Sonic Origins fan logo by Kennie (and I added the awful looking "Weird?" text): twitter.com/MacKennith Hey! Thank you for watching this... random video. I didn't have a long list of weird things about the release, but there was a big thing and small thing that stood out for me. Don't think this is a "Sonic Origins is RUINED!1!1" video paired with a thumbnail where Sonic consumes money like Kirby. It's just to get some thoughts out there.
I've tried that and it's still a bit blurry. It's because, in fullscreen, the game is still stretched to fit the resolution of the monitor. The decomp manages to make the game look razor sharp, even with the stretched game.
The whole base game + dlc being more expensive than the deluxe edition has always been a standard in the videogame industry and not "a sega thing", I'm not saying it's a good thing but it just seems like a weird thing to point out like it's an exception
Yeah, I understand that, but this is all content that is normally included in base versions of remakes, remasters, and collections, but Sega has made all of those extras DLC, in their last few releases.
It was not always a standard. You used to be able to buy a game, pop it in, and play. Just because it's standard now doesn't mean we should be okay with it. It's a toxic anti-consumer practice, and we should speak up about it more.
I’m definitely getting this in the hopes for a sonic advance collection remaster one day. Thanks for addressing your thoughts and concerns. I hope a physical release will happen. Great video.
Sonic Advance actually does deserve to see the light of day again, out of all the 2D attempts to capture the essence of the older titles they were the most successful at doing so. Advance 3 is hands down the best Advance game in this regard for me. Who knows maybe they'll make it as DLC for this lmao. I'd actually wonder if it could be ported to the Retro Engine, that could be interesting.
So for the "lives" point you mentioned: I've always found that since i was 7 years old, ive never once cared about lives. I cant remember the last time i even used a continue. And i imagine its the same way for a lot of people. As for the people who DO die a lot and need to improve, id argue its much easier to improve when you can quickly get back into the content that is currently challenging them. (sonic 2's final bosses for example)
I remember when I was a kid playing the Genesis I would often lose all my lives on the final boss in Sonic 2. Then I'd need to play the whole thing again just to have another crack at it. Yeah, I eventually beat it, and it felt SO rewarding when I did. And I've played it many MANY times since so it's no longer a challenge. But I would have rathered not need to restart the whole game. The removal of limited lives is definitely a good idea.
Would have been more appealing if they finally released Knuckles Chaotix witht he set, that or maybe some cancelled games like Sonic Crackers or the Sat AM game.
That would be fantastic. I would love a release of the original or a remastered version of Knuckles' Chaotix. Now, the Sat AM game is something I need to look into because this is the first I'm hearing of this.
@@GottaBeFrank Really? There's some footage of it, it's a rather slow paced game ironically. But it's weird why these companies dont' capatalise on their unreleased library, Nintendo released Starfox 2 not too long ago, and Sega released a cancelled pitch of Golden Axe on Steam a few years back.
Using the modern engine for the classic mode is a positive IMO. The emulated ROM experience was always pretty terrible. All kinds of weird collision bugs (like randomly coming to a dead stop at the top of a loop in chemical plant, randomly dying on a bridge in Emerald Hill, etc). Much better to have the visuals, challenge and levels we remember, but using modern coding.
Hey dude, pretty neat video. I certainly am looking to pick up Sonic Origins personally because whilst I do have all these games on original hardware including Sonic CD, I really dig the idea of the missions and adding extra content to old/legacy games. I’ll certainly try to preorder the digital deluxe edition to get all the content although I’m gonna wait on that because maybe Sega might respond to all this and decide to release a physical edition with all extra content which I would prefer as I won’t be forced to pre-order it as I’m more focused on putting my money elsewhere atm. Been subscribed to you since before the rebrand and I’ve been to a few of your streams including one Switch Team Sonic Racing stream and your most recent stream. Btw, gonna see Sonic The Hedgehog again but in 4DX this time and I’m pretty hyped for it as I want to see it again and I think it would be the perfect movie for 4DX. Good luck with your Sonic The Hedgehog 2 review! I’ll definitely look forward to it.
@@ramonandrajo6348 Well, tbh, I don’t really have a proper computer to emulate games on and I just prefer playing on console tbh. I’m fine with piracy when it comes to it being a service issue where the game is very hard to play legitimately but if there is a way like this collection for example, I’m gonna be in support for that especially as I want the great dev team to be paid well for their work. You do you though as I don’t have any problem with it.
I'd like to see it ported or remastered, rather than remade. Upscale the models, textures, etc and keep the game feel intact. Maybe just ported. Last time a 3D Sonic game was remastered, it didn't go so well.
Completely agree. Weird I read this as I had an urge to play Heroes today. Had it on PS2 and it was awful, crap framerates and grainy textures. I then got it on Xbox and loved it. Anyone know if this is backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 or newer Xbox's? Cos I might have to get it again if so.
Agree 100% I am a Sonic fan thru and rhru. I was going to get this no matter what they charged for it. So, yes I'm a little confused by this release, but absolutely going to get the pre-order/deluxe. I have a Giant Blue Hedgehog standing next to my TV from the Mania Deluxe edition and am really hoping for a physical release with similar perks. Good video, Thanks for the info.
I think the reason why the Digital Deluxe edition is $5 more than the standard edition is simply because it's closer to $50. It may sound cynical, but a collection of 4 classic Sonic games for $50, or even $60 is too much, so the next best thing for Sega is have the standard edition that is objectively inferior; just for the illusion of choice. You can choose the standard edition, but why should you, when you get extra goodies in the deluxe version for just five extra dollars?
And that's what I hate about it. I really miss when collections had extras included in the base game or the lack of extras would mean a lower price, or something like that.
What I find a shame is they didn't include Chaotix which is a game alot of people haven't played, I have and I don't think it's even really that good of a game just that it should be in there, also missing the 8-bit games. I get the core genesis games are the ones every one remembers the best, but there were other games of the time period that get kinda shrugged off, and that's a shame. Sonic CD was a bit underground until it got remade and people were able to play it, I don't think these other games are quite as good as it, but idk they deserve some love.
I'm personally worried about how Sonic Origins has no mod support- That and maybe Amy not being playable, if only because she seems promoted like a main character. Something's just missing.
Female characters who are promoted like main characters but get completely sidelined in the main content are not new for Japanese franchises. Naruto, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Ball, a lot of them do the same thing. They don't know how to write female characters without making them degenerate waifu bait. It's a stupid standard, and we need to speak up about it more.
They BETTER have Amy (Rosy) and Metal Sonic playable in the game, or otherwise, i'm NOT buying it ... If PC gamers can make any of the Sonic characters playable, then what's SEGA's pathetic excuse to not have them playable?
Don’t know what you expect from a classic collection. They have Hidden Palace Sonic 2, and animations between games, and that’s only the start. It’s fine if you aren’t excited but some people are fine with a collection
I've played all games that folks want a collection for. No shame in not wanting it, but it's mine to be able to play more definitive versions on current hardware
I wouldn't call it boring unless you think the OGs are, unoriginal is the word your looking for. But its about time they gave us classic sonic games from the past again, SEGA knows that's when sonic was at its prime
i’m so confused it sounds like massive nitpicking lol, every company does this. they release a deluxe edition that encourages people to buy it because it’s less expensive than buying the base game and adding the DLCs later. there’s not really a need for it. and complaining about frame rate? are we being serious lol i respect your take man really but bro i’m literally laughing at the fact you said “i know it’s not truly classic bc frame rate” 😭
Not exactly what I said. The extra frames of animation are in the remaster, not the original, which is why I said it's not using a ROM of the original. It's forcing the remaster into a 4:3 aspect ratio and calling that classic mode, but it'll still play like the remaster.
While you have some valid points. "Is this the best way of playing these games?" shouldn't even be a question. Any gripes about a life system that doesn't really matter (it was easy to get lots of lives in the original) and any gripes about the menu and some extra silly DLC is completely cancelled out by the fact that a complete set of 16:9 Retro Engine ports (code wise the games are remade) are finally available on console. That alone makes them the best way to play.
Yeah, the people who would be most likely to want to keep the lives system would be the people who the lives system would be most irrelevant to. I like trying to rack up as many lives as I can get but it doesn’t really amount to much because I can beat all the games on the initial 3 lives anyway. The new people - the ones who would most likely be made better by the lives system - don’t want it
So what you're saying implementing a toggle where you could turn lives on and off is too much to ask because the games are already easy? Even despite the devs acknowledging that people *DO* want to play with limited lives by adding "classic" mode to the mix, albeit in 4:3.
@@kenpierce1464 that might be better but I’m still not going to complain about it being confined to the “Classic” mode. It’s just nitpicking what is going to be an excellent release
"It was easy to get lots of lives in the original" _yeah... How good were you in marble and scrap brain? Because it was not easy to get lives, it was just easy to live_
@@luckywii8731 I was pretty good at marble eventually. That Zone is like a chokepoint in the original. And it is probably difficulty spikes like that, that led to them playing it safe and just disabling lives and timer end.
Most people don't know what denuvo is and won't care. Most people don't care about the little 5$ extras and won't care if they don't have them. Most people don't look this closely. They just buy the game and get on with their life. Is this stuff ideal? No, probably not, but it also doesn't matter much. In either case, the whole package is 45$ Which is 15 bucks cheaper than it could have easily gotten away with... so...
Honestly i think the people complaining about the no lives thing and making us better by having lives, well those people probably already have access to the sonic games.
I mean the remasters are easy enough. They don't take you to the very beginning of the game. Just the beginning of the act you got the game over on. Players have to improve at some point and that was a fair change, with the remasters.
It's a collection of the Taxman and Stealth versions of Sonic 1, 2, and CD running on the Retro Engine that Taxman built from the ground up to play those games in widescreen with 60 FPS, better physics, and other additional features like scrapped stages and the addition of the entire trio of characters playable across most of the games (Knuckles isn't playable in CD). This engine was later used for Sonic Mania, and now they're bringing these versions which, aside from CD, were previously exclusive to mobile phones to console, as well as finally doing the same for Sonic 3 and Knuckles, which didn't have a version previously.
If you are getting this for Sonic 3 And Knuckles, don’t. If you have a PC, you can get Sonic 3 And Knuckles off STEAM and add the FREE Sonic 3 Angel Island Revisited code, you can get not only a extremely better version of Sonic 3 And Knuckles more than in Sonic Origins and also including Mods, but you can also get it for way cheaper. I got it for like FIVE DOLLARS OFF STEAM, everything else was FREE!
Why are there different versions? Easy answer: for money. They are trying to incentivize all/as many people as they can to purchase the Digital Deluxe version by including features that you might miss out on (FOMO). For each digital sale (much cheaper than producing physical copies on a large scale), they will make that much more money. Let's face it, they know that many will buy this. Sonic 3 with a remaster (and on current consoles) has been a long time coming and there are many fans that will throw all their money at it to own these classics, regardless of how money-grubbing SEGA is appearing in their eyes. The demographic has the purchasing power so why not tease all of the extra features as "optional"? The breakdown between the DLC and editions is very convoluted but I can't think of a better way to convey this convoluted info than with the chart that they used. I myself got the deluxe. Here's hoping it's all worth it.. I will not be surprised if they release a disc version later toting even more features with a price point of at least $35 for a regular version ($90+ for a special edition, anyone?)
To answer your question: because it makes great sense profit-wise. You're going to buy it anyway, and profit is a time based goal when it comes to having investors. Hell if I had a company like Sega I would do the same thing. My family needs to eat.
It seems like the reason for this release model should be obvious. Die hards get to feel like they're getting something extra by buying the deluxe edition, people who don't really care but have heard of Sonic will be more inclined to pick up a cheaper standard version, if they end up enjoying it then they spend more money than the die hards to finish the game. It's a really efficient plan for getting the most possible money out of a game like Origins. I should say that I don't think there's anything even "wrong" with that. Sure, it sucks if you don't have the extra money right then to get the deluxe version so you shell out for the standard early then pay more for the DLC later but that is a choice. You can wait until you've got the extra money to buy it if it's important to you to get the most value for your dollar. Otherwise, it provides a "cheap" version for the common folk and a full-featured version for anyone who's actually paying attention to the release of the game ;)
I kinda feel bad for Sega people Shitting on them when they finally listening to the fans but still get shit on about a game be only on digital when people don't complain about spider man 2 not being on ps4 only ps5
For Spider-Man 2, it has to be because the PS4 would hold back the PS5 version. That's why a lot of the cross generation games aren't absolute technical marvels. They have to consider the previous generation, which is a potato compared to the new gen system. A physical Sonic Origins is much easier to do, than to develop a current gen game to previous gen hardware.
I hate limited lives. it is stupid and annoying. I have a job, so I don't have the time to sink into "getting good" at not dying. people have the option ti stick to classic or to play hard mode. other people can enjoy the lack of an archaic annoying feature that just leads to less interest in finishing. we can replay the levels afterwards and "get good". don't force us to do everything over and over again-I will just play something else
The great thing about Sonic Origins is that Sonic 3 & Knuckles finally gets a Retro Engine port. My guess is that this version of S3&K gets decompiled eventually, which could open the doors for more possibilities in the long run. The big question is however if the rumored legal issues with the Sonic 3 soundtrack is finally resolved, thereby the original Sega Genesis soundtrack in all the music tracks of that game.
..... the individual items cost 'more' than the bundle... Geeez... it's like if you couldn't afford a 2 liter soda and decided to buy 6 individual cans of soda If you don't buy the deluxe bundle.. then you deserve to pay more when you want the rest of the features. The reason why Sega is doing this is because they're gambling the people who will go for the standard version will eventually warm up to the other features.. I agree there should be just one version for everyone.. but they will be some stupid people who will go for the standard... and those people will be the non sonic fans and eventually they will pay more money for a full game.
Yeah... a big F you to the consumer for not knowing. I don't agree with that, at all. If there are issues with that, all the blame will fall on the publisher for making it possible to be confused by it.
I'm getting Standard because even for five bucks extra no dlc is worth it. I mean, paying for camera controls in the menus and character animations in a sound test are stupid shit to pay for, the extra music tracks are not new compositions and if I wanted I would just listen to them on youtube and the main reason why I won't buy the DDE: NO EARLY ACCES.
@@SadScorpion956 Let me check the little chart... Hard Missions.... You know what? You're being stupid.. but if it's really an issue of money, wait a year. The price of the digital deluxe will go down to 20 or 30 dollars... like ALL the other sonic games. They might actually have a physical version later.. which would have pushed you to buy the game twice. like what they did with Sonic Mania There's a good chance you already have all the sonic games.. either individually on Steams or a part of their Genesis collection.. which is CHEAPER than Origins. If you're willing to pay for an inferior product over 5 dollars, simply hold your horses until the full thing become cheaper Even if you buy the game, you're not going to play it as often as other games.. This is a novelty purchase.. if you're not getting the full thing over a 5 dollars, difference, then you're being asinine.
I feel like this video greatly underestimates or fails to see the perspective of people with casual interest in the game, people who recognize it and are thinking about maybe picking it up. $5-10 makes a huge difference on the chances of buying the game for a person in that position, especially when they have no particular interest in the extra features that would be locked behind the deluxe version. It's a bit silly to assume that everyone who would have interest in potentially buying the game would eventually want to buy the DLC as well.
I guess that's true. I find it weird that all of that content would even be DLC, since other collections go out of their way to include a lot of extras in the base game. Why does Sega need to make it separate? That company confuses me sometimes.
@@GottaBeFrank That's fair, there's a strong argument to be made that a collection like this should be expected to pack in a bit more content, especially comparing to older collections
Cant wait to finnally play those games in Widescreen 60fps^^ I dont care what kinda shit surrounds this game, i care more about the quality of the game. Already Preordered the Digital Deluxe. I dont get why the Standart version even exist???
While collections are appreciated, this one is kinda a letdown... The "Classic" and "anniversary" settings don't make much of a difference in terms of quality, was hoping they would Maniafy it all but, I guess not... And Most of the games in the pack are free in Appstores anyways. This game isn't bad (cause the OGs aren't), but the pricing kinda is, and paywalling anything is bad, no matter how much it costs, its like EA all over again
Taking out the lives does haz zero effect on the experience. You literally even stated they didn’t even matter anymore. Talk about out of touch lmao But wide screen is MUST HAVE that’s a feature you want because it effects you and you didn’t have to think through “why” so much
Yeah, Sonic Origin's release seems needlessly complicated, on top of a couple of other oddities like apparently no Knuckles in Sonic CD, I'm still hopeful for it, but cautiously so.
Even as someone who’s played 1 Forever,2 Absolute as well as 3 AIR & 2013 CD I’m honestly gonna enjoy Origins. Hell I’ll check out Origins out of curiosity of the challenges, extras & unlocking musem content etc, yet once the modding community does their magic it’ll become interesting honestly
I'm still hyped for this when it gets released while I own plenty of copies of sonic one and two i don't own any version of sonic cd this would be a great way for me to own a version of this game in my collection same for sonic 3 and knuckles although I own the cartridges for those titles it would still be nice to own another compilation that contains those games as well as cd
Sega has removed all the classic Sonic games from Steam, basically derailing a shit-ton of incredible mods for those games in one fell swoop. They want Origins to be the only way you can play those games, and looking at that chart and seeing "100 Bonus Coins" makes me fearful that microtransactions might be somehow involved, considering the main mode is "coin mode". But even if not, it's absolutely ludicrous that additional visual quicks of the main menu are locked behind a paywall. Objectively, this isn't the worst thing Sega has ever done; but on principle, it is incredibly representative of unhinged capitalistic greed. I will not be supporting this, at all.
@@GottaBeFrank Gotta be honest, Sonic games are for the most part pretty forgiving. I saw last weekend my bro who havent played a Sonic game since the 90s fumble his way through a stage and still beat it thanks to the ring system it has. Add save files to it like in Sonic CD and 3&K which later ports added to 1 & 2 and you got a pretty forgiving game with no need to remove the life system which works as away to penalize the player a bit but not too much.
no offense and no hate at all but like when will sonic fans be actually greatful for what they have like dude try coding its seriously hard like just be greatful goddamnit i hate ungreatful people and you have a point about the money thing but like the thing about "the chart is stupid" dude do you know how hard coding is? LIKE SERIOUSLY BE FRICKING GREATFUL WHAT THE HELL
Alright. I can tell, by the immaturity, that you are a younger person, so I can explain why people can be critical of this release. Yes, I know how hard coding is. I've taken a few coding courses in college. Coding isn't the issue here, but the way that the content is locked as DLC. DLC that didn't need to happen as many collections, in the past few years, go out of their way to include that in the base game. We can be critical, but respectful, at the same time. The "JUST BE GREATFUL" crowd, in my time discussing games online, doesn't really see that or refuses to see that.
I just want to be able to use lives in widescreen, the reason people love modding the mobile ports of Sonic 1 and 2 is because they want more options and choices that aren't made for them.
Hey. Don't let my concerns stop you from buying it. I'm considering picking it up. I just wished the DLC was just included to give the best possible base game, like how Sonic Mega Collection Plus added a lot of extra content for the price they charged.
@@GottaBeFrank you haven't played Skyrim special edition or fallout 4 then, just off the top of my head. DLC is cheaper in the bundle, damn near always
Bro I wish this game didn’t exist it’s just sega being lazy as the 4 og sonic games on steam were like 5 bucks each which means that it’s 20 bucks but they are putting sonic origins as 40 bucks for little to no difference the only thing is that there’s different basically except for the animations
I was realy hyped for this Game.. but this anouncement nope im not gonna buy it no physical copy no buy.. and this Nonsens now with removing every Game from Sony also These Games from the Collection from every other Store Nope A reason more to Not buying it

I love how if you buy a physical copy of sonic colors ultimate, instead of getting all the dlc included like you did with sonic mania plus, you just get the base game and still have to pay for dlc, and the only special thing you got was an ugly keychain of movie sonic
I would have taken the DLC instead. That keychain is an eyesore and I left it in the box. The game is also in the box because it's not that good, but that's besides the point.
My only real complaint with this collection is how it was presented and when it came. Boy did I EVER get my hopes up for a new Mania. It REALLY looked like we were getting just that, But no. I've already played these on mega collection so I've got no reason to play these games anyway.
What? This was only ever presented as a collection, I don't remember ever seeing anything that would lead someone to believe that this was anything other than a Collection of the Genesis games.
@@darkhorse744 The art style certainly lead me to believe it was something else. I didn't really think "Oh yeah that's a collection of sonic 1-3 & K" I mean look at the thumbnail. The first thing I thought when I saw it was. "Yes! New 2D Sonic game coming! So If Frontiers becomes a flop, we got a sequel to game made by fans who new how to make a Sonic game enjoyable!" (Before you jump to the conclusion that I think Sonic is only good in 2D, let me say it right out of the gate. I don't think that. I'm of the opinion that Sonic Mania's creators knew what they were trying to make. [Unlike a certain Sonic Forces team])
@@toonlinkunknown7667 The Forces "Team" only really got a year to make the game, there was almost no way it was gonna end up being that great a product. Also, I don't think you have anyone but yourself to blame for thinking Origins is a new game, information about it has been out since last year.
@@darkhorse744 I didn't blame anyone, I was only saying my complaint cause I can do that, And "Origins" isn't too out of place with my mind as a NEW Sonic game name. This is the same franchise that has Sonic the Hedgehog, (06 wasn't in the name when it came out). "Origins" was the name for a few reasons. Why didn't they just say "Sonic classic"? Cause Origins sounds more sophisticated. But when you got titles like "Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood", You bet your neck I got excited for a new game. That, and I know they only had a year. But what they did with that year wasn't the right thing to put production into. Stuff like light humor put in the same context that there's a war going on and we're suppose to take it seriously. For example; "Oh hey! Sounds like the party's started! Wanna let me go and join in? No? Of course not. You hate fun." Says the same 16 year old (Chronically) Blue Hedgehog that was said to have been tortured just to pass the time. If the characters don't take the story seriously, why should the audience? Like what happened to the Sonic that took these kinds of things seriously!? What about in Black Knight, Secret Rings, Unleashed, and 06 where we had a Sonic that was not only up beat and cracking witty jokes, but was serious when the situation called for it? Instead we were given a Sonic that came from Colors. One that said jokes and puns all the dang time, and never took any darn to what-ever that might cross his path that might've been horrible. Oh sure sonic IS Cool with his powers and abilities. But why do people like classic Sonic's personality? Cause he knew he was cool but didn't say it in your face. He's gained the attitude of Sly Cooper from Thieves in Time. Also, I don't think it's my fault not knowing about Sonic origins info from last year. I usually watch the Game Awards, directs, and E3 fro game news. I don't browse on any social media except for UA-cam. And I don't recall Saga puttin' any news about Origins until this trailer dropped. Anyway, my attention's been taken by Frontiers ever since the Game Awards.
You don’t have to buy the digital deluxe edition if you don’t care about the extra content. If you do care or want to be a completionist about it, you can. It’s literally just giving you the option to pay a little less for a little less. I’ve seen a lot of people complain about this but I don’t get the controversy. No one has explained to me how having the option to pay less for less unnecessary bonus content is unfair or not good
Because there are compilations that would include those kinds of content in the base game. It's super weird to make a Deluxe Edition for a game that would be pretty light on extras, when most devs go out of their way to add neat extras into it and not charge more.
@@GottaBeFrank so, let me get this straight: if they would’ve simply charged you $45 for the game and the extras (that you don’t want that much) altogether - doing away with the tiers and only having a “base game” - then you would’ve been happier with that than having the option to pay $40 to not have those things? That doesn’t make sense at all. Unless what you’re saying is you value the bonus content at $0.00. But presumably Sega artists/programmers/employees were paid to conceptualize, design, and implement this extra content, so it has to have SOME monetary value. If it’s not worth $5 to you, then you don’t have to pay $5. If it is, then there’s nothing to complain about Basically, what you’re saying is “give me free stuff” because in your mind, this is just a product from an impersonal, faceless brand. But I’d be willing to bet that you respect some of the workers like Stealth behind the product; you’re just not taking into consideration that you’re buying this game also supports them or that their time and labor is just as valuable as yours
What I'm saying is that it's pointless to have 2 purchasing options, with one of them having all of the content that other companies would include in the base game. A perfect example would be Capcom with the Mega Man collections. All of the legacy collections have extras and new features included in those games and each collection is priced at $40 each because they know that older titles do not retain their value, in digital re-releases. The Classic Legacy Collection has 10 titles (6 NES, 1 SNES, 1 PS1, & 2 from Xbox 360/PS3), all of the challenge levels, and extras. The X Legacy Collection has 8 titles (3 SNES, 3 PS1, & 2 PS2), which use 3 different emulators, a boss rush, and other extras. The Zero/ZX Legacy Collection has 6 games (4 GBA & 2 DS), with enhancements, and extra content. 3 of the Sonic remasters were only a few dollars each. Sonic 1 & 2 were a $2 and Sonic CD was $2 or $5, depending on the platform you get it from. Again, I'm okay with a $40 collection. These days, it's a bit higher than some, but still a reasonable price for a ]game compilation. The issue is that the DLC could have been included in the base game, giving players more for their $40. Would people look back at the Mega Collection Plus fondly if the extras were sold separately?
@@GottaBeFrank This collection has had just as much if not more put into it than the Mega Man Legacy Collections. I trust that, being a Sonic tuber, you’re aware that the reason these games are presented in widescreen here where other retro compilations are not is because the games were literally recreated in a new engine as if they were new games. That’s also why stuff like knuckles in Sonic 1 can work, where you wouldn’t see stuff like that in other retro compilations using emulation, like Mega Man’s Legacy Collections (which are also great) or other Sega Genesis collections So if it were simply a $45 base game that included all the extras, you would’ve preferred that as opposed to having the option to pay $40 to not have those things? Or you’re saying that the animations, 3D worlds, and extra music is worth $0.00?
@@bradenhogan2 40 dollars is already a lot of money for 4 retro games with some small changes, so yeah that extra stuff should have been in the base game
1:32 No they didn't. They simply didn't. There's no better proof of this than all the most technically difficult platformers like Meat Boy and Rain World totally forgoing lives. Indie developers quickly figured out life systems do nothing but hamper progression.
@@GottaBeFrank That's my point - if games that actually need to build in effective systems that encourage player growth don't use lives, a game like Sonic will certainly see no benefit from them.
I was hoping for a nice physical Japanese boxed version myself, but I'm honestly not going to be surprised if Sega are looking to get people to double dip, like they did with Mania. Easy money. As things stand, I'll just save my money and stick to youtube, as there's very little that interests me outside the animated cutscenes. And much like with Colours Ultimate "why are you making such a big deal about lives?" Well if it's not a big deal, then surely it wouldn't be an issue to put them back into the game?
How many times are Sega going to re-release the classic Sonic games? Wouldn't it be better to get a brand new classic Sonic game? Even Sonic Mania mashed the old zones in with only 3 new ones. Sega are also ashamed of Sonic's Mega Drive roots opting to go with the shitty remasters from now on. I'd rather play the blocky pixelated original versions from the 90's. And no physical version on a disc is a ground breaker for me.
What is annoying to me about this is the lives. I want to play with lives with the widescreen features! If I want to play in 4:3 I’ll just load up Kega Fusion like I’ve done for years. This was so close to being the definitive way to play all 3 games, but they had to add in some amount of bullshit with restricting the lives to the classic mode. I suppose I’ll just stick to the Sonic 1 and 2 decompilations and Sonic 3 AIR
I hate when remastered classic games gotta be so expensive... Take sonic mania its just 25 Ca$ and 20 US$ and 5$ for a dlc no need to increase the price for those classic games. *while i was making this comment i realized that the game was increased that sucks*
When you say the PC version of Sonic CD which are we talking about? The original PC version or the version that Tails and widescreen got added in? Because there's 2 versions of Sonic CD that exist on PC.

Hey!
First
im pretty sure there's an option to make Sonic CD not blurry
I've tried that and it's still a bit blurry. It's because, in fullscreen, the game is still stretched to fit the resolution of the monitor. The decomp manages to make the game look razor sharp, even with the stretched game.
@@GottaBeFrank but the nostalgia filter on and it should work thats what my settings are on
I just hope this collection has the vocals for the japanese/uk version of sonic CD
The entire video is just his knee jerk reaction zero research or really even thought went into it
It was not always a standard.
Yeah your right Sonic advance was also great in it's series it deserves a remaster some day we'll see for as long as we live and be happy
Add Sonic Battle and Sonic Pinball Party to that collection and I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
Holy shit that would be awesome on switch! Freaking games will always have a warm spot. Along with that sonic battle on the GBA

I don't understand why that hasn't happened yet.
@@GottaBeFrank Possibly because it's similar to something's Ubisoft did years ago, with the weird charts.
So the meme mines might be dry.
Annoying fact: Sonic colors ultimate had a Japan exclusive physical deluxe edition
I saw that and was so mad we didn't get something like it in the States. It looked so cool.
Japan is spoiled
What? I live in Chile and videogame/convenience stores are filled with the physical deluxe edition of SCU for PS4
But… Sonic isn’t popular in japan

That would be fantastic. I would love a release of the original or a remastered version of Knuckles' Chaotix. Now, the Sat AM game is something I need to look into because this is the first I'm hearing of this.
@@GottaBeFrank Really? There's some footage of it, it's a rather slow paced game ironically.

Completely agree. Weird I read this as I had an urge to play Heroes today. Had it on PS2 and it was awful, crap framerates and grainy textures. I then got it on Xbox and loved it.

No problem. Super jealous of the Mania Deluxe edition you have lol
@@GottaBeFrank Me too.
@@GottaBeFrank is the sonic 3 coming to mobile?
No. Console and PC only.
@@GottaBeFrank I hate sonic origins
I'm also a little sad Sonic 3D Blast is missing. The game sucked, but I'd like to play it again out of nostalgia. I played it a lot on the Genesis.
How is it possible that SEGA Menages to screw up Sonic Releases??

There was a Famitsu article that detailed some of the features of the game. Sadly, Amy and Metal don't see to be playable.
Are you paying attention to what you're saying?
Well amy and metal sonic were never playable in the classic era.
Are you even ok
It's not weird, it's boring. I'm glad some of you are excited, but man I've played these already to death. I want more.
Don’t know what you expect from a classic collection. They have Hidden Palace Sonic 2, and animations between games, and that’s only the start.
It’s fine if you aren’t excited but some people are fine with a collection
We get that you have played it. But it's not Origins' problem. A lot of people haven't got to play the games, that's why the collection is
I've played all games that folks want a collection for.
No shame in not wanting it, but it's mine to be able to play more definitive versions on current hardware
Yea the could have at least put in mania animations and sprites as a feature or something
I wouldn't call it boring unless you think the OGs are, unoriginal is the word your looking for.
But its about time they gave us classic sonic games from the past again, SEGA knows that's when sonic was at its prime
I agree with everything you said, tho I'm still not sold on liking the "Defense Squad" term
It's not meant to be a positive term.
i’m so confused it sounds like massive nitpicking lol, every company does this. they release a deluxe edition that encourages people to buy it because it’s less expensive than buying the base game and adding the DLCs later. there’s not really a need for it. and complaining about frame rate? are we being serious lol i respect your take man really but bro i’m literally laughing at the fact you said “i know it’s not truly classic bc frame rate” 😭
"It was easy to get lots of lives in the original"
_yeah...
In either case, the whole package is 45$ Which is 15 bucks cheaper than it could have easily gotten away with... so...
while I own the DS game of "sonic classic collection" I will still buy this because
I can
It'll be a different version of those games, at least.
You know Frank, although I have no idea what this origins is, I really value you actual ideas, and they sound great. Good video!
That's a PC option only. Console owners don't get that luxury.
I understand a company needing to make money, but this is the weirdest route to do so. What other collections make extras paid DLC?
It's stupid because it's content that other developers would have included in the base game. Sonic Origins didn't need this DLC.
I wish we could all just love and enjoy a sonic game for once. Is that all to ask?
If Sega didn't make weird choices with it, then yeah, we could love and enjoy it.
@@GottaBeFrank exactly

You are complaining for nothing serious.
If you pay the pack it must be cheaper than picking one by one. No concerns at all. This is normal.
Is it normal to take content other companies would include in the base game versions of collections and make it seperate DLC?
im just surprise Sonic 3 is Finally in a Collection lol no matter how many times they resale these i will always buy them lol its Sonic!
It wont take long to get a decomp of 3 & K
It would be funny if it's they use the Beta/PC Music in the game

Ehh, not this kind of weird
..... the individual items cost 'more' than the bundle... Geeez... it's like if you couldn't afford a 2 liter soda and decided to buy 6 individual cans of soda
If you don't buy the deluxe bundle.. then you deserve to pay more when you want the rest of the features.
They might actually have a physical version later.. which would have pushed you to buy the game twice. like what they did with Sonic Mania
There's a good chance you already have all the sonic games.. either individually on Steams or a part of their Genesis collection.. which is CHEAPER than Origins. If you're willing to pay for an inferior product over 5 dollars, simply hold your horses until the full thing become cheaper

It's not microtransactions, thankfully. The coins are an in-game currency used to unlock other items in the game.
100% agree with the Anniversary Mode having no life system.
Or give Classic mode the option for widescreen or 4:3. Give the player options.
All I care about is Sonic 3. This is all I wanted. They actually delivered more then I expected. I don’t see why anyone would be mad.

4:20 so spend the extra 5 bucks lmao
On extras that other companies would just include in the base game. Are you sure you are understanding what I'm trying to get at?
I feel like no matter what Sega does people always shit on them.
There are some confusing things that Sega loves to do, so some of it is warranted.
A lot of games have that deluxe edition is cheaper stuff. dead by daylight has it and many more. We aren't breaking new ground here.
I just want to be able to use lives in widescreen, the reason people love modding the mobile ports of Sonic 1 and 2 is because they want more options and choices that aren't made for them.
The fact a Sonic Origins ad plays over this video is... bold.. to say the least.
i dont care what Sega throws in my face, ill buy the same shit from 31 years in a heartbeat
Hey. Don't let my concerns stop you from buying it. I'm considering picking it up. I just wished the DLC was just included to give the best possible base game, like how Sonic Mega Collection Plus added a lot of extra content for the price they charged.
That's just how dlc works man, bundles make things cheaper. Not a Sega thing.
It is a Sega thing to make content, that other companies would put in collections, as DLC.
@@GottaBeFrank you haven't played Skyrim special edition or fallout 4 then, just off the top of my head. DLC is cheaper in the bundle, damn near always
You haven't seen any collections where they threw in a bunch of extras, for no extra cost. See? I can make assumptions too.
@@GottaBeFrank get a life 😒
Bro I wish this game didn’t exist it’s just sega being lazy as the 4 og sonic games on steam were like 5 bucks each which means that it’s 20 bucks but they are putting sonic origins as 40 bucks for little to no difference the only thing is that there’s different basically except for the animations
I'm a huge Sonic fan, but $40 for the base game is a huge rip-off. I'll wait until it drops to $25 or less
I was realy hyped for this Game.. but this anouncement nope im not gonna buy it no physical copy no buy.. and this Nonsens now with removing every Game from Sony also These Games from the Collection from every other Store Nope A reason more to Not buying it

wh- but-
sehga mega drive and genisis clasic...
I'm pre-ordered... I'm waiting the next 59 days
I just hope if cd is included that they dont take oyt the easter egg
Really makes me mad there is no physical version
It would be perfect to have. All of the remasters in a physical disc or cart.
The only bad thing is the preorder nonsense, but everything else is a little nitpicky. I liked the video though. Hopefully the game is awesome.
Which is why I didn't use a title like "Sonic Origins is RUINED" or something along those lines. I just found it to be a weird collection and release.
Ok... but this is the exact same thing mania did and nobody's complaining about that.
Then you must have been unaware of it. The game felt off until it was removed.
Honestly, the digital deluxe edition should have been one game AKA not exist at all why do I have to pay for character animations on the music menu?
Yeah, it should have been included in the base game.
The DLC seems kind of worthless I mean Island camera is a DLC come on guys
Seems like a feature that should be in the base game.
I got a sonic origins ad when I clicked on the video
Sonic origins (aka sonic mania but more classic features and other things)
Ok so i could have just played the mobile ports exept for sonic cd which wont have knuckles?
If you want. There's more to Origins, but if you just want the game, the ports all exist elsewhere... except 3 & Knuckles. AIR isn't official.
If it is, then there’s nothing to complain about
Basically, what you’re saying is “give me free stuff” because in your mind, this is just a product from an impersonal, faceless brand.
That’s also why stuff like knuckles in Sonic 1 can work, where you wouldn’t see stuff like that in other retro compilations using emulation, like Mega Man’s Legacy Collections (which are also great) or other Sega Genesis collections
So if it were simply a $45 base game that included all the extras, you would’ve preferred that as opposed to having the option to pay $40 to not have those things? Or you’re saying that the animations, 3D worlds, and extra music is worth $0.00?
@@bradenhogan2 40 dollars is already a lot of money for 4 retro games with some small changes, so yeah that extra stuff should have been in the base game
1:32 No they didn't. They simply didn't. There's no better proof of this than all the most technically difficult platformers like Meat Boy and Rain World totally forgoing lives. Indie developers quickly figured out life systems do nothing but hamper progression.
Classic Sonic's difficulty is nowhere near games like Super Meat Boy.
Sonic origins needs to be redone and no DRM. Or at the very least an open source drm so that people can see what it’s doing.
People have been able to bypass Denuvo and I'm sure Sega will remove it a year later. Doesn't make things better, but it is a thing that has happened.
He said "Why make a Base Version, then make us pay for DLC that's $5 more?"...
... To make us pay $5 more 🤷🏽♂️
How many times are Sega going to re-release the classic Sonic games? Wouldn't it be better to get a brand new classic Sonic game? Even Sonic Mania mashed the old zones in with only 3 new ones. Sega are also ashamed of Sonic's Mega Drive roots opting to go with the shitty remasters from now on.
I'd rather play the blocky pixelated original versions from the 90's.
And no physical version on a disc is a ground breaker for me.
Sonic 2 has been re-released once a year from 2018 to 2021. I doubt they're ashamed of their history.
@@GottaBeFrank Not the game itself but the remasters.
The remaster. It can still be purchased on steam, for now.

Limited lives are an outdated concept.
They don't make a game harder, they make it tedious.
I agree with everything else you said tho.
The main part of Sonic Origins has to be playing Sonic 3 and Knuckles after so long.
Yeah. It's the biggest selling point. Feels great to finally get it.
This might be a pass for me. I would buy this for S3&K alone but the way they are do,I feel around is just unnecessarily complicated
Woah. June 23rd is my birthday.

I will never encourage that. I would say to not buy it until the physical release.
0:45 sonic spinning off a spring in sonic 2 makes me nauseous
Why didn't they use the sprites from Sonic mania? All they did was just port them? Why not improve on the look of the game.
This is to accurately replicate the games, rather than make them look like Mania.
I'm gonna skip this collection. I've played all these to death as a kid on various platforms. This is for the new kids.
