That is exactly what it was. I unscrewed the pump valve at the bottom of the tube & then opened it up. I found the rubber was stuck to where it is supposed to seal & let air pressure through. I replaced the rubber seal, spring & of course the lead washer & now it pumps freely & I'm building pressure. Thanks for the comment.

Hi there, I know this is a while ago but I have the same problem...how easy was it to change the NRV? Did you find a video?

Dont know if you found the problem but your Non-Return Valve (NRV) is stuck, if you look through the pump tube there is a nut or slot where you can unscrew the NRV and service it by replacing the stuck rubber pip. You can also find some parts of Ebay.DE for used NRV's.

I do not know much about the Anchor lantern, but if you are on the States my recomendation would be the MR3 - Military All Weather/Terrain Heating/Cooking/Lighting Package from BriteLyt. Todays price $450. It's a great kit & you get a lot of spare parts.

Call Petromax. What are you waiting for? They are very helpful and from what I experienced, want people to learn to maintain their lanterns.

Or you can post your inquiry at Classic Pressure Lamps (CPL) and you will get the same answer and perhaps a tutorial on how to service your nice lanterns

My problem too. Do an update to let us know what you found out and if you solved the problem.

I can only sugest that you go for the gold standard in the Petromax style of lanterns and go for the Britelyt brand of lantern. I have never had a problem with mine and it is SUPER bright and can burn just about anything! colema fuel, kerosene/paraffin disel petrol/gasoline ect.... I have the stove attachment for the top, it is a FINE lantern

If I understand you correctly the dish is what you place fuel in to preheat before you turn on the lantern. When heated it helps vaporize the fuel. All of these lanterns are basicly the Petromax with almost all the parts being interchangable. All of then recomend paraffin (kerosene in the US) as the fuel of choice but other fuels can work. A great source of information is to search britelyt. He has come good U-Tube videos & I buy my parts from him. Good luck mate.

It appears that the problem is caused by blockage in the "artery system". The pipe connecting the fuel supply and mantle holder. I would suggest that you use a thick iron wire, insert it into the pipe and clean off the rust/dirt.

Did u turn the pump valve so the check valve is open while pumping ?

I just got off their web site and you can pick one up for as little as $199.00 U.S. and that is for the lantern, reflector and case. (S&H not inc.)

I had the same problem. The one-way valve in the pressure cylinder is stuck. Try replacing it or put some WD40 on it for a few days.

five short sharp strokes- your not building pressure as the air is bypassing seal, failing that you have leak which you can find by putting in a bath sideways

The pressure gauge came to life

Had the same problem the way I solved it was to go back to using coleman lanterns. Can't beat them.

I had two Coleman lanterns and they both ended up leaking and having problems. Bought a Petromax and started to have what I thought was pressure problems. Through a process of elimination with Petromax phone help, I was able to isolate the issue to a sticky pressure gauge.
My lantern is a stove and a heater(with or without a mantel) as well. I also have a top and side reflector and it puts out twice the amount of light if needed. I can still use Coleman mantels in a pinch but have to stay below the red line on the pressure gauge or the smaller mantel will disintegrate from the Petromax pressure.
A Coleman lantern is designed to only burn Coleman fuel although you might get away with white gas. My Petromax will burn ANYTHING. In a desperate pinch, you can even mix a thinner fuel(anything) with thicker(anything), although I certainly would stand upwind. Any thicker fuels are primed with the pre-heater which is a pressurized primer or you can prime first with alcohol flame in a cup then heat the rest of the way with the pre-heater so thicker fuels will start in very cold conditions. There's even a lantern adapter for burning just rubbing alcohol. Coleman lanterns cannot do any of this and unless you have Coleman fuel or white gas, you are stuck.
The glass of my Petromax is tempered glass so if I take it outside in freezing temperatures, it won't shatter. Something to consider for anyone considering the kerosene wick lamps as well. I don't know if the Coleman glass will shatter or not. The old true railroad kerosene lamps had tempered glass for that very reason.
And now my darn Coleman STOVE is once again leaking after certified maintenance, one use, and storing it for a year. Arrrgh!! I'm going to fix it myself this time around. At least I can cook on my Petromax until then if necessary. LOL!

I’ve had good luck with all these type of lanterns, I’ve converted several of my Coleman’s to run on kerosene with great results, you just have to be able to diagnose and fix little problems yourself. I would never even consider sending one in for service, they are all designed to be repaired and maintained by the end user.

Nests foot oil, soak the leather in it for a few hours and it will stay pliable for months

Despite Britelyt's claims NEVER run naptha based fuels (i.e. Coleman fuel) in a Petromax style lantern as they do not have a positive off valve and do not have a locking NRV. Should the NRV fail while running a naptha based fuel a giant fireball can result....

No, actually he is right. You can do it, just make sure it’s outside only.

Hiya, I have what you refer to as a butterfly, never been lit, as new, but no info on it, & am wondering what the small dish is for with tube in it at base of vaporizer, is this another way of shaping the mantel? also can another fuel be used ie Paraffin instead of petrol? any chance of getting a copy of info please? Brian UK. please to reply.

The tray is for alcohol 91% or more to preheat the generator, best to stick with kerosene or paraffin in your neck of the woods

    • @stpaulmercantile
      @stpaulmercantile 5 років тому

That piece is called a spirit cup. You fill it with methylated spirits (denatured alcohol in the US) and light with a match to preheat the vaporizer before letting the kerosene flow. Butterfly lanterns sell for $99 at stpaulmercantile.com.
