Peter, Paul, Ace, and Gene are Kiss to me, and always will be.
My first time I heard and saw kiss was kiss alive 2 album, the image of that album cover and stage shot when you opened the double album blew my mind.
I can’t count how many nights I fell asleep with that album in my hand rocking to it when I was a kid
The biggest Kiss blunder was putting Ace and Peter’s makeup on Eric and Tommy. Embarrassing.
I totally agree... No one would even care that Tommy and Eric were in the band IF they had their own make up designs .... There would be no backlash at all ...
It may have to do with all the merchandise they already produced which show those 4 original members' characters. Then again, creating totally new characters would prompt fans to buy more NEW stuff, so who knows. The guy dressed as Ace was called a "supposed replacement for Ace" and he got pisssed!😅
Agree, if they had Eric and tommy wear new makeup, or even had them wear the fox and Ankh, i woulda been cool with it.

But now that I see your full comment, you do understand :) Anyhow, my reply to your 1st sentence: I disagree because kiss could have easily still sold those items and die hard collectors would have still bought it up as well as spent more money to buy the new merch the band could have produced showing the new 4 makeups (Or whatever makeups Eric S. and Tommy T. would have worm, be it original or the fox and Ankh. It actually would have made for more merch to sell on top of still selling merch with the original 4 on it.

Much like in The Eagles, it was ultimately ego that destroys. Most bands start out on equal footing, then the "stars" develop, it goes to their head, and they start demanding a bigger piece, more control, etc. In my experience, you can't easily have a successful band if there are varying degrees of "importance". A vocalist thinks he's more important than the lead guitarist... the lead guitarist thinks he's more important than the rhythm guitarist, they all think they're more valuable than the drummer or the bassist.... then the band fractures. Look at the masters: The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin..... they never replaced someone over egos. They had their run, then disbanded, and never tried to be "the new.......". by replacing someone.
Led Zeppelin and Rush never let egos get in the way, thankfully! They were all equals.
Drummers and bass players are a dime a dozen, you can make it with hired guns for these spots

What I had heard. And Ace kind of said this too. Ace told Peter he was making twice as much as him. So Peter got mad and refused to sign a new deal unless he made more money. Paul n Gene said no.
He never made twice as much-but he DID make a little more for a while, yes.

The original four had a symmetry, and Peter and Ace seemed like far and above more accomplished musicians in the band , they never sounded the same or produced the same quality of songs after they left
During the Lost Cities tour, I took my son, who was 4 at the time, to Chapel Hill, NC, for the first show. The drum solo Peter played sounded like something off from a Disney movie.
I remember my son telling me.
>> Daddy, Pete Kitty Kitty is playing Disney.
The girl in front of us and I was puzzled about why he was playing it.
Peter could not perform at the show after ours, as his elbows were giving him issues, so the drum tech took his place.
We found out the reason Peter played that solo was because he was in pain during the entire show, so he played something simple and easy. In all honesty, it would have been best if he did not do the solo to being with, but Peter would always say that it was his time to have to himself on stage without the others out there with him. So he played a drum solo that sounded like a kiddy movie theme instead of doing the right thing.
I am truly surprised he lasted as long as he did.
So, there is reason behind this information, if it is indeed true that they said it.
Well said Peter! I was an athlete in my 20s and 30s - being a full time athlete you are always carrying an injury. You treat it preform and treat it again. It is the only way.

When kiss came out I enjoyed them when they got rid Peter and ace it was not Kiss
It was KISS. Paul and Gene did by far most of the work in the 70's. Not much changed after Ace quit and Peter was fired. They ended up being replaced by better musicians and bandmates and people

57 year old stroke having former drummer myself, I worshipped Peter & was lucky enough to catch my childhood obsession live on the Dynasty tour, shortly before he crushed my soul & left KISS. As a grown man, I will always love & respect Peter for what he gave KISS fans worldwide, especially me. That said, I belive what the other guys say about his time in KISS, cause its still excuse after excuse, same as when he got his wish the first round. Sooo, why didn't you play on so GD many KISS albums, Mr rockstar millionaire dream catcher Sir? Tummy ache? Room to cold? Fair enough. But what about group photos of you in flats, or live photos with half your makeup missing Mr semi talented / lucky af ? Feet hurting at that shoot, & eyes burning at that show? Ok then, sounds legit. lol Eddy Trunk's best work was when he produced the band ICON, while his worst work is his softball interviews of his rock idols - full stop
Tommy was the founder of the top KISS tribute group in LA / Hollywood back in the day called " Cold Gin " You can still see them here on UA-cam !!! Also Eric was a well known Gunslinger on the drums playing for many top artists such as Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Lita Ford, Badlands, Brian May and Gary Moore as well as his own band ESP ... Not to mention Eric has always been a super nice guy to everyone !

The problem I hear are the words contracts and attorneys. I understand, at some point, you have to treat a band as a business, but if you need lawyers and managers to communicate with each other, your band is already fucked.
I discovered a new song, new as in I had never noticed it before, by Peter that I really like, Blue Moon Over Brooklyn. I'm surprised it's not a bigger song than it is.

They haven't "thrived". They were irrelevant and almost broke and busted during a lot of the unmasked period. They copied every fad they could to try and keep up with everyone else in the industry until the reunion tour. Ace and Peter revived kiss and then Paul and gene dressed two imposters up and made kiss a tribute band because that's where the money is, that's all they're interested in, money.

Love the originals. But too much bullshit with Ace and Peter. Though I agree, shouldn’t have put the makeup on Eric and Tommy. However, before Paul lost his voice? Those guys were awesome. At the end, the farewell with Peter and Ace was terrible. Drums were terrible. Ace was back to being Ace.
Believe it or not... Peter was a beast in 2003/04 and was in his best shape ever (after Alive) its facts..

Ace and Peter got to big to young. They didn't stay focused back in the day because drinking and drugs were more important. My opinion anyway. I saw the original Kiss in 77 and Ace play in 2022. Always will be a fan.
Did he play on Kiss records, did he even play on his own solo album? What I've heard no. The wonders of showbiz....
He bitched about everything. He couldn't play the drums, they had to give him lessons and his dope was a issue. He had a issue with the hotel employees.
Ace said Peter was like a "dark cloud" over the band.His words.

I agree that the OG KISS was KISS. When Eric Carr, and Eventually Bruce Kulick, joined KISS, that was the New KISS.
They would drop the makeup, of course; but Eric and Vinny had their own makeup... they didn't barrow Peter's and Ace's personas.
I really felt it was a slap in the face to Peter and Ace that Tommy and Eric Singer didn't get their own KISS personas, but reused Peter's and Ace's. It was wrong, and Paul and Gene know it.
Although, I'm probably not the most authoritative KISS fan... my 2 favorite KISS albums are Music from the Elder, and Ace's Solo Album. I also own Revenge, but only for Eric Carr's Jam track at the end of it.
paul and gene found out they could do it without ace and peter and they didn't want to bring them back and split things evenly even though it was the right thing to do (if ace and peter were up to it)... i think they could have been up to it....

I do agree that if it's a new Kiss, quit playing the Alive 1 setlist, drop the makeup. At the same time, this wasn't a huge surprise. If you read Peter's book, to hear him say he's not a complainer is just a false statement. His whole book is a whine fest. I didn't get this, I didn't get that. They had to hire a limo to take him to a bar gig because he needed to feel important. He isn't the greatest drummer,and humility was lost on him. Paul and Gene stayed hungry even after the money train rolled in. Ace and Peter got comfortable and stopped progressing. I love them both, but in my mind, Kiss stopped at Unmasked. It's been a new band ever since, and they should have branded it as such. I remember watching Mtv the day they took the makeup off. I felt duped that 2 guys were impostors.

kiss makeup was trademark to band.
I didn't like that they used Tommy and Eric. But it wasn't a new kiss because they had them emulate Peter and Aces solos. They were just caricatures of Ace and Peter. Did they really put pick ups in peters drums so they would sound bigger when he hit them because he couldn't hit them as hard? I just wish Ace would've got clean a lot sooner so I could've stayed in the band. I saw Jason Peter on their solo tour and 95 and wish they would get back together and they ended up doing just that. The psycho Circus show at dodger Stadium is still the best concert I've ever been to. Also Paul is a liberal and Gene is a conservative which is why they haven't talked much in a long time.

..Peter had too many personal 'problems' to keep up, physically, psychologically, and health wise, (drugs may have been an issue, as well, or perhaps the "Whole" Problem with him.)
Didn’t Peter roll the dice by taking a payout when Kiss was at its nadir. He didn’t see a future in Kiss so he simply took a wad of cash instead of forging through the hard times. Paul and Gene risked everything and took ownership of Kiss-and it paid off keeping Kiss going for another three decades!
P&G couldn't have cared less as long the cash till kept getting filled. Bringing back A&P was just a vehicle for them to reestablish a then floundering makeup-less/identity-less band and start selling tickets again. Once that reunion audience momentum (with makeup) was established they brought in the scrubs to finish the deal. Without A&P they wouldn't have been able to reestablish the makeup era and institute the hired gun cruise control they've been riding now for 20+ years..

We are going to have NEW KISS. Yes, they will look like old Kiss, they will dress like old Kiss, they will play the songs from old Kiss. The difference is with new Kiss we control everything and we can pay them less, that's new Kiss.
Unfortunately its natural. You put 4 people in a band who are motivated by money in some form and all have massive ego's and its going to blow up. There's just no way it wouldn't in that situation so ultimately its really no ones fault as its just one of those things that happens. How each member handled it though is a different story

@@brianstrutter1501 while I agree that Paul and Gene started the group Ace and Peter made up the core members of the band. They were right there with Paul and Gene paying their dues. They were there from the beginning. They created the personas. Yes, there were problematic moments in the past , and Paul and Gene managed to keep the band alive in a different direction, but you still can’t take that away from them. I totally get your argument (you’ve had a few retorts to some of these comments) , but then take the makeup and costumes off and perform the songs without it. Because it just comes off like a cash grab and they’re only delivering half the goods.

It is insulting that any new band member would wear Peter or Ace’s makeup. It’s bull$hit. They aren’t Peter and they aren’t Ace.
Peter did not have the chops to play any of the songs with double bass or semi complicated fills. Eric Carr and Eric Singer were far superior drummers. Peter was my first drumming influence and I respect the work that he did.
Paul Stanley hasn't had the 'chops' to sing in KISS for 15 years! Didn't stop him from foisting his hoarseness and fakery on the fans..

When it comes to KISS, and Gene and Paul, it’s down to money. They wanted all of the money, and contracted “younger” talent because they didn’t pay them as much. The original four it was split four ways, new kiss it was split two ways, and even then they argued over money.
Peter Criss relinquished his rights to his makeup when he left the band in 2004, which he later claims he was pissed at himself for letting his trademark makeup slip through his hands ! Ace often claims he licensed his design to the band, but Stanley said that's a false story. Paul Stanley said that Ace Frehley and Peter Criss cut a cheap deal over their trademark makeup because they didn’t understand its value. Tommy and Eric wear the Spaceman and Catman designs after the original members handed over the rights. Peter and Ace basically sold it off for pennies on the dollar because they didn’t think it was worth anything. None of them had any idea how huge the reunion in make-up would become ... In the end it turned out to become a billion dollar windfall !!!
