The OnePlus 3 is an amazing phone. Slick metal design, 6GB of RAM (not a typo and more than a PC in my house has), and a clean version of Android that just flies. Best of all? All of this is only $399 factory unlocked from OnePlus' site.
Now, even though it's a great phone, there is always room for improvement. One such way to improve an Android phone is to root it. If you root the OnePlus 3, you'll get access to root-only apps in the Play Store, be able to flash a custom recovery and even flash custom ROMs (think new versions of Android with custom skins, performance tweaks, etc.).
Thanks to OnePlus' own lax attitude towards rooting (this is a company that used to use Cyanogen, master of rooting, on their devices), it's pretty easy to do and easy to undo as well. Here's how to root the OnePlus 3.

I was very nervous about rooting my new OnePlus 3 but having a technical background, I knew the risk was worth it. Your tutorial was perfect and my phone is now rooted. Now I have to decide which custom ROM to use. Thanks very much for your easy to understand video.

omg yesss ..my phone got rooted .i nearly lost hope when the cmd said "devices not found" after i wiped out my phone data but then i just reinstalled adb and tried it out again and was successful. well anyway thx u soo much the Unlockr
I'm having a problem with the "fastboot oem unlock" part. Everything else is going fine, but as soon as i put in the command, it just says "< waiting for device >" forever. My phone just stays at the fastboot menu. I NEED HELP!

Hey David, I'm a subscriber since your "how to root the oneplus 2" and how to get cyanogen into it. It worked amazingly, but as cyanogen is not official on the OP2 the google apps don't come in it, could you please do a tutorial on how to install them, please?? 😀
I was having a problem where I couldn't reboot with the recovery.img file. It seems that the recovery.img file provided doesn't work with my phone. This would cause my phone to boot into a blackscreen without anything happening.
So in order to fix this, I googled for the latest op3 twrp recovery file. The first link should be the official website from which you can download the file. This file should be named something longer than just recovery.img; something like twrp-3.1.0-0-oneplus3.img. Do the same that you did with the previous recovery file and move it into the adb folder and rename it to recovery.img (delete the previous file in this process). Once this is done plug your phone in the pc while it's on and go into the same command prompt mentioned in the vid then type:
adb reboot bootloader
adb erase recovery
adb flash recovery recovery.img
From this point on, my problem went away and my phone booted to the twrp ui. Hope this helped someone.

After reaching the "recovery" part of the tutorial, my phone stopped working, it is now just a black screen.
I don't see why you would root the OnePlus 3 except changing the boot animation.
+JackPlaysOfficial CyanogenMod comes to mind :) or just other cool ROMs. But I know what you mean, it's a pretty stock experience thankfully and doesn't need it, but it's so easy to do and undo something to try if you want to tinker

Hi, I did step by stept till minute 5:40. From there when I want to enter in recovery meniu, is not allow me but is bring me in a windows where :

after you root your device so your date lost or not ?
need some help. can get recovery mode on. it keeps sending me to were i can only wipe data and cache, the one plus logo shows. Any thoughts why this happend?

I got to the TWRP part and it wouldnt backup and then couldnt find supersu in the files anywhere because all of the folders were blank

the command
flash recovery filename.img
must also specify its path location not just the name of the file
and I solved it

so i was about two thirds of the way trough the process of unlocking my oneplus 3 when I clicked on your custom recovery link to find it wasn't operational.... shit
my device did not fastboot its an andriod 7.0

well I unlocked the device and root it then i unroot it cuz i couldn't use snapchat we, now i am thinking of root it again so it's already unlocked well it erase everything again ?? and do you have any solution for snapchat uses when rooting?
Azoz Gh unroot, sign into Snapchat, root again then should be good to go. Just stay signed into Snapchat once you've rooted though or you'll have to go through the process again
