Just the kind of tutorial I neede. Quick and easy to understand. Kudos !!! Keep making for the new versions as well.
This has been the most confusing thing to put together until seeing your smart and simple tutorial on how to set page numbers across a whole document. THANK YOU! Appreciate the time you took to put this together :)

You're welcome...and thank you so much! :)
Best tutorial out there, concerning numbering pages. A big thumbs up and a big thanks.
Thank you! One extra tip - add a layer and put the master page numbers on it, then lock the layer - then they’ll always be on top (if you have a pic bleeding off the page or something like that). Thank you so much for the comment!
Thanks! I think the example you used for this tutorial is brilliant! I have just started learning InDesign, a couple of days ago, and I have almost learned everything. (I have been on Photoshop and Illustrator for 4 years now).
Yes, I feel like InDesign shares a lot of similarities with Illustrator, so if you know that, it translates over pretty well.
Yeah. It's fun! I am addicted already.
Simple & traight forward I'm with you
I am so glad you made this video!!!! I dont usually comment on videos, but you made my crappy day so much better! so helpful! thanks, thanks, thanks!!!!
Aww thank you so much! And I hope your day gets better. :)
Great explanation. This video needs more likes and comments
Thank you!
Great tutorial and love your calm and normal voice that just makes it easier to watch :)
Awww thank you!!
Awesome. Thank you. I’ve taken several years off from graphic design, and it seems my muscle memory is gone. I appreciate that you covered what I needed to know thoroughly and concisely. Best yet, you included the key commands, which will help bring back my muscle memory.
You're welcome! I'm so glad it helped!
this is soooo DIRECT to the point tutorial. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
You're welcome...and thank you!!
GREAT tutorial, thankyou. One question: if you have an image or a colour-filled shape stretched over a pages a background (also, is that the wrong way to do it?) how do you get the page number to come to the front?
Thank you! You'll need to add a layer and put the master page numbers on it, then lock the layer - then they’ll always be on top (if you have a pic bleeding off the page or something like that).
Just the info I needed can't thank you enough keep making more valuable tutorials like this. Really really appreciated.
Thank you so much!! I'll try!
hello. i use rectangle tool as my background color, but if i using it, my page number is doesn't show up. can you tell me how to fix it?
You can add a layer and put the master page numbers on it, then lock the layer - then they’ll always be on top (if you have a pic bleeding off the page or something like that).
this is literally the best tutorial on this
Thank you so much!!
Thanks for this! I have a problem where the numbers are stuck to the bottom layer of the page. My pages have pictures and text boxes everywhere and I can't seem to bring the page numbers forward. Can you help?
Hi Julien, you can add a layer in your layers window, on top of the other layers. Then put the master page numbers on it, then lock the layer - then they’ll always be on top (if you have a pic bleeding off the page or something like that). Thank you so much for the comment!
Thank YOU!! This stumped me in college haha and you explained it so much better
You're welcome - and thank you, that is a huge compliment!!
Wow thank you so much for this video, it wasnt too long, I understood everything, and now I know something new!
Awesome; you're very welcome!!
Thank you so much for this! I followed all the steps, but my page #s are behind all my placed layers. How can I fix this?
Hi Rachael, you can add a layer in your layers window, on top of the other layers. Then put the master page numbers on it, then lock the layer - then they’ll always be on top (if you have a pic bleeding off the page or something like that). Thank you so much for the comment!
I need to know the answer also. Did you find a solution??
@@catherinebassetti9005 the solution is just above your comment as a reply to the original question. ^^^
hi, had issues with the numbers being covered by my images or shapes, how do i make the number appear on top of the images on my page
You can add a layer and put the master page numbers on it, then lock the layer - then they’ll always be on top (if you have a pic bleeding off the page or something like that). Let me know if you're still having trouble.
@@GDHT Yes adding a new layer to my master page fixed this issue for me. It was easy. Just highlighted the master layer. Went to Layers tab and clicked add new layer. Then added my text. Lock and load rock and roll. Thanks for the great video.

Fantastic tutorial, very clear and concise.
Question: like your example, I have images that cover the entire page. Only difference is, my page number shows up behind the image, so it's not seen. How do I fix this?
Thank you! You can add a layer and put the master page numbers on it, then lock the layer and make sure it's above your artwork layer - then they’ll always be on top. I hope this helps!

Hello... I saw a lot of people don't use facing pages about ebooks... are we have to use facing pages if we are on ebook? Otherwise, what would be a problem if we did the classic single page order?
Since ebooks aren't printed, there's no need for facing pages. You can use the regular single page order. :)
Great video. I'd like to know however, how do i make the first group of pages number from i to xii and than start at 1 to the end of my document.
Thanks! I have another tutorial about getting page numbering to start where you want in Indesign - it's sort of a starting point... ua-cam.com/video/qbUTJoDLRG4/v-deo.html And I was able to find this article about changing page number types mid-document: helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/layout-design-9.html Hope this helps!!
Excellent! Clear & pleasant to the ear, straight to the point. Thank you:)
Shai Zagury Thank you!!!
Thank you for this video! What if the first page with a page number starts at page 3 when it should be page 2? (The cover has no number, the table of contents has no number showing but is page 1) Thanks!
If the page numbers aren't starting in the right place, try this video: ua-cam.com/video/qbUTJoDLRG4/v-deo.html - oh whoops I just saw you already found that one.

only now understood that complexity, thank you
You're welcome!! I'm so glad it helped!!
What if the "Insert special character" function is not allowing me to insert page numbers? It is just not available to choose any of the options.
You'll need to have a text box created, with your cursor positioned inside. If you don't have a text box selected, the options will be greyed out. Let me know if this fixed the problem.
@@GDHT the options are still greyed out for me, do you know what could be the problem?
just figured it out, you have to be in text editing mode. i misunderstood the instructions
@@123456Clemente glad you were able to figure it out! :)
I need the page numbers sequentially printed on the right side (recto) of my 20 page booklet. How do I do this? Thanks
So these are just single pages (not spreads)? If so, you can just make one master page and apply it to all the pages, and add the page number like the video shows (just to the bottom right only).
A spread. Somehow, when I apply the master page on only the right side of the spread, page 2 appears as page 3.
So you want them to say 2,4,6,8? Try right clicking on page 2 in the Pages window, go to Numbering and Section Options, then Start Page numbering at 2. Let me know if that works!
I just watched your tutorial; very easy to understand and pick up. Thank you!
You're welcome! I'm glad it helped!!
Thanks for the tutorial, very clear and informative! Question: I'm wondering if you've ever come across the problem I'm experiencing: The page numbers are not lining up to where I place them on the master - for example, I have the numbering on my master placed to the outside bottom edges, just like your example, but they're showing up in the middle of the pages... I've tried deleting and re-doing them, I've tried creating a new master... same results! I can't seem to figure out why this is happening. Help!
It sounds like your master pages might be single pages and your regular pages are spreads (or vice versa). Can you make them the same and try it again?
@@GDHT Ah, yep! That did the trick! Thanks!
Great!!
Thank you for this great video, you just put an end to a nightmare for me!

Hi Great lesson... I'm designing a cover on canvas for an eBook I'm writing on a very serious topic 'Suicide' and need all the help I can get... I've always taken down notes in OneNote for quite sometime, so many at this stage that I could write a whole book on just the prologue, and so it difficult to pick from all these notes for a starting point!... I will have a Prologue and a Forward... I will download your eBook Template and follow through, But may I ask your advice on whether I should continue to edit the entire book in Canvas or use InDesign for both the eBook and hardcopy... Thank you and thanks for being on here to help people like myself. P.S. The body text... what is best?
Thank you! I've actually never heard of Canvas, but InDesign is really great for multi-page documents and ebooks. If you do decide to go with Indesign, make sure to set up paragraph styles. They're tricky but are absolutely a lifesaver!! I have a tutorial about them here: ua-cam.com/video/ZSc2s7jl630/v-deo.html
Sorry I meant “Canva”
@@gobrad Oh wow, I didn't know it was even possible to lay out an entire book with Canva. I don't think I would go that route, if I were you. I'd definitely recommend InDesign, or even Word (although I'm not a fan of Word) over Canva. But Canva is great for single images, like your cover or maybe some graphs/images in your book!
Ah thanks so much... I’ll have a listen to that!... Your way of teaching is excellent! You make it so easy to follow!...

For some reason when I go to my master page and try to move the page number up it is frozen and won't let me move it. Can you help?
It sounds like you might have locked it (OPT CMD L or ALT CTRL L to unlock). Or you might have it on another layer that's locked - that would show in your Layers panel.

Hi, How to embed a photo in InDesign. This relink error keeps appearing and I don’t want to be linked. Also, let me know if you have any group of community where we can get cleared our doubts.
Here's how to embed: First, select a file in the Links panel. Then Choose Embed Link in the Links panel menu.
Yes, we have 3 groups on Facebook -

when remove the number on the first page the second page will show page "2" is there a way to make it into page "1"?
Yes - I have another video in the top comment of this video that should help! :)
Why did you left justify the number on the right side, and vice versa? Thank you!
I wanted the number to be the same distance from the line next to it.
Meaning, if the number has 3 digits, I don’t want it to hit the little line next to it.
How do you get the numbers to run sequentially on the following pages. I have the number 1 on every single page and don't know why. Do you have any suggestions? Thank You!
Just figured it out. Not sure how, but somehow I got it straightened out.
Glad you got it figured out! :)
Thank you so much! Btw how can I put foreign language number, plz?
It looks like you'll need the ScribeDOOR plugin:
1. Put the page numbering on the master page(s)
2. Format the master page numbers to use a suitable font
3. In the ScribeDOOR panel, there’s an option for “Digits” which includes Arabic, Devanagari, Gujarati and many others.
It's also possible with the In-Tools World Tools plugin.

Hello, if I am designing a book layout and I have a cover page, some additional inside pages, copy rights, and then table of contents. How do I add the master page to page 9, but I want it begin with the number one. I hope that make sense
Here are some instructions:
Right click on the page in Pages window where you want the numbering to start.
Uncheck Allow Document Pages to Shuffle
Uncheck Allow selected spread to shuffle
Right click again and go to Numbering and Section options
Choose Start page numbering at (fill in what number you want on that page, so1). Hit Ok.
If there's a page where you DON'T want page numbering, just pull the [None] master page on top of that page in the Pages window.
Hope this helps!!
Thank you so much you are a lifesaver !
in the whole tutorial you never put any number to the page number area. so a question raise if we put numbers will they automatically changes according to the number of the page?
No, they won't. You have to add them to a master page - see this part of the tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/CsIG1ECkW94/v-deo.html If you 'insert current page number' on the master page, it will update all the pages that the master page is applied to.

I had 16 pages on my document, and then I added 4 more pages. after the number 16, the pages started again at number 1. Is there a way to change the numbers on the new pages. I am not looking to number the pages, I am looking to change the numbers in the document... I hope you can understand me. Thank you in advance. Ignacio
I think you can double click on the page icon in the Page Panel on page 17, then in the Page Panel Menu > Numbering & Section Options…unclick 'New Section'. Let me know if that fixes it.
Hi there. Thank you for responding to my question. I double clicked on the page icon in the Page Panel on the page that I wanted it to number 17. When I went to the Page Panel Menu > Numbering & Section Option, and I could not find a 'New Section' to unclick. The new window gives me an option to "start section" and many subdivision after that; and "document chapter numbering" which it is not also what I am aiming for. Do you think I can go about it in some other way? I already got my grade but I need to know this for myself. Thank you so much for helping us all.
Great video, but when I followed your steps - the page numbers aren't showing up on the pages besides when I double-click the Master Page.
What is your master page called? Is it 'A-Master' or 'B-Master'? In your pages window, do all the pages have a little 'A' or 'B' on them? If they don't, you'll need to drag the master page with the page numbers on top of that page to apply that master page to it. Another possible issue: your page numbers are dark, and your page background is dark, so they don't show up.
@@GDHT I checked all of that, and it still wouldn't work. I created a new document, followed the same steps and it worked, so I just went from there. thanks for replying so quickly!
