We had cocktiels when I was growing up. They did a better job at letting us know that someone had pulled into the driveway than our dogs did.

My cockatiel is the same coloring, and he was the same way when I first got him, very standoffish and he still can be from time to time. Honestly got super lucky with how easily I got him onto a pellet diet, I just sprinkled some pellets over the counter with him running around the counter and used my hand to pretend like my hand was eating them he got super curious and here we are 8 years later on a majority pellet diet.

The minute you said “ I don’t normally struggle so fricking hard with diet conversion as I did with Clyde” he laughed at you!! So I of course went back to what you said and hit replay and he once again laughed at you. I wish I would have gotten it recorded. Sorry for your struggle, our sun Conure says thanks for the laugh 😂

When converting from seeds go pellets, he starved himself. It took 2 weeks for the converting. I did 100% seed, then 90-10%, 80-20% and so on.. he did not eat. He became weak. He just staved himself 😂😂 they are so dramatic.. fast forward he’s still ok seeds 🙃

I have a cockatiel named Dino who is 27 years old. He can be a bit cranky now that he is older, but he is incredible. I have had him since he was a year old. He has never bit me, likes to dance to music, and he can say some words. He does a wolf whistle too. During my hard times, he was there for me. I'm not ready to lose him. They're incredible birds. I've had 4 already.

Seeing you cover your sleeve to have Clyde step up makes me so happy, I used to have to do this with mine and everyone told me I just needed to let him bite it out etc and that it was the wrong way to go about it. 2 years down the line I hardly ever get bitten and I never have to use my sleeve anymore! He recalls to me, knows the gave of hide and seek and even descends to me when I’m laid on the floor! Anyone out there struggling, don’t give up hope! It can take a while but it’s SO worth. He’s also the cuddliest and clingiest boy ever which sometimes can be so irritating but deep down, I love it 😂
Murphy will be 6 in May and we started this trained when he was 3, a month before he turned 4! Anyone reading this, there is hope and don’t let anyone tell you different ❤

Any species is capable of showing aggression and fear, especially when they might have a background of not being treated with respect. The good news is that with time, patience and by applying permission based training most parrots can overcome those previous fears and tendency towards aggression.

I loved my cockatiels. Had Poco, which I mated with my nieces male. Took one of the females home and mom and daughter were so loving. Instant love. She recognized my car and started loudly chirping until I went up to say hello. My 65 lbs dogs were totally freaked out by them. All they did was walk on the dog’s back and preen them. 😂😂 they hid under my hair and next thing the preening began. Immediately learned that making my index finger go forward and back meant scratching and massaging the head, helping to disguise the removal of the new feather sheaths. They loved their baths and sitting next to windows listening to birds outside. Just loved them to pieces

Wait a minute i have a few questions ok 1 what happend to his tail is it that so he can not fly because i have had a bird with that before because i do rescues and ive got a rescue like that and it was supper agressive but ended up being my best friend and goes everywhere with me BUT some thing i dont understand is why you are training and putting him out in a room before you could bond with him and he seems to aggressive to do that to early because you want training to be a good thing a good activity but he is not cooperating with you and your probably going to ruin training in the future because of it NOW other wise ik your busy with other birds but take some time to spend around him dont look at or express that he is there because bird are curious little creatures and he wants to know what you are know how old is he because that does display some figure in the test because a young bird not knowing what a "Human" is but a rescue or just a pass on will already know what a human is i do not expect you to take this advise BUT consider some things i believe you work with bigger smarter birds than cockatiels there fragile and very easy to upset i do believe you have involved yourself a bit to early
now in the car you kinda needed to put him in a cage with a cover because now ive only had this happen to me a few times but he will be afraid to go back in the car now back to involving yourself i dont know many details btw cockatiels are allways stuborn.

He reminds me so much of my Archimedes, who passed two years ago. He was such a bitchy little bird. Would not go off seed, but would occasionally nibble on broccoli slaw. Love his millet and playing on the top of his cage. Had a special distress call for when he landed on the floor(never would try flying up from the floor) and realized that there were cats down there and would want rescue. Cats just wondered what the noisy thing on the floor was. I miss him.

I'm fostering a Senegal. This "teaser" seems to be exactly my experience with Holly. She would invite you in and then nail you! For a month I sat with her for Hours and hours. I swear she was planning on how to make sure that the next strike would hurt me more than the last one! I think in my case it could have been grumpy because of diet conversion to chop and your pellets (still working on it) and fear. I let her have her way and was hands off until vet day. I had to get her in the carrier, no longer could I wait for her to decide that I'm actually pretty cool to hang out with. Shock of all shocks, I lowered her foraging tree to the ground and she said "step up" "come here" and decided to be my bestie! Now she needs her forever family to find her so she can flourish with them. I'm so excited to see this series!

I have 5 cockatiels currently and in total I’ve adopted 8 cockatiels. I’m very interested in seeing how you go about training and diet converting Cylde since every single cockatiel (or parrots in general for that matter) is different with how you train and convert them. None of my cockatiels were trained or diet converted in the same way. They all have different backgrounds, personalities and boundaries. One of my cockatiels loves being around me as much as I’ll allow and one doesn’t want me near him unless for food. Cockatiels are very popular so I’m glad you’re finally doing a series on one.

Loved feet, HATED fingers. Diet conversion (once I discovered how bad seeds were) was a huge challenge, too. But, your videos helped so much with both!! So although Clyde put you through the ringer, your wisdom helped me have a much better relationship in addition to helping me realize how bad seed diets are for birds.

About 6 months ago now, I adopted a cockatiel pair from the local parrot shelter after my companion tiel of 11+ years passed away from egg binding. I wanted to wait a bit longer than I originally did, but I needed them as much as they needed a forever home because my mental health took a big hit. Since then I've managed to get them on a healthier pellet, we're working on veggies, and both have already learned step up and spin! What I learned from BirdTricks when I went to their MC in the Twin Cities has helped so much in that.
Love you all Dave, Jamie, and Capri! 💙

This is awesome news! Looking forward to the whole series.
And I love that you don't show only the glamorous side of pet rescuing. We all have put mental limits, and birds are individuals with unique personalities.
I'm still working on establishing a relationship with my rescue Senegal, and I am struggling (like, the first few weeks I had to up my antidepressants and I still spent the days crying and feeling horrible. Mine grew in an small aviary with other birds and had little human interaction, so he is a savage.
So, of course, I would love to see a Senegal series(especially since I read they are in the top of abandoned parrots).

Hi, JamieLeigh. Mix good food in with old food that's what I had to do with my cockatiels and what do you think of mixing in a little of your pellets? I mixed those in with my cockatiels to switch them over slowly and I gave them a seed treat twice a day. Just a suggestion. It looks like who ever owned him mishandled him made him mean possibly. Thank you and you don't have to do what I said but just a suggestion. My cockatiels had bad health at 7 years of age and the vet said I had to switch to better bird food and I switched to nutriberries (I'm sure your seed is perfect) and then I switched to your pellets for years they ate your pellets just loved them!!! Love you all!! Barb, Baby spirit, Beenie spirit!🥰🥰🤗🤗🤗😘😘😘

The male tiel I had was a 'meanie', too, hissing included xD He ruined tiels for me.
I still like them though... from a distance. The white ones, like Clyde, are my favorites.

JamieLeigh, because cockatiels are small they get mishandled like any small bird would. I know Clyde will come around just give him some time. Yes their bites can be super bad and draw a lot of blood!!!

I had two different Cockatiels. Spike who flew the coop and was never seen again. Then we had Louie. He died of natural causes. I remember it was Mother's day and I found him on the bottom of his cage. They were both hand tamed when I got them. Looking forward to seeing you work with Cylde. Gina

Converting tiels to new, healthier food... good luck, I had to literally eat with my birds to convince them. Managed to do so with 6 specimens so i consider myself to be rady for anything that hell might throw at me.
Also that reminded me of how it started with me (the birb madness). In fact it was also male lutino cockatiel but with more scars, fungus, liver damage and some serious aggression problems. Probably why no one wanted to adopt him. My young dumb self thought "eh he's already about 10yo lets give him a nice last few years". And so he lived another 10 years just to spite gods. Turned into real hug bug tho.

I ended up being the caretaker of a ‘tiel. I actually can’t remember his “real” name…..we called him Dracula, cos he appeared to be rather fond of blood. This was mainly because early on we had to restrain him in a towel to clip his hugely long claws, and he got me…..but he not only got me but he hung on like a tiny avian bulldog. We had to prise his little beak open!!. We DID in the end reach an accomodation. He’d come out during his out time and was happy enough to share space with humans as long as they didn’t have the temerity to try touching him, and would happily step up onto a perch to go back when done. He’d still happily draw blood if he felt like it, but it became a less regular occurance. And I guess he wasn’t THAT bad(either that or I’m just a sucker) cos I later got a beautiful hand raised female who was TOTALLY different, loved to be handled, loved head scritches and bit I think once in her whole life. Just goes to show what early handling experiences can do to a birds nature. Sadly I was a lot younger then and I didn’t know a lot about bird training cos i think more training would have suited her, tho we did harness train her.

My tiel would act like this. (biting, pain in the butt about diet conversion etc.) but I do want to mention that this shouldn't be 100% of their behavior. My tiel started acting a lot worse at around 3 years old and I trouble shot all of my husbandry. Nothing I did worked and he began having weird behaviors. ie memory loss. I thought it was just his usual stubbornness but quickly realized it wasn't and took him to the vet (between yearly vet visits) and he was diagnosed with AVB and he passed away about 1 week after showing symptoms. My point is that if your bird is acting out and your care is providing everything they need and then some, make sure there is no underlying health issues.

My tiel is an angle! She was my first bird she goes all over with me. She is nice to everyone is happy to sit and get head scratches. She’s mostly quiet compared to other birds at least. She made me fall in love with birds so much that I got a green cheek that came from another home previously. He’s freaking crazy and made me realize I probably don’t need other birds. Very loud and always getting into trouble but I still love him. Cocktails I’m my experience are easy and very sweet coming from my experience.

Yaaaaaah!!!!!!!! Awesome! I have one that I still can’t fully convert off his seed diet. His weight also automatically drops if I remove too much of the seeds. It is Soooo annoying. He also refuses all baths in all formats. My other one eats everything and takes baths, but he tends to be quite aggressive with me, especially when I need to handle his buddy. They compliment each other well. I sometimes feel like they’re the ones training me to be their pet rather than the opposite.
