Caught in a Snow Storm in Iceland - I Almost Didn't Make it Out...

  • Winter in Iceland can often be unforgiving. And so is driving in Iceland. I was reminded that once again after nearly getting stuck in snow during first bigger snowstorm here in Troll Peninsula, North Iceland. Let me show you what is it like to travel here during weather like this on winter solstice when barely get 4 hours of light.
One thing I didn't mention is that my old Toyota Hiace van is 4x4 (awd) which was the only reason I got out of this situation. And that's why I always say, if you're traveling to Iceland in the winter, rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Jan, I agree that you need a Jeep or a truck! That is quite some snow you have there. Here in Maryland, USA, if we get one inch of snow, everyone panics and stocks up with toilet paper! Sometimes, the forecast predicts snow and the schools close, and then the snow doesn’t arrive.

I know, I it is just not easy to decide for me because of how good the van is for summer camping haha. Wow that is interesting. I know that the schools can close here too because of the snow, but that usually just in case of some very strong storm and all roads blocked. I guess people it is just all about what people are used to. Thank you for sharing Mary and Happy Christmas!

It's easy to me to say how beautiful the snow is and how much I like the homes with Christmas lights on them, since I live in western Oregon that seldom gets snow. I've lived in several places where we had snowy winters, most notably Alaska, and I miss it sometimes. So thank you for the video! I'm getting my winter snow vicariously this year!

When I moved here I was making fun that people leave the Christmas lights up the whole winter, but in recent years I've been doing the exact same thing haha. It's just so cozy especially when it's snowing heavily like tonight . I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) Mary Christmas Patricia!

That's such a brilliant video, filming yourself moving, and then going back for the camera, you are heroic, Jan! Be careful not to let melted snow get near the air intake of your car's engine, or to let the car induct too much powder snow. Have you got all wheel drive? You must have. I was vaguely looking forward to some news from you about the volcanic activity on Reykjanes - I know that it's the other end of the country hundreds of kilometres away. But I prefer to hear the Iceland news from you! How much actual daylight do you currently get - 2 hours? Merry Christmas to you!

Thanks buddy! Yeah that's good point, but all I could do then was to hope for the best haha. Yes it is a AWD but I would probably need a truck on 38'' - oh well, maybe some day. Yeah I know, I was hoping to cover it in person, but I was stuck up north due to some work and before I managed to leave the volcano stopped. But is is just a matter of time when it will start again. And we don't get much light now,I think it is around 3hrs, but from now on days will be getting longer again, finally! Happy holidays to you too!

2 guesses for what you said when it beeped 😂 wow, bit of a driving hazard! I’m seriously wondering about my decision to come from an Australian summer to an Icelandic winter 🤣 We had the coldest Christmas Day in 20 years, only got to 20c 😁😁😁 3 weeks till I leave & I cannot wait.

haha don't worry you'll be fine! I'm just hoping you'll get some good weather - is this going to be your first time experiencing winter like this? 20 C is my favourite temperature - that's also the warmest it gets here during the summer 😀

Hi Jan, your little home looks so nice an cozy with it all lite up in the darkness. Thanks for sharing this video of life in a Snowstorm in Iceland. Glad that you made it back up your hill and back home safely. The Red Jeep that we saw in town with 4 Wheel drive and big tires would be perfect at such a time. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2024.

Hello Ben! It is very cozy to be here now, especially when it snows a lot like tonight. I'm glad I made it out, but there sure will be some digging after this storm. But that's ok, I call it a free gym haha. I might get something like that in the future, but it is a tough decision because the van is so good for camping. Thank you and happy Christmas to you too!

Hi, first of all Merry Christmas! I’ve been to Iceland two summers in a row, I’m planning another trip this July to the Westfjords and the highlands. How many days do you recommend for the Westfjords ? Thanks

    • @janiniceland
      @janiniceland  6 місяців тому +1

Hi, thank you and same to you! As always, it depends - i think at least 3-4 days, just to drive all through the region is around 700km. It is a quiet relaxing place with countless of breathtaking views and hidden fjords you can drive or hike to so you can spend as much time as you want and not get bored of it. I think I went there for about 4 days last time, but it will be at least a week next time I go there :)

@@janiniceland Great! Thank you so much Jan for taking the time for answering . I thought abt 4 days as well, but I wasn’t sure. So, it’s great to get some tips from somone who knows the region.
I’ve booked 10 days for this coming trip which I booked last night.:) for the Westfjords and the highlands and maybe something else as well, since we have already done the ring road twice. I will be driving all the way up from Keflavik I’m won’t take the ferry as I don’t cope well with sea sickness.
I just need to work on the itinerary now and accommodations . Thanks so much and wishing you a lovely and healthy 2024. I always enjoy your videos, they are very helpful. Greetings from NYC.

You're welcome :) I've only explored upper part of the highlands around Askja so I don't know many places there but westfjords I love the area of southern part of the region with white sand beaches and places like Rauðasandur, Látrabjarg cliffs and Patreksfjörður and Tálknafjörður (cool hotpsring there too). Have a great trip and happy new year! @@blankiki
