I saw it four times in theatres and it slapped every time. That scene of Miles changing costumes in the stairwell is the greatest Spider-Man scene ever put to film.
It is mid. WHO did it is why it's valuable, not the quality of it. He could wipe his butt and command those prices. It has nothing to do with the quality of the art. It's like the people oohing and aahing over the completely over-rated Mark Rothko money-laundry pieces.
It's hurts me that an artist, who was genuinely happy to share their art, gets their art shamed by other artists. As you said, every artist has a different perception of beauty and some may like your art and some may don't. It's not an excuse to art shame people's artstyles which they have worked on.
Yet the reverse can also be true can't it? Some people will also take a female character that is slim and not super muscular and make them male and suddenly they're beefed out. Overall, gender-bending is always weird to me, but to each their own.
i'm sorry you've been hurt in that regard. don't ever stop drawing or loving your art, ever. because i know so many others do as well, and always will :)
For art to be better people need to be a little harsh or at least stop seeing every little criticism as the end of the world. Otherwise we’ll be stuck in an echo chamber
Yeah if you wanna shame someones art shame mine, even I know its bad and commenting boosts my channel in the algorithm, it also might give me motivation to actually try. Don’t bully people who actually just want to share the art they worked hard on, and weren’t looking for constructive criticism.
The fan-art itself was good, the lighting, colors, etc. It’s ridiculous to literally send threats and unnecessary hate to this artist. Obviously everyone has a different perspective of what they would draw Miguel as if he was a woman. It does kinda throw me off when it comes to male characters and drawing them as women just for the whole “gender-bender” thing but if they were muscular as a man, why not keep the muscles when you draw them as a woman?
Absolutely agree with this take. Feminity and masculinity should never align with gender; as in, masculine men should become masculine women, and feminine women made into feminine men. Hair and clothing will depend entirely on the social norms of the fictional universe and the character's personality, like, a man who's always to-the-point and blunt and wears clothes that don't get in the way in a combat setting will become a woman with a very short haircut with clothing that doesn't objectify and sexualise her. Why? Because it's fiction, and gender expression should not be tied to gender identity in the first place. Of course, that being said, nothing, and I repeat. NOTHING justifies sending mass hate and threats to other artists for their interpretation. If you don't like something, just keep scrolling. Block the artist or tag if you want to. At most, politely disagree and agree to disagree. Nothing warrants extreme reactions.
Superheroes aren't made to be realistic, they are made to look good. Male superheroes have incredibly well-sculpted and dry bodies that, believe it or not, are not suited for fighting, they are bodybuilder shapes, they are for show. So are female superheroes: if you look at any comic featuring a female superhero, she is not a strongwoman, she is just beautiful. Superheroes are meant to embody conventional ideas of beauty to embody the abstract idea/archetype of what a perfect person is. Obviously that doesn't mean that you can't draw strongwomen superheroes, but there is nothing "unrealistic" about a superhero woman being just a normal toned woman because superheroes were never meant to be realistically strong.
@@astrobookwormsinger I 100% agree with this, when it comes to gender-bending, sometimes you would see a drastic change within a character. Keeping that personality, the ideal concept of that character is basically what makes that character. As you said before, if they were a masculine man, they can also be masculine as a woman and so on with that. Threats, harassment, and anything within those categories are just not justified because of those simple things. We can all have agreements and disagreements on a lot of different topics but threats, etc are just not called for in a situation like this.
@@wvwnt I agree with your statement on some women having just a simple toned body but I don’t see it as being typically unrealistic from the body types you may see in comics. If we go through the different body types also shown in real life, bodybuilders, plus-size, skinny, etc, we got them all. As from what I’ve seen, they can have broad shoulders, thin waist and defined muscles overall. My statement does still stand on keeping muscles regardless of the whole gender-bender concept. Even if in some comics some women are just simply shown to be on the spotlight and be “beautiful” they can be beautiful with defined, big muscles as well. As just for Miguel himself, if he is being drawn as a woman just to show what he would look like as a woman, why not keep his broad shoulders, small waist and small changes be inputted? Nothing wrong with that because the character itself is still there and beautiful.
@@amour9086 I never said that a muscular woman can't be beautiful, of course she can. But the concept of genderbending a character completely depends on the archetype they are trying to embody. Because, as a I said, male superheroes aren't realistically strong at all, because they are not supposed to be. If they were, they would all look like Hulk. You can take this exercise with any other archetype: speaking of Hulk, for example, I would prefer for She-Hulk to keep the extremely muscular boxy shape, because Hulk is strongman. And so She-Hulk should be just like that, because that's the archetype. That same goes for, for example, a punk archetype or a biker - these have no difference depending on gender. However, let's say we take a character like femme fatale. A femme fatale, just like a superhero, is supposed to embody the beauty standard, so she is conventionally beautiful for a woman and typically wears revealing clothing. But if you make a male version of that, do you put him in stockings and shorts? Of course not, you make him a dapper gentleman and express his elegance in a different way. I am not trying to say that diversity is not welcomed or that I think that people of all types can't be beautiful, but I'm just saying that archetypes play a big role in how a character would look like.
This entire situation was cringe when i witnessed it on twitter. Someone called it a "Porn body" so you already know where's these people's heads are at.
@@itsj0k3r a lot of times when people are accused of that, the person saying it refuses to actually,, help criticize the artist helpfully? Like I’ve never seen someone go “oh hey! This characters features are ethic, here’s a tip on making sure you include those features in your style” because it is easy to accidentally mess up on ethnic features if you’ve never drawn them b4 ,,, they’re typically super rude about it which makes artists not want to listen 😭
@@Mealwormeater45 agreed. As an artist myself this is a big fear for me. But in all fairness I tend to draw in a more anime style so of course I'm not gonna get it right, I have to be out of my comfort zone to pull it off. Not saying I won't add those details, it more so requires me to practice more, study people and overtime incorporate it into my style as I evolve
@@Mealwormeater45right! Sometimes failing a little to portray an ethnicity you are not familiar with is just an honest mistake and not a malicious attack. They should be treated like a human being, point it out respectfully in a helpful way
@@aiiiia9971 yeah! A gentle reminder. One time I drew a plus sized character and drew collar bones unknowingly. Someone kindly pointed it out nicely and I genuinely learned something. if it was rude, I wouldn’t want to draw the character as much considering if I do mess up and draw collar bones and go to fix it I have to be reminded of someone being a dick Everytime
let's remember how a similar community almost drove a teenage girl to suicide because she drew Rose Quartz “too thin”. Some people should keep their opinions to themselves and leave other people alone.
I heard they even leaked the location of the hospital where she is treated at. Like…what are they trying to do?? It’s not like bullying a teenage girl would solve anything…
I'm picky with genderbends -- especially male to female because sometimes they really do just take away all the muscle and make the lady a pin-up version. And it almost feels like women who are muscular/toned cannot be seen as beautiful (although im sure that's not really true). But just because I don't like something means I'm allowed to harass people for it. That's so bizarre to me. I just lift an eyebrow and then continue scrolling. If I really don't like certain content (basically nudity, extreme sexualization of characters -- male or female) then I simply block the artist so I don't see them again. Easy peasy. There are more important things in the world to worry about
yeah i agree, i wouldn't harass an artist over it but it's true that most of the time people just take away everything deemed 'masculine' for genderbent characters and make them look like they walked straight out a hentai LMAO it does make me pretty angry too sometimes because it seems that they can't distinguish between 'female' and 'sexual', they think that having a poonani means they need to be 10x more attractive
i’m picky with genderbends as a trans person because a lot of the time the art just feels transphobic for the way they make it look. every girl looks like a bodybuilder and every boy looks like a twink. it’s just upsetting to me.

I think people often forget how everyone's artstyle is different depending on what they like, and it doens't appeal to everyone. It's ALRIGHT If an artstyle is not your thing, but that gives you no right to shit on neither the artist, nor the art piece.
asides from people hating a drawing because of how it looks or how certain features are drawn and how the artist used color and manipulated light, sometimes they take it further with internalized hate and judgement till it's not even about the art anymore. i've seen so many people hating on the "instagram art style" and it honestly has nothing to do with how the art looks most of the time but with the reception and engagement it receives.
@@MohammedAgbadi YES! I've seen so many people hating on artstyles and calling them many differemt stereotypes, such as "proshipper style", or even, as you also mentioned, the "instagram style".
@@astrobookwormsingerno idea about the IG one but all I know is "proshipper art style" is when you draw a character in a certain cute way(??) it's actually associated with those artists who drew children in an inappropriate way with those "cutesy art style." I know art shaming is bad but the last time I tried to have a decent conversation with a younger artist he started mocking my ugliest drawings if you tell a kid they draw beautifully just because they are kids they will eventually believe it
I dont get your point. Hes not saying go out of your way to tell a kid their art is perfect when it's clearly not, hes saying dont engage in a shameful and rude way and simply move on. You dont need to combat a problem by enacting the opposite behavior, sometimes doing nothing is the best approach.
@@ConfuzzledOwO the thing is I wasn't being rude at first I just wanted to give the kid some advise I guess you're right sometimes you just have to let them hit as many walls as they need to realize they own artistic level I mean im not a picazo or a Leonardo da Vinci im still pretty bad at art lol but I know one thing or two about art
@@ivancabrera3289It's best to Never give criticism if it isn't asked for, posted somewhere where that's the point, or you ask first if they want crits. People are super sensitive about their art and it's best to be careful when you genuinely want to help. Also compliment sammich! Compliment > crit > one more compliment. It will help you come off more positive and helpful 💜
As a young artist I really value when people reach out to me and tell me how my anatomy and coloring could be better, but the difference is when it’s said in a very hurtful way that could damage the artists self image. Criticism is great for learning, but there is a fine line between criticism and just straight up roasting
Usually the problem is unsolicited advice/critiques. I love criticism and I love to criticize, but unless someone asks for it, I keep it to myself. People usually only want criticism or advice when they ask for it. And if they didn't ask, you ask them first (ex: "Hey, would you be alright with some advice?"). The only time unsolicited criticism is acceptable is when it involves something that isn't super personal, like a movie or a popular book series. Art pieces are often made by one person, so criticism can feel personal. Criticisms against most books and movies/tv shows are totally fine because books are often rewritten several times anyways, and are edited/read constantly for quality-assurance before release; while tv shows and movies are written and made by other people. Books might seem a bit more personal than larger projects for television, which I'd normally agree with, but books also have a chance of being MADE into something else as well, unlike a simple painting. ...Maybe another exception to criticism would be a comic series. Sometimes a manga or comic has ass art, and that's totally fine to comment on. But it's never okay to go straight to the creator and offer them advice that they never asked for. Anyway, good luck to you on your art journey. Being a young artist is a good time for learning. You'll be surprised at how fast you've grown, just a few years from now. Even I look back at the art I made when I was 13, and I ask myself "how on earth did I do that with the skillset I had?!?!" lol. Always make the art you want to make!
I miss how the internet was pre-cancel culture. Back when artists could make bad art and genuinely learn at their own pace. Back when people weren't trying to see which bully would get the most likes and retweets. Back when people weren't misogynistic against pretty women for the sake of "feminism" (ironic, isn't it). I've dealt with some toxic internet people back in the day, but now it seems like you can't even make a mistake without getting harassed over it. Nobody is allowed to learn anymore. It's awful. The art community didn't used to be AMAZING or anything, but it's definitely way worse now.
@@nomoretwitterhandlesyeah Twitter and Tiktok are awful for artists unless you are addicted to drama and harassing people. Instagram is starting to turn into those two but it’s slightly better lmao
Yeah, I hardly care when any of my pieces "flops" on the internet (for me personally it's bc I'm only posting my art for archival purposes, if other ppl notices it then good, if not then shrug) but if people just started sending hate over my art? I'd be in shambles, at least on the inside :'D
I don’t like art trends like this one and I’m always annoyed by them so I just mute/hide them not go around insulting and being mean to people with 1 hour long paragraphs that completely discourage them from making art. I believe If you have nothing nice to say or genuine good criticisms that can help the grow than don’t say anything.
this is why I get scared to post my art, i was doing good until someone saw my art in a discord server and said it looked terrible and that I wasted for 4hrs on it 😭
That’s awful 😭 Don’t let them police where and when you post your art, they’re just ppl who have nothing to do. Honestly the best way to stop caring about it is to just treat it like you’re uploading to a portfolio. But don’t dwell on what chronically online ppl think, bc they are so deeply absorbed in their own circles that anything that doesn’t appeal to them is enough for them to bully others
Even if it was the world's crappiest drawing (highly unlikely) is it so hard to just be nice? You didn't waste four hours on the art, you wasted the time it took to read that that filth. That was two seconds you could have been breathing in peace, but nooooooooo.
Twitter is hella crazy like ya'll could've just said "Tbh considering that Miguel is a buff guy I think a more design-accurate genderbend of Miguel would be a muscular woman" It gets across the same point without being rude
Though I feel like you wouldn’t even need to say that considering it’s unofficial art the artist made for fun, unless the artist said they wanted constructive criticism of course
I wish if people want to criticize someone's art the reason must be reasonable or technical(?) & worded respectfully, like "you draw the hand wrong, yours were flipped", "the hand has 6 fingers", etc. Because sometimes artists are too tired to notice some small mistakes in their arts when they pulled all nighter, or they don't have enough art knowledge & techniques. (I.e me) Instead we got: "you can't draw Cartoon/White Ariel in this scene because it's LA/Black Ariel's", "your Encanto characters skin are a few shade lighter, you're r*cist", "nooo this character is gay, why you draw straight ship of them? You're h*mophobic" (that character sexuality is just headcanon/fannon), "they're straight, why you draw them gay??" (again, just fannon), then twist your words and force you to "apologize". (But then again it's just Twitter, and Reddit in certain fandoms) At this point maybe we should have classes and seminars how to interact on internet, some people straight up become a demon on internet bc of anonymousity (idk if the word is correct or not)
Okay but yes, it is very bad to draw a character lighter then they genuinely are. It IS racist, and can be incredibly harmful and stereotypical. When media with characters colored lighter then their intended skin tone gets popular, it can be damaging to those ingesting it, especially poc. If it was unintentional, that’s different, you can just fix it and move on, but so many different people don’t fix their art, and just never say anything about it, which is horrible.
@@Metal4T33th no I don't mean like drawing black (actual color) skinned characters as brown (actual color) skinned characters (yes it can be r*cist intention). (I know some "people" can "prefer" brown skinned people and hate black skinned people, despite if both black and brown skinned people are from the same race). I mean like the artist made a mistake in coloring, like a little bit darker/lighter than usual but not straight up changing different, not everyone's eyes are sensitive with colors (like mine). Or the colors are in pastel, it can make skin looks a bit lighter when actually all colors are lighter. Or it's a filter. Or it's a lighting (because color theory). Or because it's winter because AFAIK black people can have tans on summer and their skin on winter became a bit lighter because the summer tan is gone. Etc. Just don't straight up accusing someone when you didn't see the "crimes" or didn't have any evidences, when the issue can be talked maturely. Some people can pulled the big gun suddenly when it could be just harmless mistakes.
I was art shamed twice, trying to adapt a a portrait into a mermaid and accused of it being AI, no apology after I showed my procreate process, and another of my version of the joker for a DC challenge with a play off the d*ck in the box, he's wearing a giant overcoat and gartered pantlegs and like a flashing pervert , but instead of exposing himself he's got a Jack in the box with a joker head on a spring popping out. Ha ha all around. I spent hours on it and this dude tried to make me feel bad for my hard work. I was insecure about my art as a kid in the 80s when the art shaming made me not show my art to anyone. To this day, I still have a hard time believing anyone pays for my art.
People really need to re-learn 'if you don't like a thing, just press the back button'. I see art pieces that don't appeal to me all the time, and that's okay! I may not like it, think it looks bad, but if the artist is happy with it then I'm glad for them! So...I press the back button and stop looking at it, and move on with my life. It's not hard!
I'm a professional artist and illustrator, but I don't really share my work on social media and practically have 0 online presence whatsoever because the online art community nowadays just seems way too toxic. Instead I just draw personal work for myself and personal study. It's freeing in a way to have no pressure to share or expectations for how people will perceive the work. It's too bad people out there are just so bitter and unnecessarily mean!
This really opened my eyes to me, as I’ve been the same for about 5 years now. I’ve tried sharing my art and ocs online, but never got any benefit from it nor even enjoyed it. I still draw, every day to this day now, since I was 10! I’m in my 20’s now and still draw my characters and concept artworks and expanding my interests with art, yet I don’t have any social media account apart from this UA-cam acc. I felt so out of place because I don’t share my art or ocs ANYWHERE, maybe to a few close friends, but now seeing more comments like this show up, I’m starting to feel kinda normalised yk. Anyway, I bet your art is awesome!! Edit: oh yeah, and I’m terrified of social media now. The toxicity is horrible, and I don’t think I can deal with even the slightest hurtful comment lol. People are really, really brave these days hiding behind their phone screens and demotivating artists or just being blatantly cruel for little to NO reason whatsoever.
Thank you for speaking on this. My god this was such a disgusting thing to watch. Especially because Kamii was blackmailed by another user and who tried to get her to publicly apologize for a number of ridiculous things otherwise they’d put out a compiled document of all the things they accused her of as fact.
Sadly that's the reason why i quit from the art community, i instead joined into photography community in there is so much more better, less hate and less toxic community...
Glad you found a positive place! It’s pretty surreal going from the art community to a community that isn’t hateful towards each other. It’s like Oh, this is what a community is supposed to be like!
Can I just say, I hate the "OH well it's my free speech, to say something rude to you and give criticism unpromped, so you can't be mad," because you know that if they REALLY believed that, they would have never responded with the above comment. Like said in the video if that's how it is we have the freedom to give our opinions on yours, so don't get mad bro, but nah it always end with them not just defending the take, which is fine, but also saying it's WRONG for artists to have an opinion against the unwanted criticism or rudeness.
It's basically "free speech for me, not for thee" a.k.a utter madness. It's like they willingly forget that free speech doesn't mean that they're free from consequences, or that it's not actually true free speech if only one party is allowed to say anything, smh
Somewhere around 15-20 years ago, I made the mistake of ridiculing a younger artists work after they won a small art competition I also entered and didn't win. At that time I had gotten rather full of myself and was pushing my art to diff levels and felt personally hurt when I felt the other artists who wasn't as advanced won instead of me. It was unfair of me to think that and even worse to comment publicly and put down their art which was actually quite lovely. They replied to me and explained how hurtful my comment was as they had looked up to me and my art for so long and I felt like such a jerk. I vowed from then on to never put my own art on a higher pedestal than other artists- that kind of toxic thinking isn't helpful. But I've also have issues with giving feedback to some artists as well- as many people are of the opinion if the artist didn't ask for a critique, not to give it and keep your opinion to yourself, even if you're polite. So overall, if I see something I feel could be improved upon, because of the reaction of many- I just keep my mouth shut, which I think is not good for an artists growth. All the same, I think that's one reason I avoid posting on Twitter... Movie was great tho, I'd love to see it again!
I love the art of Michaela O’Hara (my head canon name for her), I find it sad some people don’t like it 💜also wanted to add, art isn’t a one size fits all type of deal each persons art is unique to them.
There are a surprising number of people in this comment section who don’t like it either and some even say it signs alarms in their heads of “societal problems around muscular women expectations” I makes me sitting in the corner over here who thinks it’s really good piece start sweating over here
Man ironically everyone of these peeps who "Criticize" These artist's arts are the ones who want their "Canon event" to be the real one instead of facing reality, isn't thay funny? The irony due to the character drawn that is Miguel from SP: ATSV 😂
I feel like its extremely pathetic as an outsider to see people hyperfixated on bullying people, calling them bigots, or even suggesting them to harm themselves. If you do any of it, you are a pathetic bully ❤
I got people coming at my beginner art back in 2019 when I posted some of my past Art Fight attacks on my instagram. At that point, people being overly aggressive with artists was less common than it is now, but it freaked me out to the point I privated my account and didn’t touch it for months. It’s insane how much more intense it’s gotten; I’m still debating on whether or not to post my Art Fight stuff because of my issues back in 2019.
@@BloodMarket oh yeah I block people all the time, but the effects of those comments, especially in 2019 when my work got noticed by the wrong people, were a lot to handle and the pain definitely stuck around. I'm going to be completely honest. I hate the genserbending race washing sorta of art. Or the weird big hips art of a character that isn't anything like that in canon. However, I would never ever harass anyone over it. It's not my art and I'm not a snob like that.
I think the culture of places like twitter and tiktok make people think they have to have strong opinions about everything and harass anyone that disagrees 💀
I'm really tired of the art community at this point. People will make a problem over anything. I made some spiderverse fan art that I was really proud of, and of course there had to be someone insulting me and my art, even bringing up an older piece of mine from a year ago. It can really discourage artists from sharing their artwork, and getting the proper criticism they need.
I remember encountering a heated debate on a forum over one person's preference for pin-up legs in heels with a thigh gap vs another person's preference for thick thighs in stockings & bare feet. Clearly an epic battle between mortal enemies. I'd love to see you draw a Marvel or DC comic someday. I think your style is perfectly suited for super heroes & villains.
I dont have social media but the one shaming my art is my mother. Drawing people in an anime-like style is my forte. I even drew the profile youre seeing now and im quite proud of it! She says that my art isnt good and should draw a variety of things and not be fixated on drawing people. She believes that i as a self proclaimed artist(and aryists in general) should be able to make GORJOUS artworks in any medium, drawing anything under the big blue sky. I tell her that that is not true and that some artists just have a preferred medium/subject/style that we can make beautiful art in. But nooo, if my digital artist ass cant make a million dollar drawing of feet using crayola crayons im not an artist(she also says that i do too much anime and its not art, hence im not an artist. Like GURL). Im not sure if im the only one who has experienced this sort of criticism but to anyone who has: dont let it stop you. Even if someone doesnt appreciate you for the kind of artist you are, if you believe youre an artist, then you are. Dont let other people define who you are as an artist. If they do theyre toxic. If it makes you happy, keep doing what youre doing and find a safe space where you can share your art free of criticism. It can be your friends, online friends or even your pet. Somewhere, someone out there will love and support your art❤
I remember seeing it on twitter. i never understand whenever twitter finds a new character who has a big butt and just be horn dogs about it. especially when its a girl, then im just like, "how is this even a real thing" the most i wanted from the drawing was just miguel to be exactly the same but with eyelashes. my timeline was spammed with miguels ass so much, i had to mute the word
All offense, but you do not have to use twitter. Nobody is making art for YOU. They're making it for THEMSELVES. If someone wants to be a "horndog" then they have every right. People are allowed to be sexy and they are allowed to find sexy people attractive. If you don't like that, that's valid, but don't judge everyone else for doing what they want to do. It's not hurting you or anyone else. Butts are hot and I am sorry you are too boring to understand that lol
@nomoretwitterhandles butts are literally balls of fat, and so are boobs. I know the art isn't meant for me but the moment a character that was just released onto the world and the first thing people do is sexualize them, I'm not gonna lie: they weird as fuck. even when they only draw porn [which is really weird in itself], why is that your immediate reaction?
Right, but @ the person with the super long username, OP did everything right, no boundaries were overstepped here AFAIK. They didn't get it, were uncomfortable with it, and muted the word. They curated their internet experience and didn't harass the artists. It's okay for them to express their distaste. Maybe I am just bad at reading tone but it didn't seem shaming to me. I can't check while writing a comment on mobile.
Seconded. I feel like although it’s important to address the negative parts of the community and trying to combat them, it may be wiser to focus on the positive aspects of the community. Or even if you do tackle a negative subject, approach it from the angle of how to see if someone is offering legit criticism vs art shaming. You can’t stop people being toxic, you can only learn to mitigate how it affects you.
Lesson Learned: Don't even touch twitter. The amount of envious, hate loving, and sociopathic people on that platform are way beyond control. Deactivating my twitter account was the best thing I have ever done. I can't post about my own hobbies in there without someone trying to catch a fade.
You are so real for this video. I’ve noticed the same shaming happening on Tumblr recently. Both in art and fanfictions. Which is especially annoying because I don’t understand what their complaints will do besides put down fan artists and demotivate people from writing at all. Like if you’re that bothered by the incorrect usage of Spanish, why not be helpful and point to a source that can translate their sentences correctly or block them and write your own fanfics if it’s that much of a burden to see. Like Tumblr is the epitome of “curate your experience” it’s not that hard. For example, I don’t like any ship outside of ghostflower because I personally headcannon Hobie as being in his 20s close to my age (so like 24), and I feel weird seeing fics and art of roughly 16 year olds being with him because of that. I also blocked the tag of spiderdads because I think the erasure of Peter B’s MJ (and Gayatri when Pavitr is part of a ship like chaipunk) from the equation to be weird. And I’m not a hypocrite on that ick either because I’ve always felt that way when characters are canonically in love with a SO or spouse and the spouse/SO gets erased to be able to smush two characters that are otherwise friends/acquaintances/etc together. And honestly? My life is better for blocking those tags. Because I don’t have to see anything related to it and I don’t need to cry and whine about it.
I personally LOVED their take on her! Yes, I also loved the 'muscular/butch' interpretations as well, and honestly they're more what I would imagine, but this one was fine! It's a cute design and you can tell exactly who its supposed to be. People need to calm down. It's sad.
YES People really gotta chill with what they think a “muscular woman” should look like Like everyone keeps saying in these comments “oh she’s too hourglass” or “her butt is too big” As someone who actively works out for better muscle mass, they do not understand that certain body parts muscles can grow bigger without any of the others, so it is 100% possible to look like that, and she is muscular in that art, her arms and neck just aren’t inflated like lifter or strongmen muscles(which are that big through ludicrous methods and are only capable of doing the bare minimum of bodily functions) but apparently being muscular now has to have certain body proportions instead of actually defined muscles which is what most natural muscle looks like
@@aerickmon3350 The absolutely idiotic thing about the people complaining about the gender bend's butt is that Miguel in the movie (and the comics) has a really nice butt. There's hundreds of thirsty images of Miguel that focus on his ass, many of which exaggerate how big it actually is, and nobody has a problem with that, but giving a gender bent version of Miguel one of his defining traits is suddenly just the artisr being an icky pervert. As for the body shape being hourglass, it actually makes sense to me? Miguel in the movie has a top heavy build that is seen as stereotypical masculine beauty. A female character with a bottom heavy or hourglass frame is basically just the same thing.
The most infuriating part of this art shaming trend is when someone told an artist to "just use the color picker!" when they think their fan art's skin tone is "wrong". Yes, color picking official arts would get you the "correct" skin tone quickly, but it's a shortcut, and it won't teach you anything. By using color picker, you're robbing yourself the chance to learn color theory, how colors interact with each other and how your character's color changes according to the environment/color palettes. Unless you're planning to have your skill level stuck at drawing characters on black/white background, "just use the color picker!" is a terrible advice.
I also just hate the hypocrisy when it comes to these types of "critique". It's completely fine if someone wants to draw Gwen trans, but on the same boat it's completely fine to make Miguel a busty baddie. All types of headcannons (except ones that could put you on some kind of watchlist) in any fandom are allowed to be drawn. These wackos need to stop gatekeeping.
YES If people can have their fantasies and headcannon pieces around stuff like butch Gwen, or sexy cat maid Miguel Why are people like us silenced when we want a baddie mommy o hara, seems a little unfair isn’t it?
It's terrible to see how some artists are afraid to share their artworks online because of this art-shaming/bullying/harassment. I used to love sharing my art, even if it was a warm-up sketch, but now I'm terrified. Sadly, the art community is slowly getting worse over the years. You can't draw what you want without fearing being tied and burned at the stake. SMH.
Honestly I wanted to start sharing art but I didn't want to anymore after hearing stuff like this. I think it's really sad that people are art shaming others for just being beginners or drawing in a particular way. (Btw I really like your artstyle)
@@Kk-lt1hs no, but i’m still not the best at art for my age (25) and the fact i’ve been drawing for 15 years. i’m just not going to post my art online in case someone makes fun of the style.
this is the art equivalent of those old people who hate kids and act like they never were one as well as not wanting anything new to be built because the keep hanging onto their nostalgia of their neighbourhood when they were born
Thank you for talking about this! I seen so much hate on the Spiderverse side of twitter especially when it comes to Miguel O’Hara. I’m scared to post my own version of Miguel in my style. Luckily instagram seem more friendly towards Spiderverse Artist (at least what I see)
She is a little lighter, which I do seem to have a problem with, and she should also make her have a little more muscle if it’s the woman version if she’s the same as Miguel. I feel people are giving it hate bc most artist draw woman pretty skinny with an hour shape body when other woman wants representation and they don’t have it since its not a beauty standard
I just think the hour glass body is stupid, it’s sooo so rare to see it and you can’t work out to get it Miguel worked out so I feel like she would’ve to if it was a gender bend, she would at least have more muscles
I don’t like that stereotype either, but it’s not official art. It’s just an artist having fun so I don’t think people need to criticize them unless they say they want constructive criticism. Either way the harassment and bullying isn’t okay no matter what
In my opinion, any artist who shames other artists, especially those starting out, unnecessarily is not an artist worth praise. Artists should encourage other artists to grow and get better, not discourage them.
Man it hurts very bad like i saw this artist shared their fan art and the skin tone was a bit lighter than usual bcs of the lighting BUT there were people in the comment saying " make him darker " and " he deserves respect " also " you just whitewashed him " mind you the fanart skin is still dark but it became slightly lighter bcs of the lighting. I suppose they aren't artist
The really dumb thing is I have seen people complaining about fanart of the original Miguel being whitewashed when he's actually white. His skin tone is the only thing that's consistent in the original run and he was literally called lily white in universe. Also have seen people upset when his eyes aren't brown or red, despite the fact that he originally had GREEN eyes and due to his inconsistent coloring, had green eyes several times throughout the run, along with hazel, brown, red and even blue a few times.
This is why i go with the "I don't care 'bout what people say, i'm drawing what i love." It works especially because my art gets no visibilty at all but i can make my art peacefully
Thanks for your strong words. I personally just draw as well. On deviantart most comment I get on art is like "wow that's shit and you cannot improve bc I refuse to help you" after 10 comments conversation in. when others come and give me nice comments, they only come when I get attacked. not before usually.. like, I get that my art is not for everyone or how I can't do certain things bc of my disability.. but come on. i even write down what I tried to achieve in my drawing, meaning I let anything else just (schleifen, hinterherschleifen in englisch?) get dragged along since it isn't the purpose; not the point yk?
Reminds me how I wanted to make a comic series with my ocs but I am scared of doing so just because of how some people will go out of their way to attack anyone for the most minor thing they did 5+ years ago
i dont understand what's so difficult about just not being mean to random people for things that literally do not matter. there's so many problems in the world but one singular persons artwork they made because they have the freedom as an individual to do it is apparently enough to get people upset, these are actually pathetic human beings
Honestly I'm a young artist and I want to show my art online but because of this I hesitate. I get backhanded compliments a lot and it scares me to know a community that should be uplifiting and valuing unique skills is just.... dragging others down. People need to get new hobbies :(
I love yo videos, you always talk about these issues in an engaging and interesting way, not to mention you have amazing commentary. Your a very grounded person. That can be difficult to come by nowadays. Also the person who made the king pin style spider woman 2099 with the caption “ask and you shall receive” just had me dying. That was so funny.
they expect beginner/young artists to be good and when a young artist is better then adults, the adults bully them. Idk, people just grew so comfortable being assholes on the internet.. Love your videos, thank you for being a great commentator and artist.
2:33 a person commented on a tiktok i posted telling me ‘Tony stark doesn’t look like that’. The drawing was (obv) tony stark fanart, however, i have always liked to imagine that he has longer hair than in canon. So, i drew him with slightly longer hair. I was very happy about the drawing, because im usually not good at digital art, but that drawing came out very good. Now, im back at being nervous to post fanart of characters with tweaked designs.
This is why I keep my art offline for the most part *exept for my pfp* I’m a artist and have been for a big portion of my life, it’s sad knowing other artists are bring each other down instead of up. That’s not what art is supposed to be about, it’s about experiment and drawing things YOU want. Not what others want. It’s sad tbh
Ive been an artist for 12 years which still isnt a lot since im only 14 but there are some people excpect me to be damn picasso with everything figured out, your so right art should be what YOU want and unique to everyone, not what the weirdos online want
To use a quote from an anime I watched: "If I have the time to curse others, I'd rather use it to think about those precious to me". Constructive criticism is helpful, but many people don't bother to distinguish between a supportive idea for potential improvement and an insult based entirely on taste. If you don't like someone's art and have nothing constructive to say, then block them so it doesn't show up again. Humanity has to relearn the concept of live and let live, because by now it's "If it isn't to my liking, it's something that shouldn't exist" If it doesn't hurt you, ignore it. To those who try to live a kind life, keep going, you're the kinda person I wish there was more of. I sometimes catch myself falling into a negative mindset and no one is perfect, but we can always strife to be a better person than we were yesterday. Improvement starts with acknowleding your flaws. Yes, my comment was all over the place, but I hope ya'll have a good day and if you don't have one, I hope it'll get better. And never forget to spread some kindness if you can 🙌
this is 100% true. it's so baffling and discouraging towards artists, and like you said, it can make them much more insecure about their prized artwork that they love. they turn their opinion about it into something they feel like they are obligated to hate, just like the "criticizer" wants. it's so, so hurtful. it leads to tears, and even to self hatred. drawing is a coping mechanism for many people with personal burdens, and when someone bashes them on it, it can be a lead of depression even. i could go on, and sorry for my poor grammar you're awesome mohammed :)
Gregor just made a video about this with live service games and how people love to complain but will still partake in the product they are shaming. How some people may call for a boycott only to still consume that thing they are supposed to be against. And how people can't just stop using a thing but instead love to hate more than push the things they actually do love. It'd be so much more beneficial and less toxic if someone just supported the things they love and avoided stuff they despise, giving it less publicity. Like why do we have so many documentaries praising serial killers when that's exactly what they wanted- to be remembered in infamy. Why are we as humans so attracted to the negative? And what long term effects does that have on a person and community?
I’m so sorry for anyone who has had to deal with this! I’ve been part of a lot of different communities in my life and i’ve NEVER been shamed/harassed/threatened the way i have in the Art Community. I won’t even call myself an artist anymore, just a bro who likes to draw, paint, and sculpt 😅
Um, ignoring what was said in the video, I love your art-style and what you drew in this video! It reminds a lot of J.C Leyendecker (an incredible illustrator) and the way you draw is all so lovely 🤌
I do feel like it should have been a muscular women for migel O’Hara but I can’t be shaming their art because I’m not on the same level I can’t be yelling at them that their art is so bad when my is worse. I like the design and what if they don’t know how to draw muscles people would be more enraged if they drew the muscles wrong! So everyone has there own art and I agree with you art shaming is not good it’s unhealthy for our community.
I think the problem is the fact that people don't just pipe down. Across the spider-verse's story is about being unique, and people have seen the exact same body type used to death in genderbends. I personally believe people should stick to the skin tone, body type, and general features when genderbending. HOWEVER, if someone doesn't do that, why can't you be a decent person and respect that it's their art and their interpretation? I like the art that was shown, it's just not how I'd draw it. So I made my own art of Miguel as a woman. Crazy how that works, huh? Not harassing people for *their own interpretations.*
Ive seen a lot of people being art shamed and dogged on just because they didnt draw a specific character how they are "supposed" to look, theres nothing wrong with head canons, just let people be.
As a younger artist, I don't share my age onto the internet bc of the people who judge artists by their age and not their work. This has become a huge problem. I see people getting hate comments that are based only on how they "Should be better for their age" or "Are too young to have good art".
I hate when I get comments on my art videos (different account) giving me critique that I never asked for, or saying rude things disguised as advice and then getting mad when people call them out. My least favorite is when “more experienced artists” call your art easy to draw or saying they could do better. Or when old people say “No ones jealous of your digital art” etc etc words about how technology sucks and there no real talent anymore Edit: I forgot the idea that only 13 yo are talented and if you start art later in life you’re automatically bad or untalented
I really saw someone trying to blame the Spiderverse rather than the community. Like, a thing simply existing doesn’t make people act like this. It's been this way in several fandoms. To act like somehow Spiderverse existing is causing this behavior is ridiculous.
Yeah it’s any large fandom. The culture of social media, especially tiktok and twitter, is just so toxic that anything being discussed on a large scale will turn into people relentlessly harassing each other. Not to mention most of the people involved are kids and don’t know how to be respectful or think critically yet
I'm still remembered how people gone batshit over someone's artwork of Across The Spider-Verse about racist/confederate Spider-Man which many people think it is offensive. The sad part of this is that this type of Spider-Man also redeemed himself to be less racist said by the artist which most people tend to just forget about it. An example of not delving into deeper what's the meaning of one post. But i'm kinda understand that this is about "Everyone can be a Spider-Man" debacle which that kind of fan art is undertandable at best. I like their artwork of that character but i really wish it should stay away form people like StoneToss
its honestly just funny to think that people are taking trolls on twitter seriously. I mean it's twitter, the main cause of internet drama and birthplace of trolls. If people on twitter are hating on you then just don't give a shit and keep making them mad with what you post because it's funny. Eventually they will run away crying out of their mothers basements.

It's hurts me that an artist, who was genuinely happy to share their art, gets their art shamed by other artists. As you said, every artist has a different perception of beauty and some may like your art and some may don't. It's not an excuse to art shame people's artstyles which they have worked on.
i guess these people don't think that far about it and probably dont even see it that way..

Easy peasy. There are more important things in the world to worry about
yeah i agree, i wouldn't harass an artist over it but it's true that most of the time people just take away everything deemed 'masculine' for genderbent characters and make them look like they walked straight out a hentai LMAO it does make me pretty angry too sometimes because it seems that they can't distinguish between 'female' and 'sexual', they think that having a poonani means they need to be 10x more attractive

well that's another way to put it..i guess they were probably really young and just actin their age? or not?
@@MohammedAgbadi idk he claimed to be 18 in his Facebook bio but it's just so easy to fake your age this days
Sometimes I'm terrified to share my art because of how people are when it comes to art they don't personally like. It's disheartening
Artists are just hypnotized with hatred nowadays, it's just sad.
the community is not like it used to be!!!😭😭😭😭
I miss how the internet was pre-cancel culture.
It's awful. The art community didn't used to be AMAZING or anything, but it's definitely way worse now.
its mostly these sjw artists that turn everything into a movement, they hate you if you dont do a, b and c
it's not even artists, it's outsiders looking in and feeling like they have every right to attack artists for any perceived wrongdoing.
@@nomoretwitterhandlesyeah Twitter and Tiktok are awful for artists unless you are addicted to drama and harassing people. Instagram is starting to turn into those two but it’s slightly better lmao

this is such a huge problem in tiktok it infuriates me to no end,,
tiktok is just upper tier twitter at this point imo
I don’t like art trends like this one and I’m always annoyed by them so I just mute/hide them not go around insulting and being mean to people with 1 hour long paragraphs that completely discourage them from making art. I believe If you have nothing nice to say or genuine good criticisms that can help the grow than don’t say anything.
this is why I get scared to post my art, i was doing good until someone saw my art in a discord server and said it looked terrible and that I wasted for 4hrs on it 😭
bruuuUUUUuuuuUUUuuuhhhhhhh
That’s awful 😭 Don’t let them police where and when you post your art, they’re just ppl who have nothing to do. Honestly the best way to stop caring about it is to just treat it like you’re uploading to a portfolio. But don’t dwell on what chronically online ppl think, bc they are so deeply absorbed in their own circles that anything that doesn’t appeal to them is enough for them to bully others

Twitter is hella crazy like ya'll could've just said "Tbh considering that Miguel is a buff guy I think a more design-accurate genderbend of Miguel would be a muscular woman"
It gets across the same point without being rude
Though I feel like you wouldn’t even need to say that considering it’s unofficial art the artist made for fun, unless the artist said they wanted constructive criticism of course
@@thebuilder5271which they didn’t
Also if people really don't like the art. Make your own? And move on. I am sure the commenters can't even draw like the artist even nearly good.
(I.e me)
Instead we got: "you can't draw Cartoon/White Ariel in this scene because it's LA/Black Ariel's", "your Encanto characters skin are a few shade lighter, you're r*cist", "nooo this character is gay, why you draw straight ship of them? You're h*mophobic" (that character sexuality is just headcanon/fannon), "they're straight, why you draw them gay??" (again, just fannon), then twist your words and force you to "apologize".
(But then again it's just Twitter, and Reddit in certain fandoms)
At this point maybe we should have classes and seminars how to interact on internet, some people straight up become a demon on internet bc of anonymousity (idk if the word is correct or not)
Okay but yes, it is very bad to draw a character lighter then they genuinely are.

Ha ha all around. I spent hours on it and this dude tried to make me feel bad for my hard work. I was insecure about my art as a kid in the 80s when the art shaming made me not show my art to anyone. To this day, I still have a hard time believing anyone pays for my art.
yeah it must be difficult when you are doing your thing and then someone pulls overtime to just trash your work.

Especially because Kamii was blackmailed by another user and who tried to get her to publicly apologize for a number of ridiculous things otherwise they’d put out a compiled document of all the things they accused her of as fact.
that's so ridiculous! i hated it so much
Sadly that's the reason why i quit from the art community, i instead joined into photography community in there is so much more better, less hate and less toxic community...
There are a surprising number of people in this comment section who don’t like it either and some even say it signs alarms in their heads of “societal problems around muscular women expectations”
I makes me sitting in the corner over here who thinks it’s really good piece start sweating over here
Man ironically everyone of these peeps who "Criticize" These artist's arts are the ones who want their "Canon event" to be the real one instead of facing reality, isn't thay funny?
Can't you delete those comments since it's your content? Or just block them?
Agreeing with Rashalite here. Its okay to block people that are being rude for no reason.
Maybe set some boundaries in a post/bio
@@BloodMarket oh yeah I block people all the time, but the effects of those comments, especially in 2019 when my work got noticed by the wrong people, were a lot to handle and the pain definitely stuck around. Even now I still get nervous when I post, because of what happened years ago. I block/restrict people and clean out comments, but those are minimal and isolated. I can’t imagine having to go through that bs all over again, it seems like it’s only gotten worse in the past few years.
I'm going to be completely honest. I hate the genserbending race washing sorta of art. Or the weird big hips art of a character that isn't anything like that in canon.
However, I would never ever harass anyone over it. It's not my art and I'm not a snob like that.

It's sad.
Yes but it made her have an hour glass body and definitely not muscular like Miguel’s…. Which was the whole point of the drawing it was a gender bend
@@Kk-lt1hs I mean she looked semi-muscular. Could’ve gone a tiny bit heavier handed but it really wasn’t that bad.
YES
People really gotta chill with what they think a “muscular woman” should look like
Like everyone keeps saying in these comments “oh she’s too hourglass” or “her butt is too big”
As someone who actively works out for better muscle mass, they do not understand that certain body parts muscles can grow bigger without any of the others, so it is 100% possible to look like that, and she is muscular in that art, her arms and neck just aren’t inflated like lifter or strongmen muscles(which are that big through ludicrous methods and are only capable of doing the bare minimum of bodily functions) but apparently being muscular now has to have certain body proportions instead of actually defined muscles which is what most natural muscle looks like
@@aerickmon3350 The absolutely idiotic thing about the people complaining about the gender bend's butt is that Miguel in the movie (and the comics) has a really nice butt.
@@nightmarefanatic1819 exactly
They’re really out here like “standards for thee but for me”
The most infuriating part of this art shaming trend is when someone told an artist to "just use the color picker!" when they think their fan art's skin tone is "wrong".
That’s why I don’t do fanart lmao. And also color picking only works with 2D cartoon characters anyway
YES
If people can have their fantasies and headcannon pieces around stuff like butch Gwen, or sexy cat maid Miguel
Why are people like us silenced when we want a baddie mommy o hara, seems a little unfair isn’t it?
The people making nasty comments about exaggerated anatomy don’t understand anatomy.

(Btw I really like your artstyle)
art bullying is why i don’t post my art online anymore

I just think the hour glass body is stupid, it’s sooo so rare to see it and you can’t work out to get it
Miguel worked out so I feel like she would’ve to if it was a gender bend, she would at least have more muscles
It's one thing to give critiques that could actually help someone. It's another to shame and insult them.
This is why i go with the "I don't care 'bout what people say, i'm drawing what i love."
It works especially because my art gets no visibilty at all but i can make my art peacefully
Twitter users when fanart exist: 🤬 !!!
Like if youre so upset draw your own art. Or pay someone to do it, tf lol.
nah fo real they always hating on fanart
Literally both of the artist where just getting criticism 💀💀 that's how you become BETTER
Honestly I'm a young artist and I want to show my art online but because of this I hesitate. I get backhanded compliments a lot and it scares me to know a community that should be uplifiting and valuing unique skills is just.... dragging others down. People need to get new hobbies :(
art shamming has made me skeptical to share my art, bc i don’t want to get criticized for thousands of people to see

Wake up babe, Mohammed Agbadi posted a new video
lmfao 😆
2:33 a person commented on a tiktok i posted telling me ‘Tony stark doesn’t look like that’. The drawing was (obv) tony stark fanart, however, i have always liked to imagine that he has longer hair than in canon. So, i drew him with slightly longer hair. I was very happy about the drawing, because im usually not good at digital art, but that drawing came out very good. Now, im back at being nervous to post fanart of characters with tweaked designs.
My favorite is when someone goes back to my art from a year ago and provides a critique on it!
like wow! lmaoo art from the past smh
Fake fans pretending to know how Miguel looked for 20 years
This is why I keep my art offline for the most part *exept for my pfp*
I’m a artist and have been for a big portion of my life, it’s sad knowing other artists are bring each other down instead of up.
@@ladybugfurby thank you 🙏 as a young artist people like twitter users make it hard to continue
To use a quote from an anime I watched:
"If I have the time to curse others, I'd rather use it to think about those precious to me".
And never forget to spread some kindness if you can 🙌
The girl from the Miguel genderbeng even got harrased to the point of blackmail and got called nåží for being argentinian (???)
It’s like mike tyson says. The problem with the internet is ppl get too comfortable saying shit without expecting being punched in the face
Your vids don’t miss, good takes and good art in the background UGH 😩😩😩😩
thankyou!!!
this is 100% true. it's so baffling and discouraging towards artists, and like you said, it can make them much more insecure about their prized artwork that they love. they turn their opinion about it into something they feel like they are obligated to hate, just like the "criticizer" wants. it's so, so hurtful. it leads to tears, and even to self hatred. drawing is a coping mechanism for many people with personal burdens, and when someone bashes them on it, it can be a lead of depression even. i could go on, and sorry for my poor grammar
you're awesome mohammed :)
If I see a drawing I don’t like, I just ignore it. It’s sad how many people lack basic decency.
I wish I was a sim. I wish every time I drew for ten minutes my art skill went up and I was automatically 10% better. That would be great.
I can't answer any of this, but I have a feeling this is why there's such a thing as horror movies.
I LOVE YOU MAN, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, I WISH I COULD MAKE ART THIS GOOD❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much 😀
I’m so sorry for anyone who has had to deal with this! I’ve been part of a lot of different communities in my life and i’ve NEVER been shamed/harassed/threatened the way i have in the Art Community. I won’t even call myself an artist anymore, just a bro who likes to draw, paint, and sculpt 😅
If you dont like an artist just block them, it really isnt that hard.
So everyone has there own art and I agree with you art shaming is not good it’s unhealthy for our community.
i had smth like this happen recently and lost a friend over it bc their friend was mad that I drew a white character...as white. I wish I was joking💀
this is exactly why I do not share my art online especially on Twitter these people honestly annoy the fuck out of me.
THANK YOU!! Those “it’s a cannon event” shorts on UA-cam and TikTok guising as constructive criticism are making me froth at the mouth.
Love the Leyendecker inspired drawings, btw!
Ive seen a lot of people being art shamed and dogged on just because they didnt draw a specific character how they are "supposed" to look, theres nothing wrong with head canons, just let people be.
Yeah I still feel like people will jump me because I’m still learning about lighting, proportions of the body the nose the head etc
fr we all have something we are struggling with.. i wish everyone could understand this
As a younger artist, I don't share my age onto the internet bc of the people who judge artists by their age and not their work.
Or when old people say “No ones jealous of your digital art” etc etc words about how technology sucks and there no real talent anymore
Edit: I forgot the idea that only 13 yo are talented and if you start art later in life you’re automatically bad or untalented
Eventually they will run away crying out of their mothers basements.
they go silent after a while lol.
