Great to enjoy this. I got drafted into the Army in 1967, headed for walking point in the jungle. Then something wonderful happened, I got the chance to volunteer to become a U.S. Army Engineer Diver and sent to the Navy to be trained as a diver. It changed my world. I'm about to publish my memoir, "1968 - The Year of the Monkey: The Secret Order of the U.S. Army Diver in Vietnam."
I have been diving with this group for some 20 years now. It is wonderful, I never tire of it. Unfortunately I haven't been able to dive for the last few rallies due to health problems. (broken ribs and a fractured spine) I can't wait to recover and get back in the water again.
Takes me back to Commercial Dive School (PDSNY) on City Island. We worked from a barge and I remember climbing up and down a ladder in a Mk V...a real workout.
I was a pro diver for a long time. Worked part of those years in a Russian 3 bolt. I so miss being underwater. It really was kinda my own little world.
it toke a year to put a full 1945 deep diving USA navy suit together , it's on a mannequin, really cool looking in my museum,. If could dive (claustrophobia) prevents that so it's just for display. I envy the ones who can dive with these suits it would be a lot of fun. Thank you for your video.
How interesting that you own one. The y are pretty claustrophobic to try. Honestly i didn't care for it. I prefer shooting someone else inside one! I love scuba diving but with this i felt heavy and i didn't like the lack of control with someone else operating on the surface. It's an incredible experience i'm fortunate to have had. I'm glad you enjoyed the video
Hi! I'm a diver tender from Sweden, aspiring to take on diving as an apprentice. I like what you do over there! Hope you're doing fine. Oh btw.. We are using AH3 helmets :)
I grew up watching the old hard hat sponge divers down in Tarpon Springs, Florida dive for the tourists. I'm a PADI recreational diver. I would love to experience the "Old School" hard hat dive.
I used to dive in three bolted equipment. It was fun, but you need to get use to it. My deepest dive was 250’ in Black Sea. My primary gear was a rebreather. I adjusted mine for over 4 hours, but without often changing depth and inhale was a little harder than usual. Never regretted.
Hey Lawrence so to best answer your questions 1. the air in the helmet & suit can be regulated, you don't want to have too much but thats why sometimes the suit looks blown up. It's hard to move when that happens. 2.hoeses instead of tanks because you can spend a lot more time underwater. Tanks will limit time. 3. if you cut a hole in the suit that wold suck but the air pressure is positive so it will leak but no water should get into the helmet as far as i understand.
HairyViking111- I am 6'2" 260lbs. and I have dove a Japanese and American Heavy Gear. The old drysuits are pretty damn big. It isn't so much girth as it is length in this case. :) Give it a shot, a totally different way to dive...pretty cool. You can configure to breath from a tank but due to the free-flow helmets, you will use up your air pretty quickly. It takes so much support to get this stuff together you might as well dive supplied.
Where is this. I'm a commercial diver and have worked extensively in heavy dress. Like everyday for 8 months. I'd like to dive this gear again. I have new DESCO AH and a USDIVERS KMB 10 I still work in.
may I ask, is there any areas in canada where you can buy it? also it can be any type of diving helmet. i've been searching for one for a while now.. with no luck. maybe you can help me? thanks.

You always have to equalize when diving. Submarines and one atmosphere suits don't require equalization, but that technically isn't a dive because you are always at one atmosphere.
It would weight WAY more than you unfortunately! If you're interested in scuba diving you can do a PADI bubble maker program at 8 years old and get a Jr. Scuba Certification at 10!
Thanks for no information about why you need the heavy helmet. No information about the depth. Scuba divers go down. Thanks for explaining this all.NOT

Imagine the skill of the people who made these diving helmets and suits , incredible .

Wishing a speedy recovery!

It'd be a dream to dive in one of those MK Vs.
Last I heard DIT was still diving them. Hyperbarics International was letting students dive them as well when I attended.
totally, America is too far though, and the gear is too expensive

Fantastic peoject and experience for folks. A great tribute to your outstanding U.S. Navy and the pioneering diving they did. 🇺🇸

I want this to stick around. i've always wanted to be able to walk the ocean floor in one of these awesome suits.

The suit looks cool and creepy
It's BIGGER BOOT
Pretty cool! But I would never try it. Perhaps S.C.U.B.A. However, I once had a key chain with a diving helmet. I lost it.
Bigger boot!
may I ask, is there any areas in canada where you can buy it?

Goddammit Cookie, I want my 12!
if you need more young people I would be happy to try the hard hat diving
Do you know anyone who can fabricate a drysuit to have a flange for a diy diving helmet for shallow waters up to 5-10 meters?
I saw this from sponegbob the movie so I looked up old scuba gear and I found it 😂😂

2:58 Japanese diving suit?
Someone must have been having a painful squeeze in that suit...
No actually it's quite spacious inside the helmet
Suit, not the helmet. Diver needed to increase the airflow to relieve the squeeze in the suit.
0:21 Japanese Diving Suit?
Do you have to equalize going down
You always have to equalize when diving. Submarines and one atmosphere suits don't require equalization, but that technically isn't a dive because you are always at one atmosphere.
What is the emergency procedure ? What if you need help ?
You have communications to the service and also line pull signals.
Where is the valve for when you need to take a piss ? Or the hatch for when that curry is looking for a fast exit ?
You're doing it wrong you are not inflating the suit
