    I got pretty big into N scale about 16 years ago and bought lots of these off eBay and realized that as long as they are destroyed or physically burnt looking these locos are usually pretty good tough little guys for the most part.

    I modeled in N-scale, starting in 1970, and I know which of the old brands are good and which aren't, but unlike you, I have no talent for fixing them.
    That GP7 looked like an old Arnold/Rapido model, built in West Germany. They had the oversized silver wheels and dual drive.
    They were maybe the best running of the N-scale engines of the time - very weighty, and their ALCO FA cab unit engines had metal bodies. The body shells were a little bit out of scale. They were also sold under the Aurora, or Revelle label.
    The Atlas models with only four driving wheels were basically worthless, but some of them, built in Austria (I think?) featured dual drive (all axles powered) and could be spotted by their red gearing, visible from the bottom. Their GP30 was one of the good types. The body shells were crisply detailed and very authentic looking, however.
    Minitrix locomotives, I believe, were manufactured in Austria and were highly regarded back in the early 70s. They were heavy, but had a tiny 3-pole motor that required a good bit of juice to get them started. Once they started running, they were good runners, with no jerky operation.
    Bachmann's offerings in that era featured metal gearing and were loud, but they were superior runners to the 80s models with the nylon gearing, that caused jerky starts and uneven acceleration, and the plastic gears tended to warp over time.

    The one with 2 front axles and 3 rear axles is an interesting one. I think only two types of locomotives ever used this wheel arrangement. This one is a Fairbanks-Morse C-liner passenger locomotive and the extra axle on the rear truck was unpowered and was there to support the extra weight of the steam generator for passenger use.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FM_Consolidated_line#C-liner_models
    The other locomotive with this wheel arrangement was the EMD FL9.

    N scale locomotives are designed and built with more precision than any larger scale. Especially brands like Kato and Micro Trains. ScaleTrains is a newer brand I've not owned yet. They're supposed to be good. I own five brands of engines and Kato is clearly the best. They're the smoothest running at slow speeds, and have the fastest top speed, also the most quiet running, excellent detail on the bodies, though ScaleTains are said to have great detail and paint work.

  • @michaeljohnson7493
    @michaeljohnson7493 3 роки тому

    I love old N scale, and I do find the older models of low-cost manufacturers run much better than their HO offerings. They often aren't prototypical, but this model railroader doesn't care (my imagination is always more attractive than reality, anyhow). I still have Rapido couplers on all my stuff, and since my collection is large and I'm working on upgrading my HO couplers first, the N scale will wait awhile. And, at many train shows, people are almost giving away N scale cars with Rapido couplers, so there's that.

      @ErickC 3 роки тому +1

      1:30 looks like an early Bachmann F9 (the gaudily oversize one).
      The locomotive at 3:15 is a Fairbanks-Morse C-liner. Passenger C-liners had a B-A1A configuration because steam generators are heavy, y0.
      4:45 is not an SD9, it's a Mehano/Model Power/whatever RSD15 (although in the real world if it was high hood and ATSF it'd be an RSD7 - but the paint makes it basically fictitious in any case).
      The locomotives at 6:00 and 6:40 are both GP40s, both Model Power/Mehano by the looks of it. GP38s only have two radiator fans.
