Matschie’s tree kangaroo is found in only one place on the planet: Papua New Guinea’s Huon Peninsula. Living in these remote cloud forests, it has evolved to climb trees, eat leaves, and stay camouflaged in the canopy. With only around 2,500 individuals left, Matschie’s tree kangaroos are endangered. But there is hope: Woodland Park Zoo’s innovative Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program is protecting the marsupials’ native habitat with the help of local communities. Learn about this elusive species and take a look at PNG’s first conservation area, where protecting local wildlife involves a holistic approach.
👉🏽 Bringing together wildlife and local landowners, the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program does valuable work for community and conservation. You can find out more and support the project here: www.zoo.org/tkcp/donate
🎧 Danny Nanne, one of the locals, was even accepted to the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG). He completed his BSc in Environmental Sciences & Geography and is now working as TKCP's Community Conservation Coordinator. In the "Conservation Optimism" (University of Oxford) podcast, he shares his childhood experience with endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroos in PNG. I’ve never heard of a conservation effort that assists local communities in exchange for helping with conservation. Not only does it help the people of the region but it also changes their view on wildlife and nature. Great work and hopefully this will serve as a blueprint to unite people from all around the world to help save this planet.

Amazing success at turning the local hunters into local conservator. The funding is spent more efficiently when direct to help the local survive so they don’t hunt than spending on sending people to the forest and capture these animals and manually grow them in a safer place.

"So the question is; 'does all the local population participates in the conservation of these tree kangaroos?; the answer is 'yes'': Actually I felt very good at this statement.
