Spinner and weaver here: To add to and clarify your statement, kind sir: The flax plant is an ancient plant well known to such cultures as the Egyptians and Romans. It is the only source of the fibers woven into natural linen fabric, which can last a hundred years or more with proper care, growing ever softer with use. Many weights and types of fabric can be produced, depending on the loom and the skill of the weaver. Making linen fabric is very labor intensive, so only the wealthiest people wore linen garments, literally passing them down through the generations until they were no longer usable. Flax fibers can also be spun with wool fibers and woven to produce a sturdy fabric called "linsey-woolsey" or "homespun". This fabric was commonly used for less expensive clothing until modern synthetic fabrics and denim fabrics replaced it. Homespun fabric was nearly indestructible and not particularly comfortable to wear, being very stiff when new and somewhat scratchy.
