  • This week we're taking a look at Volvo's hot selling sporty crossover, which gets an updated powertrain lineup for 2015 to go along with last year's visual refresh. That powertrain update brings the company's new Drive-E engine family into the fold, which has a few interesting tricks up its sleeve.
    Like the S60 and V60 we tested earlier this year, when outfitted with the T6 engine as our tester here is, the 2.0-liter four cylinder mill sports both turbocharging and supercharging, bringing output to 302 horsepower and 295lb-ft of torque - impressive numbers for that amount of displacement. The T6 is hooked up to an 8-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifting and manages to score fuel economy numbers of 22mpg in the city and 30mpg on the highway, or 25 combined.
    Our Platinum-trimmed example also sports 20-inch "Titania" alloy wheels, two toned leather sport seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a price tag starting at $40,050.

      Im 22 and just had my 2016 volvo s60 totaled from a jack ass running a red light. Thinking about this suv as a replacement. I wouldn't buy a car this nice for a 15 year old as they are highly likely to damage it. Better to get a cheap car for your fist car until you get experience. Unless your parents have money to burn then whatever congratulations. You're 19 now this comment is old af lol. Hows that suv holding up?

    The twincharger engine is cool, but useless on the XC60 in Canada without AWD. (Nobody buys a SUV without AWD up here in the North)

    • @robertriley9091
      @robertriley9091 10 років тому +1

      It should be illegal to buy vehicles without AWD in places where snowfall is prominent. Night and day difference having AWD.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 10 років тому +1

      Robert Riley
      I wouldn't say that. A FWD car wearing proper winter tires would decimate an AWD car wearing all-seasons (or some say, no-season tires).
      For braking and turning, tires play more important part than AWD system. Only acceleration matters for AWD, and that's if you have proper tires on (A Subaru would still be useless in snow without proper tires)

    • @robertriley9091
      @robertriley9091 10 років тому

      Trades46 I went from a 2 wheel drive to an AWD vehicle without snow tires and drove in the snow and it drove perfectly. I saw lots of cars fly off the side of the highway plowing into the median full of snow at 60+ MPH with 2WD vehicles. If I lived up north again, I would never own a FWD or RWD only vehicle again. I'd either get a Subaru, Audi Quattro or other AWD vehicles. There's plenty to choose from now. I had a Hyundai Santa Fe that ran perfect in the snow with AWD. I never got even close to getting stuck. At the lights I would floor it and it would take off like a snowmobile while all the FWD cars next to me would sit there spinning their tires. I had regular tires and did not have snow tires. It was actually fun to drive in. My brother-in-law has an Audi S4 AWD and he can go anywhere in West Virginia with it. He had a FWD vehicle before and told me it was useless there. The only thing about the Audi is it's so expensive to fix when a lot of stuff breaks. Plus he said there's nobody who can work on that car anywhere near him. He has to drive over 50-100 miles away to an Audi dealer. All the locals think he's rich for having that car because nobody has cars like his where he lives.

      I've seen a small number of RAV4s and CR-Vs without AWD before.
      But 9 of 10 SUVs are usually equipped with AWD.

      *****
      I've owned over 20 vehicles. All the ones, even without super powerful engines that were not AWD, I hated. Every time it would rain and I would make a right turn from a dead stop trying to merge into traffic, the tires would sit there and spin. It was annoying. When I had an Audi A4 AWD, it was pouring down rain and I floored it to go across 3 lanes and making a left hand turn merging into traffic, it handled like it was on rails. Any other two-wheel drive car like a Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, etc, would have spun out and did a 180 and got into an accident driving the same way I did. I've had 5 Camaro's. Every time it rained I always had to ease off the peddles and the fun factor ended. When I was in the snow and more than 5 inches came down, it royally sucked in the Camaro. I ended up getting an AWD Santa Fe and all the problems related to snow went away 100%. I guess if you never go WOT or never drive aggressively at all, then maybe you don't need AWD so much, but every now and then there's an emergency situation and I have to floor it, I don't need the wheels roasting the tires. I need the wheels to grab and go, and that's what AWD does for me. I loved my X5. I had the one with the sport package with the 315's on the back and 275's in the front. After 8,000 miles, I not longer loved it. Those tires start making noise and you can't rotate them. They look cool, but I didn't want to be buying new tires every 10,000 miles. I tried flipping the tires on the rims making the outside go in, but that did very little. By 11,000 miles, the tires were howling.

    it sounds like a CVT, is it?

    • @killz4money
      @killz4money 10 років тому

      This is not a CVT, you can hear it shifting up and down clearly (audible jumps in the RPMs). A CVT never jumps in RPMs. CVTs also give off a characteristic whine when accelerating at full power.

    • @killz4money
      @killz4money 10 років тому

      Scott K Isn't the entire point of a CVT the fact that it doesn't shift like a conventional auto? A CVT can instead change seamlessly through an infinite number of gear ratios to allow the engine to always run at the optimal RPM.
      The moment a CVT shifts like a conventional auto, it's no longer a CVT.

    • @killz4money
      @killz4money 10 років тому

      Scott K Ah now I see, thank you for the comprehensive explanation! Well it seems stupid but if the general public isn't a fan of the trademark "droning" then they could basically make it operate like a semi-CVT. Having it "shifting" by holding on to specific gear ratios for a while, and then when the car has been moving at a constant speed for a certain time span, adjust the gear ratios so you get optimal RPMs for that speed.

      Wonderful, first the V8, then the 5-cylinder petrol, now the 6-cylinder and soon the 5-cylinder diesel will be dead and we're left with more dreary averageness. Yes they need to change the naming strategy. Looks like they're doing what Mercedes is doing and the numbers denote power levels rather than engine size (or in Volvo's case, cylinders) like they used to.

    • @ConnecticutDashcam

    It's a sad sight to see and a sad noise to hear a pathetic 4 banger in a Volvo :( At least they still have the iconic I5!

    • @lewiswhite7023
      @lewiswhite7023 10 років тому +2

      the 4 cylinders make 302 HP more then the 5 cylinders (258 HP plus better MPG)

    • @sethmasters9975
      @sethmasters9975 10 років тому +1

      Lewis White
      The 4 bangers do not produce 302 HP more than the I5. The base I5 produces 250 HP. The base Driv-E I4 produces 240 HP. The overpriced Driv-E produces 302 HP. Either way, both of those Driv-E engines' power does not matter. They are coupled to a ridiculous 8 spd. That's where you're getting your MPG. The 8 spd. is dimwitted. To actually get driving pleasure from them, you would have to keep it in sport mode...there goes the MPG. I don't want my Volvo sounding like a dreary Honda or Toyota either. The I5 defines Volvo. It is Volvo. They're known for that legendary engine. Furthermore, I would much rather drive a smoother, sportier sounding, nicer overall sounding, more genuine, and silkier I5 over a pathetic, miniscule, choppy, and dreary 4 banger. Also, I am a car enthusiast. Specifically, a Volvo enthusiast. I do not care about MPG. I do not believe in MPG. Volvo's are heavy anyway so you won't get the greatest MPG out there. You either get power or MPG. Not both. That is not Volvo due to their weight. It is one or the other. So, if Volvo truly wanted MPG, they should've ditched the Driv-E plan and went for a more economical 4 banger with less HP and a lot more MPG. But, I personally do not see them doing that. They recognize that they have an understated status of power. I believe they want to keep it that way. They have to please the US government at the same time though, which, I believe is why they introduced Driv-E in the first place. Driv-E is ear-candy. It's not actually as good as it sounds. That sums up why I strongly disagree with these 4 bangers.

    • @ConnecticutDashcam
      @ConnecticutDashcam 10 років тому +1

      seth masters Im pretty sure someone forgot to grammar. I think he meant to put a comma there so it would read "The 4 cylinders makes 302 HP, More than the 5 cylinder (meaning it makes 302, which is more than the 5 makes)

    • @sethmasters9975
      @sethmasters9975 10 років тому +1

      asdbs11 It does make more sense that way. Though, even then it is still false. It is false if we're speaking of relative engine class as well as stock modified engines. For example, the base 4 banger produces 240 HP, while the base I5 produces 250 HP. The 4 cylinder that produces 302 HP is not standard to the car. You pay extra for it. So, to back that up with an I5, I have two cars in mind. One of which is the Ford Focus RS. This model is powered by Volvo's 2.5 I5. According to Motortrend, the 2010 model year produces 305 HP. Since Ford does not sell that model of Focus here in the USA, I do not know how accurate that is. Though, that spec does ring a bell from Jeremy Clarkson's review and further mentioning of the RS. The second car is the real C30 Polestar. I say real because in the USA market, Volvo produced a limited edition model of the Polestar, though it wasn't exactly like the Polestar. The real Volvo C30 Polestar is also powered by Volvo's I5, and it produces 400 HP, which is more than the top model, fastest Driv-E engine.
