    That's so awesome! I love seeing reviews of California backyard mangos! Unfortunately, as you mention we lack the heat and also have fungal pressures that prevent many mango varieties from being full size.

    Would you say mangos are true to seed for the most part? And if I grow one from seed, should I expect the seedling to produce a fruit with at least half of the characteristics of the mother tree? I’m curious because someone is offering me a cheap sugar loaf seedling but I don’t know if it’s worth growing it and waiting for fruit if it’s not going to taste like sugarloaf. Thank you for your help!

    I planted a mango tree from seed for about two years. I have to wait three more years for it to bear fruit!? Maybe I will get a scion from you the next time I go to So. Cal. or (you can bring me one if you are coming to the Bay Area ) to graft to my tree. Hopefully I can get mango sooner.

  • @jbirdfunk
    @jbirdfunk 10 місяців тому

    I have grown several Sweet Tart mango seeds out this summer and have a question about the polyembryonic-ness of them. These seeds throw up 3 to sometimes 6 stems, and apparently only 1 is genetically a clone of Sweet Tart. However, when I remove the potting soil and look at the plant it does not look like 6 separate plants, rather there is like a "backbone" where all of the shoots come out of and the backbone grows all the roots, so it really looks like it's 1 plant? Or is it that the other tissue from stems is just merged like a graft to the roots?

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  10 місяців тому +1

      That’s a tough question. They’re so variable and sometimes unpredictable. I’ve separated embryos in the past, but I’ve also had ones that form single shoots

    • @jbirdfunk
      @jbirdfunk 10 місяців тому

      @@AJTheGraftMan when you plant poly seeds and get several sprouts do you let them all grow? Or pick the best looking one and cull the others? I’ve read about crushing leaves and smelling them to figure out which is the clone but to me they all smell alike 😂

    • @jbirdfunk
      @jbirdfunk 10 місяців тому

      I’m also doing a inarch graft from on of the smaller stems into the bigger stem thinking I was making a double rootstock, but turned out the stems are already attached at on of those “backbone” looking things at the top of the roots.

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  10 місяців тому +1

      @@jbirdfunk I let them all grow. Feels more natural. Keep the family close together 😂

    I’m guessing squirrels, opossums raccoons and rats would love to get a hold of a mango. Do you protect your mangoes in anyway? I have to put netting around my avocados if I want to be able to harvest them. My neighbor was doing some yard cleanup, and he said he found 30 avocado seeds in his yard. Squirrels take my avocados to his yard where they can relax. 😞 Also, how long do you think the mango trees can stay in a pot?
    I’m happy to see you’re still making videos. I have not been able to spend much time in my yard this past year.

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  9 місяців тому

      I don’t protect the mangoes. Yes squirrels are relentless with avocados. They will strip a whole tree of fruit. Mangoes can stay in pots for a few years I think, but they need bigger pots. Thanks for watching

    • @justbeachy2031
      @justbeachy2031 9 місяців тому

      @@AJTheGraftMan relentless is definitely the right word. I cannot let my trees grow very high here due to view ordinance. A couple of things have worked until it doesn’t. It sounds crazy, but I have taken plastic food containers and snap them over the avocado. If there’s a group of avocados together, I can wrap them in tule Or some kind of mesh. I have even used the netting that onions come in. It works for quite a while as long as they think it’s a trap.
