Don't call him useless. If it weren't for this character, I wouldn't remember the series at all! I mean one doesn't forget seeing a clown riding a giant, flying, talking cat. Remembering him from the old anime helped me find this series again. Also he actually does more in the manga and his narration actually helps some folks like me, who thinks the plot in this series is way too complicated that it hurts it. (Talking about the manga. Not this anime alone.)
He is the sole reason the series even exists. His entire role is basically deterrence. I do not think he was human since he actually used the strongest paopei. I vaguely remember a couple times in which Dakki would have killed Taikoubo if it were not for Shinkohyou hanging behind her and laughing creepily as if saying he was going to zap her down if she got out of hands and made things too boring. He was the ultimate neutral character and just like Hisoka he was in there for the lolz. He is like Hisoka minus actually participating in the story and being a psychopath.

However it's mentioned that he is much stronger than most sennins and if he wishes to he could easily become one, he just opted to stay as a doushi because you need to take on a disciple in order to become a sennin. Also fun fact, in Fengshen Yianyi, the Chinese story Houshin Engi is based on, Shinkohyou (Sheng Gong Bao) is actually Taikoubou (Taigong Wang)'s junior classmate studying under Genshitendou (Yuan-Shi Tian-Zun) and plays a much more active antagonistic role in the story where he's responsible for tricking many characters into attacking Taigong Wang, ultimately after an epic battle with Taigong Wang, he was captured and houshin'd by Yuanshi Tianzun.

Seriously though, this version rushes everything so badly that it makes the 1999 version look like a masterpiece in comparison.
This is easily amongst the best manga ever made along with Hunter X Hunter, JoJo and Akame Ga Kiru. It is criminal that they got such a rushed adaptation.
@@SaitohYatate "Asexual" what? The story and the new manga covers implied he had a thing with Jyoka. In Chinese mythology, Fukki (Taikobou's real identity) is the husband of Jyokka. It made it more tragic that he had to do everything to stop his wife, even killing her.
Not to mention the sexual tension between Taikoubou and Dakki throughout the manga(especially on Dakki's end). It's the same with Dr.STONE. Senku and Koharu were hinted at frequently in the manga (and in the new Gaiden, they're openly flirting and talking about getting engaged). So yeah, neither protagonists are asexual.
The original is the manga. The 90s anime is pretty much garbage, too, for butchering the story and the characters. I read the manga first and when I watched the 90s version, I was so disappointed.
The anime unfortunately does not end the manga, we did not have a fight against Jyoka. The anime ended after the fight between Taikoubou and Bunchu. -Sorry for taking so long to respond.
despite that the new adaptation of the manga, was excellent, with a good development (and above all a ultra cool soundtrack), i think that should have better if Dakki must have been destroyed in the end of this series by Taikobo, like in the last adaptation, thus paying by all her misdeeds and crimes, but this time was not so (i must admit, that in a good series, i hate any karma houdini).
@@psnfangking1049 Well even Fukki/Oeki did some heinous stuff to those who descended from his kind. And it almost feels ultimately a hollow victory at the end, with the questions posed. Although Dakki did endanger the world with her choice, and was proven wrong that Jyoka would do the same.

manga is like top 5 best ever like HXH, JoJo and akame ga kill. Anime is just trash. Newer anime is shit. Well newer anime had 2 very epic opening but apart from that it sucked. Old anime at least tried to put a twist in the story and was completely different from manga near the end. New anime is like epic butchering of the original story

この二回目のアニメ原作に忠実なんだけど2クールでまとめる為に話端折りすぎてダメダメだったから、せめて声だけでも最初のアニメ化したときの声優陣にしてほしかった
結城比呂さんがアニメ終了後何かのラジオ番組でリスナーのリスエストで伏儀の最後のセリフ「さぁて、何処に行こうかのぉ。」を言って見せてくれた事があったけど、それがめちゃくちゃ合ってたから
今作の声優さんが悪いわけでは勿論ないけど、申公豹の石田さん、普賢の緒方さんのハマりっぷりは越えられない
