Hello Sean, but don't you think that regardless of the closed/not closed season dilemma (I have no clue about the open/closed season in the Netherlands), when you start catching fish that are so fat (full of eggs) in this period and hence truly ready to spawn, that you should just pack up, and go home? These fish deserve to concentrate on their spawning in peace. Catching (and handling) them now will only stress them out and probably compromise their eggs and therefore future of the species. What do you think about this? Tight lines
Hi! I understand the reason behind what you are saying. One of the reasons why we have a closed season and also one of the reasons why I think it should change. I would rather see the closed season in a month like august, when temperatures are usually too high and it is far less likely that people will stop fishing for them due to lack of education. Stop fishing for them pre-spawn, has a few issues from my point of view: - Where do you draw the line? February? January? Because in those months they can be just as fat and stress levels won't be different. - When they are actually spawning, they are not feeding. So back to my first point, where do you draw the line? I think the heat does more damage to them, as stress will be even higher and it's harder to recover for them. In all honesty, we got a great pike population with how the rules are today, with everyone fishing for them while they are fat. So all arguments aside, we are discussing a topic on how we could make it even better. Which is good, especially in an open and respectful way! :D
Fish are full of eggs in nov,dec,jan,feb,march. You want to ban fishing in all of those months ? In general fish will not feed when they are actively spawning. The most damage is done in summer when fish have no energy remaining at the end of the fight.

In Canada (one place I went to many years ago), they used a "fish cradle" to handle large pike so they never left the water. The theory being that using their gill area to hold the weight of the fish and just touching them can cause damage and stress the fish.
Nice vid gents! The shallows one my waters are mostly very flat. Do you fish them random while fishing lots of water, or have you collected some shallow hotspots last few years and fish them very secure? Rules about closed season are very clear, only one weekend left 😎🤞

Hi Albin, normally either on the shallow spawning areas or the deep edges close to them. I usually fish the shallows, then the edge and if that doesnt produce, the deeper area ✌️

love your videos, watching from the US. I only fish muskies, but love seeing the big euro pike. I noticed your comment about fluoro leaders, if you are using glide baits which i see in this video you are a decent amount you will get much better action with steel leaders, and also not risk the chance of a true giant cutting thru your fluoro. It is rare but happens, occurs with musky guys too much because they refuse to use anything but fluoro, when steel leaders give better action on any kind of jerkbait. Straight retrieve fluoro is better
Yes, steel or titanium can be better. But the thicker the fluoro, the stiffer it gets and than the benefits of steel or titanium are getting smaller and smaller. I used titanium for quite some time but started to distrust it as it just snaps out of nothing after using it for a period of time. Running multiple rod setups in my boat, it is hard to keep track and in 3 years of heavy FC use and more pike than I can count I havent had a single snap with FC... I know, I was sceptical at first too but with 1.2mm it is so easy to work with, stiff AND you can see when it needs to be replaced instead of steel or titanium. So ye, thats why I am fishing with FC even though steel might have a slight advantage in stiffness (and thus jerkbait action)

Wooowwww, I find it very interesting that Netherlands pike spawn at that temp . Compared to Wisconsin pike that spawn right after ice out at 35 degrees Fahrenheit
Yes in Sweden, which is more north like Wisconsin, they spawn at lower temperatures also. I think it is a mix of sunlight, temperature and length of days.
Should invest in a cradle..... Holding big pike vertically for weighing or even handling is really hard on them. I watched your dasland video. Good stuff but these fish should be cradled and only held for a quick picture and immediately put back.

Hi Peter, I use fluoro because its easy to work with and it is clear when it needs to be replaced. Titanium suddenly snaps when it wears down, harder to craft a leader with and more expensive

Om vervolgens te fistbumpen na een vangst. Zoals deze video toont is het onrealistisch om 1.5 afstand te houden in een boot. En in de woorden van Lubach: "1.5 meter afstand is minder doden. Minder dan 1.5 afstand is meer doden."

You need bigger hooks on the glide baits when you are missing a lot of fish. Try a short shank Mustad 5/0.
2/0 is usually wide enough, bigger trebles generally have a negative effect on the swimming motion

We have a number of spots that we target and based on results and conditions we adapt our tactics to fish them more efficiently ✌️

9 degrees Celsius is about 49 degrees Fahrenheit
