Zhou Shen has never faked a performance and he takes pride in his abilities, he insists on live vocal performances and value authenticity
This is technically not a live performance recording though. It's an official clip from the TV show Supervocal, and it's normal for TV shows to edit and adjust things before broadcast, even if it's not to the betterment of the performance. Just normal industry rules and has nothing to do with Zhou Shen's ability.
She knows her stuff so she's probably right. My audio isn't great, but it definitely sounds like it's been manipulated in places - though more likely at the behest of the show's producers than a choice of his. Producers everywhere are obsessed with fiddling about with singers' voices in post-production, regardless of how good they are. Freya is saying that pitch correction is really not needed here, and for her, it actually detracts from the natural beauty of his voice. She's not criticising Charlie but rather the industry practices that have made this kind of interference the norm.
Coach seems to be an expert. She emphrasizes that the editing was unnecessary. The original might be even better.

I love Charlie (Zhou Shen) . This video was done in 2018/19, at that time, he wasn’t so famous. Nowadays, he has successfully been one of the top singers in China and just been invited to UN to sing in the Chinese Book Day in late April 2024! Well done Shen Shen (that how we like to call him); thank you for the professional comments and wish to see more of the comments from you on Charlie! ❤
He is our Pride and Joy ❤❤❤ he just returned from New York's UN headquarter they invited him for the Chinese Language Day and the director introduced him as a big figure from China and is an honor to have him there, by the way there is no auto-tune He refuses to have that 😮
You have not even begun to understand what he is capable of. He always sings live. He is a master a tone and is capable of all kinds of tonal changes. He is often mistaken for applying affects on his voice but it’s all him. Check out his soprano singing in China in Lights, Dalabengba all five voices are him, Song of Heaven Island to hear his power. Disney asked him to do the Chinese release if I’m a Star feom the movie Wish. The original had 28 singers and Charlie did all the voices himself. He is a wonderful humble and funny guy. He does not use autotune.

Welcome to your journey of Charlie Zhou Shen. You will always be impressed with his stage performance. He usually sings better in live, 😂, with richer emotion. He has different characters in his voices. Your next song should be “達拉崩吧”. He has hundreds of good songs that worth listening to, but “達拉崩吧” is the song that is absolutely the opposite of “memory” and a little show case of him in one song. This is a recorded performance (of a live performance) which means that has gone through post production, so the sound has been edited. HunanTV/MangoTV tend to overdo ths sound editing in their music shows

Performed live at the recording, but it's for a TV show, so it was adjusted by MangoTV before broadcasting on TV and uploading to websites. Par for the course for TV shows.

no doubt, but that doesn't prevent TV producers meddling with singers' voices, no matter how good they are. She can hear that he absolutely doesn't need pitch 'correction'; and she feels that the over zealous use of it actually takes something away from the natural beauty of his voice. Its the tiny variations in pitch, as a singer lands on a not or sustains it, and the unique colour of their vibrato, that give voices their character, expression and humanity.

The EE part that you mentioned is so spot on. That’s what’s so hard about singing in Chinese because a lot of words should be enunciated with a clear sharp EE to be heard correctly, and that’s where people need training using nasal resonance in balance.
