    When I was growing up, we always had a wood & coal stove. It's such warm heat, which may sound weird to some people. But compared to electric heat, which starts out blowing cool/cold air, wood & coal is always toasty warm.
    I love the way you guys always present things in such a simple, understandable way. It makes it seem so doable.

    That stove looks really good and well designed. Wish they made them like that here in the UK. Your ash pan isn't going to spill all over the place like mine does and the handles aren't going to burn you like mine. Looks like yours actually works well, i am lucky if I can get mine to work. Cost me an arm and a leg too. My cowelling is rusting, your chimney looks very neat.

    I have a ds stove comfort max75 for about four years now. . Excellent stove I really like it over my old fisher wood stove. I burn wood in the fall and spring and coal all winter. Once a year you should remove the firebricks and vacuum out the back where the heat exchanger tubes run up and down. You would be surprised how much ash accumulates back there

      I just purchased the comfortmax, can you give me any tips on burning wood? do you just use the front air control for wood? And also my chimney is only around 200 degrees but the stove top runs about 700. Also does yours burn clean? I am still getting smoke out of the chimney

    Good vid, thanks for sharing! It is super important to keep the chimneys clean. Here in Alberta temperatures drop below 40°C,.. time to get ready.

    If you wrap a bit of electrical tape around the connectors between each section of chimney brush handle, you're less likely to lose part of it when you accidentally unscrew them turning the brush around inside the chimney.
    Ask me how I know that... 😆

    It was easier for me to remove a pipe from inside the furnace, remove the board and blanket, and then use a nylon brush and flexible/extentable poles with a drill that rotated a nylon brush which brought down the build up. I notice that most of the build up was at the beginning. No need to go up on the roof at this point. My furnace is only a year old so I didn't find a need to use a metal brush. Took me a about 45 minutes to get organized and pull that off with some help from youtube, the stove wood stove manual and figuring some things out on my own. Everyone sort of has their own technique based on their situation. This video was helpful despite using a slightly different method. It's alway good to see what other people do, just like he did. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you! All of a sudden my wood stove seems smothered and I think the baffles and inside stovepipe need cleaning. This is something my hubby always took care of. The outside chimney was just cleaned so I know it’s not that. Thankfully you can learn how to do so many things on UA-cam. Thanks for taking the time to show your tips and tricks. It’s so helpful. The top plate that goes into the top that you took out First has a gap for the flames to go up Do you push that back or pull it forward?

    Great video Kevin, I haven't used my fireplace in several years. I have a 97 year old neighbor that complained to me that it was keeping her indoors because it made her choke from the smoke.I have every right to keep using it but I just can't bear knowing that I am inconveniencing her that much so I quit using it. I feel like a chump because other neighbors keep using theirs and they hate her but I just don't have it in me to treat her that way. Maybe some day she will move and I can start enjoying my fireplace once again. Until then I just have to go to the swamp and have myself a campfire every now and then to pacify my desires. LOL

    When your chimney pipe is like his lined with metal on the inside you're not supposed to use a wire brush you're supposed to use a polybrush the wire brush will score the inside causing more creosote build-up and the possibility of a chimney fire.

    Great video, I watched your other video starting the coal fire. I am considering replacing my woodstove with this model. Does the stove burn clean when burning wood? Or does the chimney get pretty dirty when burning wood only? Thanks for any info!

    Nice video and so important to remind people to clean their chimneys/stovepipes! I hope everyone has smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, too!! One tip you might pass on is about cleaning the stove glass on the door. I'm told there are formulas you can buy for that purpose, but you can also just dip a wet rag or paper towel in some of the fine (not anything big that would scratch) ashes and scrub with them. Works great for us and who doesn't like using fewer chemicals and doing things frugally?! Keep up the great videos!

    Don’t forget that in the UK, for insurance, flues should be cleaned annually by a professional who gives you the required certificate for insurance purposes after the job has been done.

    Can you also clean the chimney from the room end instead of going up on the roof? I have a metal roof and am concerned it will get damaged if we climb up there.

    Did you know you can make lye with the wood ashes. Good for tanning, making soap etc.

    • @LivingTraditionsHomestead
      @LivingTraditionsHomestead  6 років тому

      Yes, we've looked into that. My understanding is that oak wood ashes are preferred for making lye. But, homemade lye is very unpredictable and using it to make soap may give inconsistent results.

    It is also very important to have your chimney inspected annually. At least make sure everything is code compliant, before you taking it into your own hands. The stove will tell you important clearance requirements. To ensure a structure fire will not will not take place from the appliance itself. The manufactured chimney pipe in your case will tell you the clearances needed as well. I am a chimney professional and just want everyone one to know its the clearance issues that cause chimney fires. Flue fires from lack of venting maintenance (sweepings) usually go unnoticed and do not sped. But structure chimney fires can start from inside. Not trying to sound like a know it all just care about peoples safety. Your sweeping protocols are a little out dated, but still affective. If you're interested I would look into rotary sweeping with a drill. It can be done from the bottom. very convenient because you can watch and control the dust.

      It is a DS Comfort Max 75. I am going to experiment this winter with cooking on it. I think I can use it like a slow cooker for chili, soups, and beans, but I don't think I could use it with frying pans to make eggs or things like that. So far, we've only kept our coffee hot on it. 😊

    My chimney is near the edge of my roof so it's at least 10'tall to get higher than the peak, and the pipe has two 45⁰ bends on the first floor. Do the pipes come apart easily and would the brush be able to go around those corners?

      It's been a couple years but I think it was about $1500. I have not found a coal delivery service. We burn wood most of the time. Around here Tractor Supply sells coal in the winter.

    I don’t live too far away from you. It sounded like the coal you received with your stove was a bonus incentive to purchase the stove. Can I ask where you purchased the stove?

    • @LivingTraditionsHomestead
      @LivingTraditionsHomestead  6 років тому +2

      We purchased it from Missouri Stove & Chimney out of Sparta. Yes, the coal was a bonus that came along with the stove. They did a great job installing everything and answering questions. The person we worked with named James.
