome Rick🤘 would you mind uploading some beginner stuff or on how to plan a schedule on training to succeed? I live in a place which I'm not able to access any online teacher and I'm wandering around with little improvements. After almost 2 years I'm still like a beginner 🙁 please make a guide
The hardest part for me is “ the pick should be falling” part . Anytime I apply tension then relax my brain wants to alternate pick 😣 so I end up getting good clarity for the first 2 strings and way to soft on the rest .
Its the decemding i have to work.on. i find acemdimg sweep and economy easy but when i started learning i wasnt aware of what eco or alternate was and found later on i alwsys seem to decend alternate andvacend ecomomy
WTF. I just got a Charvel ProMod DK24 (Red Ash) after 2 years playing acoustic, and started practicing sweeps. So this video feels extreeemly well to me now 🤘🎸 Thanks master!!
Thanks for the video Rick, just a question for all out there, when going back to the low E, and keeping in mind you want to continue the sweep down, how do you find is more fluid, downstroke or upstroke pick? I find sometimes that if I finish the move with an upstroke, I repeat the same string again, most of the time, so low E twice. Most of the time unintended. Any suggestion?
My pinky cannot stay in the same position you have yours in when sweeping down. Somehow your pinky stays relatively close to the other fingers while mine falls way back by the first string.
I hate how easy this looks, I’ve been trying to sweep pick for years and years and have basically made zero progress. Sounds good when I play it slowly but as soon as the tempo increases even a little bit it all falls apart 😒
This is great! The sweeping shape I've always struggled with the most is the major shape with the root on the 5th string (i.e. the A major "CAGED" shape) because of the 3-string bar. Curious as to how you (or anyone else reading this) approach that one... with the 3-string bar or maybe fretting the strings with a few different fingers?
A is actually my easiest shape because it requires the least finger movement lol. I use my second finger across all 3 but sort of bent backwards at the outermost knuckle and roll it across the strings; this rolling coupled with right hand muting sounds totally clean, no ringing strings or anything. I do the same rolling motion with the 3rd finger for an A minor shape and with the first and 3rd for E major and minor shapes, imo rolling the first finger makes these shapes harder.
@elchema Which fingers do you use for the notes on strings 2, 3, and 4? I've thought about doing something like that but I find that the spacing can get pretty cramped higher up on the neck
@@lollipophugo For me the toughest part is descending with the 3-string bar. I don't mind the 2-string bars in other shapes, and even the 3-string bar in the E minor shape isn't too bad, but it's just this 3-string one in particular that's tough for me to get to sound clean. Might spend some time practicing the bar with my middle finger instead. Thanks for the reply!
@@TrevorTowstego man I find that first finger roll on E minor so messy that I almost never use that shape. Tbh I don't do use many 5 string shapes and if I'm doing any sweep picking it's usually 5 note 7th patterns over 3 strings a la rusty cooley; with those I'm only ever rolling between 2 strings which is much more manageable regarding muting.
If it's bedtime for you right now, sweep well.
Goodnight and thanks for the lessons Sir. 🤘
Yes my teacher
Aw thanks Rick
Thanks man
4:40 in Houston Tx , great playing
He brought the fist back! 0:25 YES!!!
This guy is not only an incredible guitarist he’s got the nicest, most natural personality-just comes across so grounded and human-like…
He talks like a gentleman and plays like a monster. The juxtaposition is not lost on me.
Thanks Rick for improving our playing.

I bought this same guitar mainly so that when Rick’s videos come up I have no excuse for why I suck.

Riiiick! Your sweeps are doing extreemely well, mate!!

Beautiful Charvel, phenomenal lesson.
Rick I've been doing my own crappy version of this shape for years!!! I'm glad to see a master say it's ok!!
The disliking ppl ate stuck playing the A minor pentatonic position #1 for 12 years
12 likes on this comment looks satisfying
This is beautiful! Hooked to the first three arpegios, the chromatic "upstair" so beautiful!
🎶Sweep dreams are made of these..🎶
I love this lesson
Rick digresses all the time but then sweeps back in style 😎
Love your technical lessons..very inspiring..keeps me motivated

Thanks man, that's a lovely routine, classic descent.
Thanks for all the detailed explanations you give us Rick.
damn...you are right about the middle strings....NOTED!
Man I play your lessons every day to keep my chops up .
Nicely done, nice guitar too. I'm thinking of getting a Charvel too. They're more expensive then I first thought they'd be
20 years of playing, I still never got around to learning how to do this properly.
Same . I've tried slow and fast and my picking hand always wants to go faster than my feet hand and I'm officially insane because of it 😳
Cant wait to practice this over the weekend
The janitor, cleanest sweeps in town
Hiya RG thanks for the upload, that camera is super clear thanks for that also !!
Thanks for sharing this Rick \m/ ! Very helpful.
You need to do a rig run down and your guitar collection!! 🙏 I'll be getting this one down 🤘 keep um coming!!
Great lesson learned thank you 😊
Thank you for this amazing lesson
Great. Reminds me of Nuno
Hi Rick! Thank you, very beautiful arpeggios progression!!
That's amazing. Thank you Rick, I always feel better informed after watching your vids, I always take something away from it. My sweeps are far from perfect but they'll get there with a little help and practise.
That was some sweet picking.
Thanks , I improve my sleep picking a lot by watching this video !
What a beautiful guitar.
I still can't sweep after 13 years of playing, yet 5 year olds sweep and shred here on youtube XD
You’re not alone.

I feel your pain.
I can do mini sweeps on 3 strings but even that sounds shite.
Been playing for 10 and I can’t sweep for shit. I can sweep my house better than I can on guitar lol
great lesson Maestro Graham!
Great technique Rick!
With the new lens, you can see the pick gunk near the bridge pickup. get a soft paintbrush! =P. Love the Charvel!
Dude, I spent today working on this. Such a great approach. So musical too! thanks a lot Rick.
beautiful

Hi can we have some clarity on amp setting and if you are going through and pedals. Many thanks
Extremely well!
Thanks Rick 🤘🤘🤘
What guitar is that? I like the color.
Can you play Gambale-like repeated descending arpeggio sweeps?
What distortion are you using? Also are you using compression or an ep booster?
Thanks you share
Kickass
Dear Rick, did you change all your Ibani for Charvels??
I've been playing for years but am having a very hard time learning to sweep pick. Idk what I'm doing wrong, but I just can't get it.
Holy shit ...a Rick video i can actually practice
thank you, great work
Just out of curiosity, what string gauge do you use? They look really light
By the looks of it im gonna take a guess and say its a 9
9’s
What do you know, I have been picking up sweep picking for awhile, I’ve been looking for the right scales
His tone only gets better
George Harrison said it as well.. “While my guitar gently sweeps...”
Charvel Matte Blue Frost OMG
I'm extremely well after this 😍
Sweep madame blue !!!
sweet new charvel!
Very cool!
Masters to the left of me masters to the right

Rick you play any games?
not related to your awesome lesson at all Rick, but please tell me what camera are you using!
Canon M50
Having a hard time focusing on technique....LOOK AT THAT BEAUTIFUL ROASTED MAPLE FRETBOARD!!
Rick, you got a Charvel awesome \m/
The intro video totally sounds like part of a Jason Becker song!

Hey Rick! What camera are you using in this video ?
Canon M50 with a Sigma 16mm 1.4 lens
Dear Rick, is your guitar Japan made or USA ?
Charvel is from USA
6:15 to get through the first sequence. Lol!!! But I'll give you a pass since I'll never be as good as you!!!
You have to do the fist when you complete the exercise.
