Him at the end clapping just makes it seem like he's so much crazier than they make you think with the song. Like he commissioned the song to be written, and then performed for him, him alone.
One of my favorite bits of the live video is that it's an extended version of the song actually. the orginal ends with stabbing shia in the kidneys and then you're safe. And I remember watching the video for the first time and when the line "But wait! He isn't dead! Shia Surprise!" happened I laughed so hard I almost passed out.
Fun Fact: his speech "I never learned how to count" is a reference to one of his songs he wrote in Tally Hall called Haiku. You can guess how the song goes
Honestly I can't imagine it without the pan to Shia at the end. The way that's done is just chilling and perfect and makes it seem like an "in joke" as others have said. Incredible.
The fact you didn’t mention Holes as one of his break out films is heartbreaking, so many people in their 20s got their first real taste of Shia LeBouf from Disney’s Holes. I was too young to really be intrigued by Even Stevens even though older kids around me would watch it.
@@jamie1602 When the right moment comes up I still say "I can fix that" in everyday life, BUT NO ONE EVER GETS ITS! It amuses me at least. An iconic film from our generation 🙌🏻
One of my favorite things about this video is that before it was released, the "Shia Surprise" verse of the song had not been released, it originally ended with the protagonist suffocating Shia Labeouf. I still remember getting to that section right when it first came out and being super hyped by the addition of that last verse.
Me too! I'd been listening to the original (and also "Christian Bale is at your party") endlessly, and was so excited when the song kept going. Gunny it wasn't mentioned in this video, but oh well.
My favorite thing is that Shia Labeouf applauding is nearly a shot-for-shot recreation of a scene Citizen Cane, complete with stopping applause when the house lights turn on.
I met Mr.LeBouf years ago at the Chicago comic convention C2E2. He had a comic he was promoting that I think he wrote and drew. My understanding was he didn't really ask to be there or tell anyone, because he wasn't billed and just had a normal booth. Anyway I went and said hi and got a copy and told him I liked his work and that I wish him the best. He just say "Thanks for your support man, it really means a lot" and shook my hand. He was a really nice dude
I have no doubt it can be extremely hard to deal with everything that attention and scrutiny gets you, but it can also do a lot. Hard place to be. Missed all the public attention on him though, but I tend to avoid that sort of thing.
I remember when that Shia LaBeouf song pretty much took over the internet. I knew about it LONG before I knew who Rob Cantor was, and that he was the yellow tie from my now favorite band
So this video is about Rob Cantor from the band Tally Hall, made by a guy that makes Weezer videos, and it has Kirby music? Somehow this video reaches 3 of my niche interests, incredible.
As someone with moderate faceblindness, I only just learned that it's Shia LaBeouf at the end of the video. I'd never seen anything with him in it, and just liked the video for its surrealism. I thought the guy at the end was someone random and the joke was that the performance was receiving a one man standing ovation
It's also worth mentioning the fan-made animated video that came out before the live video. That's how I first found the song and it was pretty popular itself. When the live version came out, it was crazy cause it felt like just a small internet joke song that me and my friends liked.
This is the comment I came looking for. I didn’t even know about the live version at first and to this day I still consider the fan animated video the true music video
What I got from this: This song and associated music video caused Shia LaDeouf to begin a downward spiral to becoming how he was described in the song.
So I'm an aerial silks artist, and I took my first aerial class shortly after this video came out. I'd been wanting to learn silks for years prior, but I watched the Shia Labeouf video on repeat when it came out, so I think it helped reignite my interest and inspire me to sign up for a class! 🎪 It delights me that the director didn't know about the aerialists until day-of. Quite a few years ago, I did martial arts in LA, and Rob was a semi regular there for the meditations. I didn't recognize him, but we chatted a bit, and eventually the Shia video came up. I was like oh cool, and Bora, a good friend from the dojo was like "I was in that video too". Looks like he also helped put together those iconic masks! LA is funny like that, you might never know the guy you've been kicking and throwing for the last couple years has millions of views on UA-cam...
Ahhhh that makes sense - in citizen Kane if I recall correctly, the context of the scene is that he’s just tried to make his wife into a star that she absolutely was not destined to be. And while his applause seems enthusiastic, his facial expression is deeply troubled in a “what have I done?” Sort of way. But it’s been quite some time since I’ve seen it so I could be completely off basis
This video is still bizarre to me years later, I went to a performing arts school in la called Renarts and for a few years we were personally taught by the Argus quartet (at least Jason and Diana) and on one of their last days they mentioned they were preparing for a film shoot, I just assumed it was some classical music thing or student film I’d never see, but a week or so later I see my teachers faces on a massively popular meme video and to this day it’s like that same feeling locked in time lmao. Wonder where they are now
Okay, so when I friend told me the Shia LeBouf song was by Rob Cantor, whom I knew from I'm Gonna Win on my villain playlist, it floored me. Honestly I'm not sure why I felt the need to write all about it here - but I'm glad you included him in your video.
I still can't believe that Shia accidentally got his dad audited by the IRS because of Shia's interview on Conan. Also Shia's dad rolled doobies for the Dooby Brothers, and grew the weed next to a random exit on a highway (the plants were stapled to the ground to keep them from standing up and being seen).
I remember way back in middle school, I held a presentation about the music video in our english class. The teacher loved it, as he knew shia, but hadn't seen the music video yet. Afterwards we'd also have a running gag in class, saying shia labeoufs name in a serious tone when something happened. Good times

I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. I was heartbroken, sad, crying all the time. And then, on a Tumblr post, the text just said "it's October, it's that time of the year again", with a play bar below. No video, just audio. For some reason, I pushed play. And then, like magic, I started laughing my ass off at the most amazingly ridiculous lyrics I've ever heard... To this day, if I'm feeling sad and I want to shake it off, this is my song. "Shia Labeouf" Live if it was good
Weezer? That's super offensive to us asthmatics.
And it would be even cooler if tally hall was there; if they exist.
His album ''not a trampoline'' is one of my confort album I go back to all of the time, it's very good
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song.
The live video made it even better. I like bathos too, Rob.
Great video. Shia LaBeouf live is still one of the best creation of the internet of all times.
shia labeouf live being a tally hall song is so shocking but so believable
8 years later I still love this whole thing.
Love seeing this kind of stuff, thank you
Great vid. I'm a big fan of Tally Hall and I have to recognize that you made a great research for this video.
This video is great. Everything is good , the research, the editing. I really, I enjoyed it.
This was a great video, thank you for streamlining such a wonderful experience
