Romania's WASR10 Underfolder Returns To The Market

  • This time we take a look at an AK variant that hasn't been on the market for many years. This is the WASR10-UF in 7.62x39; manufactured in Romania by Cugir and imported into the USA by Century Arms. Currently, these are only available at Atlantic Firearms, as only a (relatively) small batch came over the pond.
    The WASR10-UF is built from all new, 2018 production parts. It features a machined underfolding buttstock, threaded barrel, and accepts all standard AK47 magazines; however, no bayonet lug for some reason?
    In this video, we compare the new WASR underfolder to the original one that was imported a decade ago, the GP-WASR10/63-UF.
    This is just a teaser preview, and we will post a full review with range footage ASAP for you all, cheers.

    I purchased a my WASR 10 UF about a month ago and I must say I like it very much. It is an ‘18 year of production.
    It came with the 2nd generation under folder.
    Out of the box it was nearly impossible to push the locking button to release the stock and almost as hard to fold the stock.
    I removed the pin on it he opposite side and backed off the nut on the pin hole and reinstalled the pin and it is now perfect.
    I was unsure of how I would like the under folding stock because it was a replacement from Century for a fixed stock WASR 10 (new production) that I sent back for issues and could not be fixed by Century and they had no WASR’s in stock to replace it so they offered me a UF, if I was interested.
    I can honestly say now I don’t regret accepting their offer.

    I love my original Wasr 10UF. It stacks rounds on top of rounds and the front sight is dead center. I even checked it with a micrometer because through the years I've had to straighten alot of my front sight blocks on my AK rifles. I have the Russian Wood palm swell handguards on mine. It's a great looking gun.

    I have a WASR-10/63 with matching 1972 serial #’s. It’s indestructible and accurate meaning it hits what I aim at every time. I also have a 2011 Romanian M-10 and it just feels like it has tighter tolerances but not sure if it will outlast the 1972 full-auto parts kit on my 10/63. Great guns both of them.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 6 років тому +1

      Actually, we did have some problems with the original WASR10/63-UF back in 2009 or so, but mostly cosmetics. That was right after the election, so Cugir was rushing guns out the door and Century was rushing to convert them. So sometimes a stinker slipped out. We had one with a magwell not opened up enough. It was so tight it was squeezing the mags, causing jams. Easy enough fix though. We had a couple others with very floppy loose folding stocks, and some with truely horrid looking handguards. Mine was one of those. It gave me several splinters, so i just put the dong HG on and its been there ever since. The palmswell HG on the new rifle? Actually, that was originally on my SAR1 way back in 2001. The stock the SAR1 came with was kind of messed up as it was undersized and fit too loosely, but the HG was always great.

    Everything else is the same from factory. I’ve got brown/red like new Bakelite grip, “cheese grater” upper handguard, and a Bakelite lower handguard that’s slightly more brown than the grip but still matches quite well.
    I did find some rust that needed to be addressed in the underfolder mechanism. Took it apart and got everything squared away.

      Ben I bought one of the JRA T56 kit builds, because I can use it for the Albanian clone I've been wanting to do. I'm going to send Turbo the rifle, an original Polytech barrel and have him swap the receiver with one of his T56 receivers and put the Albanian selector markings and install the Poly barrel. That will be a sweet gun. But in all fairness, Classic says all of their offerings are small batches. lol Think the small batch of BM 59s that they got in. (still available 2 years later). I also bought one of the BM 59s from Classic, so I am a good customer of theirs. I just have to call the small batch thing out.

    I wish Ciger would produce a Side Folder.. UF's are cool looking but not very pleasant to actually shoot.. I think a Side Folder along the lines of Arsenals now expensive and pretty much unavailable SLR-107Sf would sell like proverbial "hot cakes" if it was made available to the Us Market right now.. Great review brother.
    I like palm swell hand guards on my AKs too. I have two newer production WASRs. One has surplus AK74 furniture on it and the other has Polish WBP furniture from AoA on it.
    I had to do some fitting with the WBP furniture. The top handguard was a bit over sized and the stub from the buttstock that goes into the receiver/trunnion was over sized as well. I just widdled them down with a utility knife.
    I’d really like to get rid of one of my WASRs and pick up one of these UFs but it’s really not a seller’s market right now when it comes to used guns here in CA. I’d lose my ass.
    I think I’ll just pick up a Romy side folding stock from Apex ($140ish. Wish they were still $60ish) and call it a day.
    I’ll have a fixed stock WASR, a side folding (fixed for legal reasons here in CA) WASR and a Romy AES-10B. That’ll be the extent of my Romy AK pattern rifles for now (wife will divorce me and take the kids if I pop on that UF). I really want that UF though.
    You said your WASRs don’t have bayonet lugs? Both of mine do. The one I bought new actually came with a bayonet. The other one I bought used, didn’t.
    Well, any who. Great review. I still want that box of Chicken in a Bizkit that was playing Peek a Boo with me during the entire video 🤣

      How do you make a WASR10 into a Side Folder? Does it lock closed? IMO I would rather see them reproduce a Side Folder for import than an Under Folder.. UF's are cool to look at, but they aren't particularly nice to shoot.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840

      I said the newer WASR-UF didn't come with a bayo lug. The older WASR10/63 in this video does have the lug as does my newer fixed stock (now folder actually) WASR10. What you probably are thinking is when i said all WASRs come into the USA with the lug shaved off. Its an import thing. Century is the one who re-adds them. Yes, new condition AK wood is always made oversized so it can fit a wider range of guns. This is even the case with military sets. So no worries, yours was normal.

      What a great question, and I might steal it for a video topic someday haha. I'd probably go WASR-UF too, but it is very close. The NPAP-DF has things to recommend it too.
      For example, the NP-DF has a heavier barrel and is also cold hammer forged (but not chromelined). Personally, i think the NP-DF has a bit better fit+finish, with a nice blue job and a polished bolt group that is very smooth. Probably the biggest advantage the NP-DF has is its underfolding stock. It is AKMS pattern, so locks on both sides. Also it comes new very very tight. As I say in this video, the WASR's stock is the earlier AKS pattern and only locks on the left side. So the NP-DF's stock is stronger. I like the NP's handguards too. Yes proprietary, but longer HGs are always welcome on an AK and many companies now make Yugo/Zastava M70 patterns today. Oh and the NP-DF is about $100 cheaper than WASR-UF.
      Both have 14x1 threaded barrel, neither has a bayo lug, and both are true factory built with imported receivers and barrels. The NP-DF's receiver does have dimples and does have a (slightly) thicker trunnion. IMO: replace the recoil spring in the NPAP and you're gtg for 10k rds. With the WASR, replace the popcicle HGs and its gtg. Yep, definitely a good ivdeo idea, thanks!

      Should have waited to sell them in mid November of 2008; definitely wouldn't have lost money. Back just a few days before Sandyhook, I gave a friend $450 or so for a used WASR. It was pretty rough though not abused. It had cheesy US black handguards but did at least have a Romie side folding stock. I put it on GB for $500 starting, just hoping to get my money back as I'd bought it off him right before Christmas to help him out..gifts get expensive. Then those events happened that I'd rather not think about, and the auction ended up at nearly $1,500. Things kept on being crazy for months after that. It was a pretty depressing time.

    I always thought that the wasr 10 was a low end AK. No dimple to help hold in the mag. Not sure how the wasr looks under the hood as you put alot of rounds down range. Anyway i may be wrong might be just scuttlebutt i heard. Can anyone enlighten me? I have a few vepr's an o pap and a mak 90. How does this Romanian hold up. Thanks.

    • @1986teambeast

      Back about 10 years ago it was a bottom of the barrel ak because of the cosmetics. Now they are highly regarded as they are combloc made with chrome lined and hammer forged barrel, the same as back then but since we have found out that most American manufacturers make a horrible ak we are happy getting a combloc made ak. I would take a WASR 10 over the pap but that's personal preference and because the wasr uses all standard akm parts and the yugosdo not. If you want another ak variant the uf wasr is a great choice.

Like i said eariler i do have a o pap in my collection and i always kind of thought that the o pap was a step higher than the Romanian wasr. Only thing I've noticed on the o pap is that the charging handle sticks a little and isnt quite as smooth as the mak 90 or the Veprs. Anyway thanks for the 411.

      @ozarkbeararms8840 6 років тому +1

      Greetings, notice your VEPRs do not have magwell dimples either and no one would call them low end I think it is safe to say. The dimples are there to reinforce and strengthen the receiver stamping. Stamped steel is stronger when it is bent and curved. This is why the dustcover has ribbing too. The dimples shouldn't be making contact with the magazine body. They aren't there to stabilize it. Instead, there are internal rails and the bottom of the receiver to do this. Instead of dimples, the WASR has 2 plates welded inside the magwell area for strength. Also note that many Saigas aren't dimpled and have these plates instead. It is just a modern way of doing things, though I agree the traditional dimples are more cosmetically appealing.

      My old faithful wasr10/63UF is a joy to shoot. The way those stocks angle down is ergonomicly identical to the type 3 milled underfolders. All other stamped underfolders I've handled have the stock more parallel to the bore, and are much more difficult to get a comfortable sight picture. I wouldn't take a chance waiting, if you want one.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 6 років тому +1

      Honestly I'd not be surprised if some of the 1st pattern stocks (like on my orig WASR10/63) came from Russia. They look identical to an AKS-47 T3 stock. Yes, they have a deeper angle. Also they are rounded rather than squared off, so a more comfortable surface for your face. On and I like the spring loaded buttplate; its fun to play with hehe.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 6 років тому

      If you press your cheek/chin firmly onto the stock, it isn't too uncomfortable. The pain can come when people don't do this, so with every shot the stock jumps up a bit and slaps them in the face. Just be smart and hold the gun properly and you won't notice it...at least not unless you go for firing 500 rds in an afternoon. Now that might just start to sting a bit no matter what.
