He tears off his clothes, they didn’t find blood on his clothes, butchered, let me tell you, put it this way, butchered, she’s running, well she has a shed, butchered, again let me say, well put it this, butchered….., ugh finish your sentence!!!
I used to feel that way too until I got jury duty and it was great. That's what started me on this obsession, the Depp Heard trial happening the next summer cemented it, and I didn't even watch EDB then! Also I think you can volunteer for jury duty in your area, not sure how definite it is you get called. I've promised myself if anything happens in my area or even state I will avoid all coverage so maybe I can be in the jury!
No other inmate would be treated like this. They better get this shit undercontrol real quick. Inmates can't have pens, staples, paperclips etc. He was putting all kinds of stuff in his pocket
“But deputy, why can’t I, a supposed recovering addict of pills, take this little container of pill shaped things that someone else gave me back into custody with me?” 🤦🏼♀️
It’s rural country. Nothing really ever happens here. Nothing like this anyway. The property is about 1100 acres with lots of woods and trees…and wildlife.
👀👀 the property was "bought" from a friend who has connections to drug smuggling and an airstrip is on the property. I'm not making accusations but there may be reasons ppl don't want security cameras. Also Murdaugh's reputation probably means they have no fear of anything. And if there were cameras, you know there would have been some malfunction that night. Lastly, we only recently decided to get better outdoor lighting in our rural area (and security cameras at our church) only after our catalytic converter was stolen of our car that I left parked at my church. Ppl feel safe until there something happens to shatter that world view

Your rage for how this man acts like he owns the courthouse made me feel so much better. I was SCREAMING at the screen while my husband looked at me like I was nuts. He did say it sounded like he was listening to me. 🤣
Attorney general: “Within three minutes of Alec being at the scene of his family’s murders, they never answered their phones again” Defense: “Alec and his wife went to a baseball game together”
He’s speaking to southern people. They don’t believe in science or facts. They can’t wrap their head around daddy killing his boy. His wife, maybe. I can see him getting off on his sons murder.. but not his wife
The defense attorney seems like a Feelings over facts guy. Or he doesn't have anything else. If his client is innocent, he would be a grieving husband and father, and I would think his atty would want to show that. Maybe I'm being feelings over facts, but it seems very odd. I appreciated the timeline from the Prosecutor. This will definitely be interesting.
First time seeing a trail from jury selection. It feels like a whirl wind when they sat the jury, did opening statements and almost called a witness! Like woah! But I guess the jury members had days to set up the possibility of being on the jury. I hope to never have to be on a jury in a case like this. My face would not be able to hide what I am thinking and I just get the creepy feeling every time a certain person is on screen, let alone being in the room! Can't ever watch this without your commentary!
For those people like me that need to see a visual timeline on the cell phone activity on the night of the murder Phone records document the following: 8:15: Maggie arrives at Moselle property 8:15 to 8:30: Dinner 8:30: Paul's phone moves toward dog kennels 8:44:55: Paul records video of dog (Paul, Maggie, and Alec's voice heard in background) 8:49:01: Paul's phone locks forever 8:49:31: Maggie's phone locks forever 8:49:35: Paul receives text from friend that goes unread and unanswered 9:02: Alec's phone activity picks up (phone had lack of activity from 8:O9 pm -before Maggie's arrival) 9:04: Alec calls Maggie's phone that goes unanswered and then Alec's phone calls Randolph's (goes unanswered) 9:06: Alec calls Maggie's phone again (goes unanswered), gets in Suburban vehicle and then texts Maggie he is going to visit Mom 9:06 to ~9:20: Alec drives to Mom's place in Almeda 9:44: Alec leaves his Mom's place 10:01: Alec returns to Moselle property 10:06: Alec calls 911 Defense will need to argue that from after the video was taken 8:44, that Alec was away from the kennels possibly at the main house that was 1/3 mile away from kennels (but still in visual sight) that someone else did it and he didn't hear the multiple gunshots or see Maggie dead outside as he drove away from the property at 9:04 - or - Maggie and Paul did not use their phones after 8:49, but were killed between 9:06 when Alex left to 10:01 when he returned to Moselle
So either they were killed in the 19 minutes after the video was taken (8:44) but Alec didn't see or hear anything before he left at (9:06) -or- Both Maggie and Paul didn't use their phones for about 17 minutes (8:49 to 9:06) after the video but before Alec left Moselle and then were killed in Alec's 55 minute "alibi" I think this will be a staggering uphill battle for the defense
I was here for the Prosecutor’s opening and on the rewatch for for the defense. Thanks for your commentary and coverage of this case!! I joined and became a law nerd yesterday after watching you cover the Depp vs Heard and loving your content!
Wow. The DAs opening statement was powerful. The timeline he laid out, with video to back up the phone pings, is just...damning. I'm interested to see how the defense will attempt to poke holes in that... the imagery alone is heart-wrenching.
I grew up with a dad who was a big hunter. The defense using the word butchered over and over may end up back firing on him. A hunter shoots and kills and then butchers the kill. He emphasized all the guns and hunting, so yes, I can imagine him doing this. He could have easily gone into the mindset of a hunter who would butcher his kill.

What I got from the defences' opening argument: "Butcher, butcher, butcher, innocent, loves his son, butcher, innocent, we don't have to prove anything, butcher, innocent. "
The "head split like a watermelon hit with a sledgehammer" imagery is over the top! I mean, if you really think your client is innocent, it feels so disrespectful. I get he's trying to say that no loving father could be that savage to their son, but the reference feels just gorey and thoughtless.
"Butchered, exploded brains, butchered, loved his family, butchered, more brains, brains, brains, innocence, butchered brains, BRAINS EVERYWHERE, BLOOD EVERYWHERE, butchered, INNOCENCE." I was over it pretty fast because the imagery became comical to me. If you continually described something to me in graphic detail, using words that are over the top, I'll just stare blankly at you like 😒💅 "Sure."
It's so interesting watching both yours and Nick Rekieta's opinions on this case and the different ways that you perceive this (you from a prosecution standpoint and Nick from a defense standpoint). I really wish that the two of you did more streams together because I love the differing view points and the way that you bounce things off of eachother.
Hey Emily! Look into the early actions by the original DA please. I think the way they handled this in the beginning has an effect on their ability to produce forensic evidence. The original prosecutor was friends with Alex. Also, John Murdaugh picked up the phone. Alex's brother. He was on the scene during the investigation.
I love the commentary, most importantly, because I need to understand what I am watching and hearing. Seeing a trial is one thing but comprehending is a whole different thing. This is especially true when it comes to the law, which I tend to be ignorant of. I enjoy this so much, but I also appreciate it. Thank you.
Anyone here after the Netflix doc? Now that I'm more aware of what this case is about and can understand better what's going on. This case will be very interesting.
I have never watched a trail live like this but it feels so intense watching it!! Thanks for doing these. Absolutely love your channel and I’m so excited to continue watching these with you and the Law Nerds community! ❤
Emily, i'm watching late because i was busy doing mom things and it took longer than anticipated. But when you said "Timmy!" in reference to the South Park character, i laughed 😂 love it!!
First case I’m watching “blind”. I barely know anything about this case or Murdaugh himself. Only heard tidbits here and there. I specifically tried to NOT research this so I can act as if I’m a juror and going in blind. I truly want to see how each side does without any bias from me swaying my opinion. Interested to see how I view things vs everyone else who knows more about his history and this case!
I found this wonderful lady during the Depp trial. She inspired me, and I dyed my hair purple to celebrate his big win. Now I'm back for this murder trial. I thought Alex was guilty when I first heard about it.
When you were talking about transitory generational families in LA it reminded me of the movie Rumor Has It with Jennifer Aniston. All the older men in the movie say, “Nobody comes from Los Angeles. Everybody comes to Los Angeles." But if you _do_ come from Los Angeles, chances are you come from Pasadena.”
Reply Krewe (the New Orleans way we spell it as in “Mardi Gras Parade Krewe” Endymion/Bacchus/Muses) here… I saw a news report about this case shortly after it happened, and different investigative reporting agencies and true crime shows quickly followed suit. As a Southerner, the “Good Ole Boy” system is frighteningly familiar. Old money families have a disproportionate amount of influence over the justice system and law enforcement. This case is INSANE!!!!
ya know, at the beginning of the defense's opening, i was actually really impressed and a little swayed. and then he kept talking... and talking... and talking... and i think he lost me at "We don't have to prove anything!" and then lost me again at "you [the jury] protect us from them--the government!" and then again when misstating the witness testimony. his argument went downhill, through a window, up the road, hiked a mountain, off a cliff, across the ocean, grabbed by a crab boat, thrown in the trash, and ended up in a wasteland. 😂
Thank you for covering this. First time following this kind of trail from the start. Being in Europe I will prob try to catch the am streams live and do the pm as replay, so great that you divide them up as two separate streams.
Hi Emily, replay crew here due to time zone in Australia. I hate to say this but I really think he is going to be proven not guiltily at this point. Thank you so much for these lives, I love your humour and sass, you make me laugh every day. xxx
As of right now I also have a lot of doubts about the evidence. I think the investigation likely wasn’t initially interested enough in collecting evidence against him.
I disagree, I think the cellphone evidence will be strong enough to solidify he was at the crime scene when it happened. given their property is in the middle of nowhere and is massive, the fact his location is precise to the time of the murder and he magically leaves in his truck right after the murders were done. then he comes back and calls 911 an hour later is going to do him in.
i've normally been part of the live crew but will have to switch over to replay crew this trial. i warned my husband that he will be seeing a lot of you on my monitor for the next few weeks lol i do like the fact that i don't get FOMO if i need to pause the video to get up to do something then have to play catch up with the chat though! i was able to watch depp v heard live because i had an awesome office mate that didn't mind me watching it (and she was low key interested in the case as well) but now share with my boss who doesn't mind background noise, per say, but hates even NPR/talk radio playing all day. couldn't imagine what she'd think of live court proceedings with the random loud cuss words interjected lol. plus, going on a week long vacay to paradise next week so will have a LOT of catching up to do when i get back. much
I can’t follow the defense attorney. I’m confused between the “ummm”s, interjecting thoughts mid sentence, using terminology I don’t know and stumbling over his words. My brain is screaming “too much brain power required, let’s go look at comments.” I’m glad I’m not on the jury because I’d feel really guilty for my brain tuning out. Emily, I love your interjections! I talk to videos all the time and now find I’m talking to you. Haha

For those people like me that need to see a visual timeline on the cell phone activity on the night of the murder
Phone records document the following:
8:15: Maggie arrives at Moselle property
8:15 to 8:30: Dinner
8:30: Paul's phone moves toward dog kennels
8:44:55: Paul records video of dog (Paul, Maggie, and Alec's voice heard in background)
8:49:01: Paul's phone locks forever
8:49:31: Maggie's phone locks forever
8:49:35: Paul receives text from friend that goes unread and unanswered
9:02: Alec's phone activity picks up (phone had lack of activity from 8:O9 pm -before Maggie's arrival)
9:04: Alec calls Maggie's phone that goes unanswered and then Alec's phone calls Randolph's (goes unanswered)
9:06: Alec calls Maggie's phone again (goes unanswered), gets in Suburban vehicle and then texts Maggie he is going to visit Mom
9:06 to ~9:20: Alec drives to Mom's place in Almeda
9:44: Alec leaves his Mom's place
10:01: Alec returns to Moselle property
10:06: Alec calls 911
Defense will need to argue that from after the video was taken 8:44, that Alec was away from the kennels possibly at the main house that was 1/3 mile away from kennels (but still in visual sight) that someone else did it and he didn't hear the multiple gunshots or see Maggie dead outside as he drove away from the property at 9:04
- or -
Maggie and Paul did not use their phones after 8:49, but were killed between 9:06 when Alex left to 10:01 when he returned to Moselle
Thanks!
Thank you
So either they were killed in the 19 minutes after the video was taken (8:44) but Alec didn't see or hear anything before he left at (9:06)
-or-
Both Maggie and Paul didn't use their phones for about 17 minutes (8:49 to 9:06) after the video but before Alec left Moselle and then were killed in Alec's 55 minute "alibi"

The "wait that's not what I was trying to do" has me laughing in tears
Thank you.
Found this late but super excited to see you comment on this!
Pickle name: Dill V Heard (the V stands for Vlasic)
Replay crew! I like to watch the L&C fed
And the rewatch with Emily commentary to see how much I understood!
Wow. Lead prosecutor is completely riveting. The moment he holds up the cell phone - I love that. Dramatic gesture, brilliantly played.
Same. I basically know nothing about this case.
I found this wonderful lady during the Depp trial. She inspired me, and I dyed my hair purple to celebrate his big win.
Now I'm back for this murder trial. I thought Alex was guilty when I first heard about it.
Been following since the boat crash. The twists and turns are unbelievable. Finally Seeing and hearing from all the players is so fascinating
Wow, that was a strong opening statement by the prosecution.
i love your commentary even on the lawyers choice of words. cranking? what is he cranking the CAR? 😂❤
Hello from Ottawa, Canada. Today was excellent! Can’t wait until tomorrow morning.this trial is moving QUICK.
Im from Toronto 😋
@@DaniAlexandria I'm in Hamilton! Hope y'all are safe in all this snow!
Emily saying "we'll wrap for the day" when there's 45 minutes left on the stream 🤣
8:49. HELLO!
Hey hey miss Emily D. Baker. Always love your take. ❤
Damn, I was not ready for the graphic details.
New to the channel and decided to start binge watching this case. Only needed three livestreams to understand why deliberation was so short. 😂
Reply Krewe (the New Orleans way we spell it as in “Mardi Gras Parade Krewe” Endymion/Bacchus/Muses) here…
I saw a news report about this case shortly after it happened, and different investigative reporting agencies and true crime shows quickly followed suit. As a Southerner, the “Good Ole Boy” system is frighteningly familiar. Old money families have a disproportionate amount of influence over the justice system and law enforcement.
This case is INSANE!!!!
“Wait! She had a she shed??!” “Crank up the car…What kind of car was he driving?!” A STUDEBAKer!! HAHAHA
ya know, at the beginning of the defense's opening, i was actually really impressed and a little swayed. and then he kept talking... and talking... and talking... and i think he lost me at "We don't have to prove anything!" and then lost me again at "you [the jury] protect us from them--the government!" and then again when misstating the witness testimony. his argument went downhill, through a window, up the road, hiked a mountain, off a cliff, across the ocean, grabbed by a crab boat, thrown in the trash, and ended up in a wasteland. 😂
Thank you for covering this. First time following this kind of trail from the start. Being in Europe I will prob try to catch the am streams live and do the pm as replay, so great that you divide them up as two separate streams.
Greetings from U.K. Just discovered Emily, wonderful channel and community, i am hooked.
1:14:39 you weren’t kidding about it being graphic my gosh 😳
G'day from Australia 🇦🇺
I'm a true crime fanatic and stumbled across your channel yesterday and I'm hooked !
Timestamp "the audacity" is everything !
Best community and best commentary.
Man smh, 00 Buck from a 12 gauge is NO JOKE! I have a pretty good idea of what Paul’s head looked like…..
I'm behind and just now watching. Thanks for your commentary Emily!
Thanks for the coverage Emily. Not thinking about watching it anywhere else! You are the best 👍😀👏
Replay crew! Thanks so much for this!
"Cranking" a car is a typical southern expression.
Hi Emily, replay crew here due to time zone in Australia. I hate to say this but I really think he is going to be proven not guiltily at this point. Thank you so much for these lives, I love your humour and sass, you make me laugh every day. xxx
Agree
Thinking same. No forensics and no blood spatter. Circumstantial evidence is good but for a murder?
I tend to agree. And its horrible. Hopefully the financial shit will keep him locked for life.
Replay crew and I’m going to try not to comment all the way through like I would a live 😂
It's so hard though!!! I get it.
i've normally been part of the live crew but will have to switch over to replay crew this trial. i warned my husband that he will be seeing a lot of you on my monitor for the next few weeks lol i do like the fact that i don't get FOMO if i need to pause the video to get up to do something then have to play catch up with the chat though! i was able to watch depp v heard live because i had an awesome office mate that didn't mind me watching it (and she was low key interested in the case as well) but now share with my boss who doesn't mind background noise, per say, but hates even NPR/talk radio playing all day. couldn't imagine what she'd think of live court proceedings with the random loud cuss words interjected lol. plus, going on a week long vacay to paradise next week so will have a LOT of catching up to do when i get back. much
Emily, looking fiiiine as always, greetings from Belgium ❤️🇧🇪
Yodeling pickel was a fantastic addition imo
Can confirm - lived just outside of town, but had a cabin on 295 acres in Minnesota. We also had gun room.
Rewatch crew, but that rundown of the timeline and all of the things that have happened was greedy and super helpful
is it known what Alex was wearing on the two snap chat videos right before the murders?
Excellent question!! I hope prosecution addresses this and the gunshot residue question.
Unless I misunderstood, it was only his voice on the videos, no pictures of him.. So, I'd assume they don't know what he was wearing..
I really love your commentary explaining things 😁
Liked and subscribed loving your channel and content
This moment when you said note the time, it's 3:33p, the devil's hour!
Haha
Omg your comments about the mints have me in stitches
Love the everything flat pretzels! Glad to catch on replay!
How unusual is it that the office of the AG prosecutes a case?
I’m listening to the replay. Just started openings. Dammmmmn! Wow!
I think they have the courtroom locked down. No electronic devices. People may not want to be that restricted. They are streaming it to another room where electronics are permitted, I think.
If you don’t have a Chat is Bae T shirt I would like to request one. 😊
Oh wow I had no clue u lived in Seattle and went to Seattle University! I work at UW School of Medicine. I recently joined your channel and LOOOVE your insight, personality, and how u break things down thoroughly.
Replay crew!!! I’m late to this trial. I was watching the Mark Jensen retrial.
He doesn’t show one grief muscle during the entire opening statements. That’s enough for me.
Let's just say he did nap after dinner. How could anyone sleep thru all those gun shots and not go investigate?
A very very good question....unless they argue that shooting on the property is so common he wouldn't have noticed about.
@@TheEmilyDBaker but even a hunter would not shoot that many rounds. A hunter knows their is only one chance and it better be on point! Also what r they hunting at night with a buckshot? Did it have night vision/heat element scope? I have questions for that argument 😅
he didn't nap after dinner considering there's a snap chat video of the dog where you can hear Alex and Maggie talking in the background. that blows the nap theory
Pickleangelo !! what a great suggestion! As is Lurkin Gherkin!
Emily eating popcorn is a MOOD 🙌🏼
i just wanted to reach through the screen a PUSH UP THOSE MAN'S GLASSES omfg 😂
