The Highest Omega-3 Dose Ever Studied (25 grams per day)

  • When Dr. Bill Harris began researching omega-3 in the early 1980s, he was looking for an impact on cholesterol with what would be considered a high dose by today's standards: around 25 effective grams per day of omega-3 from salmon. However, rather than finding an effect on cholesterol, they found a nearly 80% drop in triglycerides among patients with Fredrickson Type V hypertriglyceridemia.
    While this dose is, no doubt, clinically excessive, the tolerability of even high doses used in the past provides context on just how hard it is to determine a true "tolerable upper intake level" when it comes to omega-3. Listen for discussion of bleeding risk, omega-6 to omega-3 ratios, how the FDA set the recommended dose of prescription omega-3, and more.

    Why does he say you can't fix the ratio by lowering the intake of omega 6, when that is far more plentiful in our diet that in times past? Nearly every packaged food you buy today has some sort of seed oil in it. Upping your omega 3 to fix the ratio, doesn't remove the unnecessary intake of omega 6,

    • @FoundMyFitness
      @FoundMyFitness 2 роки тому +10

      He's highlighting the fact that there's now robust evidence showing that the content of red blood cell membranes in terms of omega-3 is reflective of either good or bad outcomes, and that you can't fix low omega-3 levels that reflect poor dietary intake (very prevalent) by reducing omega-6. Catch the full interview for more.

    • @Holdem17

      So you can fix the ratio but still have too little omega 3.. got it.

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 Рік тому +1

      The negative effects of a low ratio appears to have more to do with inadequate omega 3 intake then harmful effects specifically from omega 6 fatty acids(which themselves appear to be correlated with certain cardiovascular health markers). That doesn't mean you should actually try to eat more fried or processed foods just that omega 6 fatty acids don't appear to be harmful on their own and you shouldn't avoid generally healthy foods like avocados because they don't have that ratio.

    • @conceptualclarity
      @conceptualclarity 6 місяців тому +1

      To address Holdem's concern I point out that omega-3 and omega-6 compete for the use of certain enzymes in the body. When omega-3 is supplied in greater quantity those enzymes are used for beneficial conversion of Omega 3 fatty acids rather than being used for harmful conversions of Omega 6. This is explained in the books by Dr Barry Sears from the earlier part of the century.

But like everything in life, theres always exceptions to the rules. Some peoples bodies i have learned react completely opposite of what most peoples body reacts. So always keep that info in your calculus. This is a fact most people even pay attention to. Because its rare and the exception to the rule. So people like that are the minority. But its still a possibility that you might be the exception to the rule. Always have this in your mind when you take anything that people say will do this or that if you take. ✌️
