I love the opening talk about getting old. Im almost 40 and what i love is that now i can go to bed when i want/need to. Before it was a battle between brain and body. They are now FINALLY synched. lol
I hope that happens to me. I'm still in my 30's and me and my husband STILL say we're going to bed every night, then stay up watching stuff and goofing off and feeling tired in the morning.

Ben. You need to get into mindfulness. Learn how to meditate (properly!), and then you will be able to sleep. You won't be lost in thoughts anymore. Not to mention the other benefits, but whatever. This is about sleep lol.
It's still hard when you have a stressful job with long hours.

Certainly can be... but usually thoughts are what keeps someone up. So it's pretty effective, regardless of how many thoughts and how much stress you have. Nothing else really deals directly with the thoughts themselves.
Apart from like... knocking yourself out with drugs, for one example.

Simple. Set an alarm. You can always set it again for a few more hours if you couldn't get to sleep at first.
Even if we didn't set an alarm, most of us wake up after 9 hours max. I remember hearing that unless if you were sick drunk or very exhausted, sleeping over 12 hours it a sign of depression (or something else regarding our health).

You may also want to check out Lewy Body Dementia. Takes a brain scan to diagnose. Robin Williams had it, was misdiagnosed with Parkinsons. LBD makes a person foggy and depressed.
