Oh yeah thats why I Totally agreed with most of them, especially canada, getting an amber alert is the scariest fucking thing they sound so horrible and they play on the TV EVERY TIME it's literally so panic inducing
I think because their so common the alarm is meant to be somewhat “cheerful” to not cause panic? It’s probably not as bad when you’re used to it I guess.
The Australian one is absolutely terrifying when a wall of fire is coming towards you during bushfire season. Or when a cyclone is nearby. It’s honestly so traumatic.
A lot of these probably aren’t that scary because it’s not helpful for an alarm to be too scary in emergencies. For locals though, it’s the sound *paired with context* that makes it so anxiety-inducing. I’m from Japan, and I genuinely felt uneasy hearing that sound in this video.
I'm Israeli and once had that play as a test run (everyone knew but me because I'm an immigrant) my whole family was out of the house so I was trying to force my cats into the saferoom while I was crying hysterically and that terrifying sound played in the background.
Japan's is made that way so it wouldn't be panic inducing but you'd know to get going. Italy's I'd start a rave 💀 America's is the most ear grating of them all IMO.
@@sirlame5336 damn chill, people can have opinions as long as it ain’t hurting anyone Also I don’t think this commenter would _need_ to put the effort into listing *every* single alarm on the list
I actually think that the Japanese alarm is one of the creepiest ones because it's like a happy little tune while something bad happens. Imagine and apocalypse starts and then just: bring bring :) bring bring :) bring bring :) bring bring :)
the fact that it has a little trace of that terror in it too... it's like a lil robot bell guy saying "uhhhh i hate to trouble you, but i got bad news" on repeat
As a Canadian (from Quebec), I have only heard our alarm a few times, normally in the context of amber alerts and extreme weather warnings. But it definitely gets you out of bed and over to whatever device you have to get more information. You get kind of used to it but the frequency just wakes up your whole body lol
makes me giggle a bit because it looked like nick couldn't remember what the Australian flag looked like and had to go back to tell the difference between the 2
The US one has actually always been really fucking scary for me. Im not sure if it’s because its grainy or if its the frequency but it’s always been very jarring for me.
yeah like every time i hear it on the radio, the announcers talking about the alert afterward are so quiet and grainy so you have to really listen closely to figure out what's wrong :( don't like that lol
As a German, i can tell you that that is NOT our EAS siren. Ours actually sound like air raid sirens, so much more scary. I have no idea what that siren in the video was supposed to be.
Thr reason the Japanese one is so peaceful is so kids remain calm in case of an incoming tsunami for easier evacuation since trying to evacuate kids who just got scared the crap out of is a very hard thing to do.
The Japanese one is only for earthquakes, and I believe it’s so uh.. nice- to not make people panic. Earthquakes are very much frequent and the last thing they want is people running and getting themselves hurt trying to get to shelter
At most, you have 10 seconds between the sound of the alarm and the occurrence of an earthquake. Even if you are in a hurry, you cannot go to the shelter. (In the first place, Japanese buildings are designed not to be destroyed by an earthquake, so it is safest not to leave your house.)
Thing about the cute little Japanese one is it normally proceeds something legit scary (large earthquake or tsunami... or both) so that kinda makes the alarm scary in itself. Its one that you are probably more likely to actually hear so it kind of makes sense it doesn't sound like the end of times.
This is a really interesting example of how where we grow up influences our emotions. I can see how all of these are scary or anxiety inducing because of the context even if they don't sound "scary" on a personal level.
this was the comment i have been looking for! throughout the video i was imagining it playing in a real world situation, so all of them felt either unnerving or surprising to me
@@gingertwerk472 Right, but I actually don’t find the US one scary at all because it only plays for snowstorms where I live. We get a lot of snow here but it isn’t usually too serious. So it really depends on where you live, even in the same country.
as an Australian I can tell you they cut off the end of the alarm, it typically says 'evacute' or 'lockdown' depending on which situation a few times, it's the ones they use in schools primarily
I feel like this on is used for bushfire. There is another alarm for buildings where it starts like the Swedish alarm but then goes " *whooop whoop* Emergency! *Whoop whoop* evacuate now! "
As a Norwegian, hearing those trumpets blare once or twice a year is is startling to say the least. We getused to it, but i cant imagine hearing them as an actual emergency is happening. Its a distant end-of-the-world sound for sure
Imagine rangking the greek one by "how musically interesting" when it sounds like that "the submarine is in danger!!!!!" kind of sound effect from american movies.
funfact! every first monday of the month, the dutch have scheduled their alarm to go off in the middle of the day to test if it still works for real emergencies. it's terrifying but you get used to it.
Some of these give me major dystopian vibes. Imagine walking out of you’re home to a destroyed city, buildings on fire, people running, and hearing, like, the Chinese alarm. Crazy scary.
The worst is when you're woken up by it on your phone, you turn it off, then 2 minutes later its going again because they had to make a correction (that may just be my province tho our provincial government where I am is... filled with not the brightest bulbs ngl lol)
The german one is false, the alarm is wailing sirens that get gradually louder, reach a peak and slowly become silent and repeat. It's similar to the air raid sound
Finally something we can be proud of 😭 We're not just beaches and deadly animals. We're also rocking with a scary as shit alert sound (that I've never heard irl in 25 years tbh)
Also, story about the alarm... last week, Wednesday, we had a fire drill at school (first of the year) and when it started... there was an old lady walking with a toddler... just walking by the school as it started.... she was probably so confused... its hilarious...
The Japanese one doesn't sound so scary until you get woken up in the middle of the night by it. Those panicked few seconds where you think 'is that my phone alarm??' to then realising 'OH EARTHQUAKE OH NO' and you have to run for cover are genuinely terrifying lmao
how bad ya'lls earthquakes? i was right on a fault line in california and earthquakes were so common we weren't alerted and it was just business as usual
@@scarletbailey6086 honestly I'm not sure- i only ever got alerts for amber alerts. never in my life have i been alerted to an earthquake. they just happened and i was like "huh, fun" and went about my day haha
I might be in the minority here but Japan's alarm is fucking terrifying to me. The juxtaposition of the lighthearted chimes and the terrifying chords, especially considering the context makes that one of the scariest for me
We usually hear it for Amber Alerts but from time to time you'll get a tornado warning on it too. If you hear it as a tornado warning, you run to shelter, because they don't like using it unless they're very sure. Amber alerts are free game though, and can sometimes go off 4 times for the same kid. Ie, once for French and English and then when the child was found, in French and English. Also sometimes you get a provincial alert and then a city alert. Thing is that boomers hate it so much they tie up 911 trying to complain that their phone went off. 😂
@@hideakisorachi3953 yeah, for the American alarm ( I'm American obv ) it catches my attention because I wanna know if I need to take shelter. like if I'm in the kitchen I'll give myself fuckin whiplash to look at the TV.
For context Canadian alarms will force full volume on every single phone with a SIM card and power (the SIM doesn’t need to be in service just intact and in the phone). It happens frequently for things like amber alters and severe weather. It also often triggers in the middle of the night or very early in the morning. I don’t really think the recording of the Canadian alarm actually did it justice it felt a bit flat when it’s incredibly piercing. Despite hearing it almost once a month for my entire adult life I’m not used to it; It still strikes fear into me.
No it won’t force it if you have do not disturb on, as well as your ringer off I know from experience because I absolutely hate the eas and turn on do not disturb at night so I never have to hear it at night Lmfao
I live in Canada, and where I live there are a lot of forest fires coming in season, where I am we are in a forest fire alert. I have been hearing that EA sound every day so far. It is very terrifying, especially at night! A few times were in the car, It scared me so bad I thought I was gonna have a heart attack. It's like very quiet then out of nowhere that loud sound comes on. It is a jump scare for sure, and many Canadians will agree
I love how arrhythmic the ones that have a rhythm to them can be, like they are causing you musical discomfort, just like the extreme dissonance in some of the sirens (which Norway nails). They make the notes or rhythms uncomfortable to listen to, because your brain wants harmony and rhythm. The German one repeats the last 2 notes too many times and made me notice that.
UK here, I've never heard that alarm before (Though I think the government are trialing something similar for mobile alerts now), but for things like flood warnings, a lot of towns still use air raid sirens which are really haunting.
A Canadian here. Our eas actually put the fear of god in me as a kid. I remember being happy and playing with my dolls and watching cartoons . And then that shit intrupts my show. I still have flashbacks when it comes on for amber alerts and stuff
I'm from Canada and that alarm is creepy when everyone's phones start going off with it (normally I've been at work when I hear it). Normally they do it for really severe weather warnings or occasionally amber alerts, if not just for testing.
As a Taiwanese, this is the last thing we wanna hear at school. We'll just be trembling and freaking out while immediately hiding under our table. The scarceness is so huge that I can't even feel the earthquake.
I remember that there was a day in Germany where they tried to test our alarm system all across the country. They tried to figure out if the sirens were still in tact and stuff and they failed miserably. Not even half of the sirens went off because they are all over 30 years old.
I love how Nick and Riley expected something scary from Germany and instead started vibing to it My dad is German and said the alarm scared him as a kid but agreed it definitely wasn't intimidating to him anymore My dad said that he remembers something different though, I looked it up and it looks like the one they heard in this video is fake
The Japanese EAS alert sound was composed by Ifukube Toru, a relative of Godzilla's composer, and is designed to alert people by using dissonant and rapidly changing pitches. *Translated by DeepL
The American EAS alarm is really creepy when paired with the message on your TV screen. On its own, it is pretty spooky, but paired with a blank blue background and white text telling you about a tornado is just plain scary.
as another mexican i agree, hearing that shit never fails to make tremble or even have an anxiety attack- but i’ve seen a lot of foreigners, specially gringos, laugh at it or dance to it 💀
4:46 I was in Japan for a job That sound went right off after the earthquake hit When North Korea plays with their bombs near Japan. Then you hear air raid siren
As a mexican i can tell that sound makes everyone run, cry or heartbeat to get faster, the earthquake that happened in 2017 is still so fresh in our memories that we put more attention if we hear it or any similar sound. Many people get more scared from the alarm than from the real earthquake, also nowadays it has a voice that says "alerta sísmica".
I love that Nick immediately thought the South Korea alarm sounded like a fax machine. That is absolutely the sound of AOL dialup at 2am when you're hoping not to wake your whole fam up because you're not supposed to be online that late.
It's been 12 days of Russian full-scale war against Ukraine. We hear the sirens 15-20 times a day and everything is getting bombed around. This sound gives me so much PTSD I can't wait for the war to finish so I can never hear that sound again...
The thing is, I'm from Greece and I don't think I've heard this alarm before. It's usually a very much scarier you're gonna die in 3 2 1 kinda sound, 10/10 super effective
@@irenem7410 btw what you’re talking about is the civil protection alarm. The EAS i think is for much worse situations, like… an air raid or smth. Covid alarms aren’t EAS alarms
as a canadian, ours is just so unsettling that i’ve always gotten so much anxiety from hearing it. they use it mainly for amber alerts when there is kidnapping or children missing.
You're like asleep and all of a sudden you wake up to hearing DRRN DRN DRN DRN Blasting from every device and then a random voice speaking after the noise
When I was a kid, whenever I was chattering teeth because of the cold here in Denmark, I would make the sound of our EAS alarm. It's funny how you guys mentioned it sounds like someone shivering, because it really does, and it's very easy to make that sound when you're actually shivering
Yeah it’s freaky but it genuinely just sounds like a train to me. I feel like I’d feel a little more scared by it than mine (Swedish one, was tested today) because of the deeper feel
the us does too! one time I had my phone hooked up to my car radio to listen to music with my brother and his friends and the eas sound came on at full blast. it was definitely alarming that's for sure!
The one from Japan is not to make people panic more then they have to. Japan is the most tectonically active country so they endure a lot of natural disasters and hazards so it has to be something not to scary so they don’t add to the fear. Also the ones that aren’t as scary become scarier when the message plays that something bad is about to happen, for instance; if there is a tsunami you hear the alarm then a person will give an announcement about what it is for and tell u to get to high land
as a ukrainian-canadian, the ukrainian one just made me really sad because of how much i’ve heard it in the videos my family members have sent us over the last few months...
Very sorry mate, I am in the same boat. My family has been in Canada for a few generations, but it still hurts seeing the home of my heritage being destroyed every day on the news...
The fact that I never heard the French alert in twenty years... Honestly the one that goes off the first Wednesday of each month is scarier but I think it was the WWII alarm and it makes more sense if this is the actual emergency alert. But yeah can't imagine living in a country with tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunami or shit...
I actually like the USA EAS alarm not because its kinda scary (grew up in texas I affiliate it with tornados and severe thunderstorm warnings) but because the way it works is actually really interesting it is the SAME Header alert system, and it works by turning on automatically and broadcasting. The first 3 Beeps are data dumps which give out a set of letters when unpacked. These letters are codes which when decoded give commands to 1. start the broadcast 2. what is being broadcasted 3. what counties or areas are being broadcasted 4. who sent out the broadcast (the government, EAS participant for testings, civil authorities like mayors, police, and fire department.) 5. purge time which is intervals when the broadcast is being broadcast like 15 minute broadcast intervals through an hour and then after that hour the broadcast is purged. 6. time of broadcast being sent out along with day since start of the year. this is repeated 3 times hence the 3 beeps the ending is called the tail which is the short 3 beeps at the thend which each send out 3 ns like NNN which signify the end of the broadcast and repeated 3 times so radios can automatically turn off and return to normal broadcasting. (the starting 3 beep meanings are not in ones are not in order cause I forgot)
Exactly this! SAME is really awesome, the sound of the data burst gets your attention RIGHT THE HELL AWAY and it also carries a ton of really important information. Plus the best-two transmission selection to reduce decoding errors. I mean sure it sounds horrible but so did handshaking on dial-up modems.
I needed the TV to sleep as a kid so when the American alarm went off id wake up in a panic, curl up in a ball, shut my eyes, plugged my ears rlly hard, and just sat there in irritated fear. Then I'd just be up all night. Def S tier imo or one lower
Okay but genuinely the scariest moment in my life was running at night by myself and the test tornado alarm goes off when I’m unknowingly about 200 feet away from it- I have never felt adrenaline and terror like that before I thought that the US was being nuked because it was so unfathomably loud
I'm from Ukraine so I have to hear air raid alarms on a daily basis. The one in the city I am living now is really unpleasant and has lots of text about walking to a bomb shelter and other precaution. It's kinda scary every time because you can die. It's different in different cities for some reason. russ¡a is a terrorist state.

I’m from Norway and I promise you, the Norwegian one is way scarier in person! My old high school have one of the sirens on the roof and they get tested twice a year. I don’t think the nuclear missile/civilian protection one is as “cheerful”
I think because their so common the alarm is meant to be somewhat “cheerful” to not cause panic? It’s probably not as bad when you’re used to it I guess.
There's something almost scarier about a cheerful or pleasant sound being used in a threatening situation
lol it reminds me of their j-pop music because most of them sound so cheerful, but then you read the lyrics and it's about suicide
The Australian one is absolutely terrifying when a wall of fire is coming towards you during bushfire season. Or when a cyclone is nearby. It’s honestly so traumatic.
☫
A lot of these probably aren’t that scary because it’s not helpful for an alarm to be too scary in emergencies.
For locals though, it’s the sound *paired with context* that makes it so anxiety-inducing. I’m from Japan, and I genuinely felt uneasy hearing that sound in this video.
I'm Israeli and once had that play as a test run (everyone knew but me because I'm an immigrant) my whole family was out of the house so I was trying to force my cats into the saferoom while I was crying hysterically and that terrifying sound played in the background.

Thr reason the Japanese one is so peaceful is so kids remain calm in case of an incoming tsunami for easier evacuation since trying to evacuate kids who just got scared the crap out of is a very hard thing to do.
Yeah I can see that. I'm american and I remember the panic and chaos of trying to do a fire drill even in high school
Japan really thought about the people, unlike other Emergency Alerts LOL! 😂
The Japanese one is only for earthquakes, and I believe it’s so uh.. nice- to not make people panic. Earthquakes are very much frequent and the last thing they want is people running and getting themselves hurt trying to get to shelter
they have another one used when north korea 🇰🇵 launched a missile

I love how arrhythmic the ones that have a rhythm to them can be, like they are causing you musical discomfort, just like the extreme dissonance in some of the sirens (which Norway nails). They make the notes or rhythms uncomfortable to listen to, because your brain wants harmony and rhythm. The German one repeats the last 2 notes too many times and made me notice that.
ong sirens that are slightly offbeat or weird tones are probably one of the worst

I actually like the USA EAS alarm not because its kinda scary (grew up in texas I affiliate it with tornados and severe thunderstorm warnings)
but because the way it works is actually really interesting
it is the SAME Header alert system, and it works by turning on automatically and broadcasting. 6. time of broadcast being sent out along with day since start of the year. this is repeated 3 times hence the 3 beeps
the ending is called the tail which is the short 3 beeps at the thend which each send out 3 ns like NNN which signify the end of the broadcast and repeated 3 times so radios can automatically turn off and return to normal broadcasting. (the starting 3 beep meanings are not in ones are not in order cause I forgot)
this is really cool!!
Exactly this! SAME is really awesome, the sound of the data burst gets your attention RIGHT THE HELL AWAY and it also carries a ton of really important information. Plus the best-two transmission selection to reduce decoding errors.
I mean sure it sounds horrible but so did handshaking on dial-up modems.

i’m canadian and where i live there’s a lot of kidnappings, so i hear this sound probably around every 3-5 months, i’m a bit used to it but when i’m in school and there’s an amber alert and that’s the only thing you hear, it’s scary
Yeah, my immediate thought was, "Oh the amber alert sound." It's just a general EAS noise but kidnappings happen so commonly here that I automatically associate it with an amber alert/assume that's what it is every time it comes through my phone... Never not terrifying.
@@bean6567 Same I don't think I've ever had an alert on my phone for something other than an amber alert, it's strange how often we get amber alerts, once there was like 4 in one day. all for different people.
@@yourlocalmars3676 if you check the last names they often match up. It's all crazy parents stealing the kids from the other parent. Figure your shit out seperated parents! you are giving us all trauma! lol
I'm in Ontario and a lot of the kidnappings are by family members from a custody battle, and they usually get resolved fast. I always check the alert though
@@crispykalechips Same, thankfully the cases I get alerts for are resolved quickly and safely more often than not, but it's never not anxiety-inducing.
Was looking for something soothing to fall asleep to. Thanks nick!
That is not going to go well LMFAOAOO
That is not a good idea lol, you’re gonna make yourself anxious, especially if alarms trigger you
Imagine waking up to the more scarier sounding sirens lmao
I respect it but w h a t
nickisnotgreen is my favourite asmr channel 😆
I fell asleep watching this 3 times. I just woke up for the day and watched it again lol
the canadian eas alarm playing out of everyone’s phone in class at the same time always had me stressed tf out
Actual polish siren is slower, more stretched out, this one sounded goofy 💀
Goofy ahh siren 💀☠
Sounds similar to Malaysian 👍
the italian eas alarm goes hard as hell for no reason
EDIT: NEVERMIND GERMANY FUCKS
Italy one is fake
We don't have an eas alarm
I may be biased as a Canadian, but you haven’t known fear until you’ve been falling asleep listening to ambience and then they hit you with the amber alert
As a Japanese person the alarm makes me go "earthquake!" lol. I agree the alarm isn't very scary, but it takes you by surprise when it suddenly starts playing at full volume.
I grew up in germany and I've never heard an alarm in my life, a couple months ago I moved to the netherlands and I nearly got a heart attack when I heard their alarm for the first time, turns out they just test it every first sunday of the month 💀
every first monday actually! at 12:00 to be exact :) everyone jokes ab it when it happens lmao
ab und zu werden sie getestet, aber sehr selten. ich kann mich nur an zwei tests erinnern und bin 18
If I heard Lithuania EAS I would SHIT.
Honestly the Japan EAS is kinda creepy in how minimal it is and has a vaguely ominous “creepy doll music box” feeling.
Sounds less “disaster is coming” and more “some creep wearing a jester suit and facepaint has broken into your house”
As a Canadian I can promise you waking up to the alarm is brutal. Really puts you on edge
I’m from Norway and I promise you, the Norwegian one is way scarier in person! My old high school have one of the sirens on the roof and they get tested twice a year. It’s super loud and the way it echoes throughout town is terrifying as hell; especially if the alarm comes from the roof of the building you’re in💀💀
my school was the same, a classmate almost shit themselves last time they got tested
As a American it sounds absolutely terrifying. I feel like I'm going to die no matter what I do.
@@AnagramMK7 I am gonna film when it happens because it'll last for 10 minutes. Though..it has already passed now. So I'll have to wait half a year to be freaked out of my mind. Everytime I hear the alarm I never get used to it. I always believe we are under attack.
Oh no, it gave me shivers even from this video
32:01 sounds like when u forget to put ur seatbelt on and ur car is beeping
The Japanese one is SO LOUD whether on your phone or on TV and still makes me flinch even though I haven't lived there since 2019
The Norwegian one sounds straight out of a scene in a horror movie where the main character is about to get jumpscared-
Kinda sounds like the purge alarm
The Japanese tsunami alarm is far more horrifying. It sounds like an old landline telephone ring but from hell.
I once had a shooting alarm in my school. It was just this woman's voice telling us to lock the door and not go outside until police tells us to. A few students had just gone to the toilette and we didn't see them until after everyone was evacuated. You also couldn't lock the bathroom door. It didn't have locks at the time.
We were so scared and my mother as well. She was working at her job at the time (rehab clinic for people with bodily injuries) and got a call that the hospital had to transport patients over because there was a shooting going on at her daughter's school.
You just don't know how scary a calm voice telling you to barricade yourself, can be. I couldn't look at that room the same way after that. It just remains in your head.
the us one as an american is pretty freaky but tbh doesn’t scare me as much as getting an amber alert on my phone
omg yes. amber alerts scare the shit out of me
Same
If you're in tornado area, it's terrifying
Same omg one time I was camping with a bunch of friends and all of our phones went off with an amber alert in the middle of the night it was terrifying
11:59 “how do you think they made this sound?”
They tried connecting to zhe internet while someone was on the phone
Japan’s sounds so friendly-
I’d never guess it was an EAS alarm
They made it like that so it doesn't scare the kids
@@goddessoffood7870 and so ppl don’t unnecessarily panic and slow others down w/ unneeded chaos
@@baototta wow wish some other countries had that some courtesy haha
i think it’s so kids don’t get to scared and so people don’t panic and can actually find safety instead of panicking
it's really scary when you experience it when an actual earthquake occurs ww
