Man! She had such a gigantic voice! We’re really missing this kind of quality dramatic singing these days 😪

Cailin Gudio I heard Rysanek in both her soprano and mezzo roles. A great actress, but her voice never struck me as particularly large. The sopranos who really pinned me to my seat were Eva Marton, Gwyneth Jones, and Birgit Nilsson.

king comes out on top. His sound is essentially the same as it always was, and continued to be until the end. Really remarkable with so many Wagner "miles" on it. Rysanek by this time was like 3 different singers. (All three had some rough spots). But the blazing top flashes through a couple of times!.

@@wotan10950 I’m guessing that her upper register was much bigger than her middle and lower registers though?
To your point about Rysanek v. Nilsson, it made perfect sense that Rysanek almost always took the lighter roles (with higher tessituras) whenever they appeared in the same operas.

James King is Tom Hanks at 4:30. He still has that voice even at this age, but man, he sounded so much better in the 1968 Ring. That Walküre is the one that I first heard him sing, and I still love that record.

Zum Teil sehr schön und lyrisch gesungen. Vor allem die Rysanek. Den King habe ich besser gehört. Zuviel forciert. Keine runden hohen Töne mehr. Hatte er sie überhaupt noch?
