I'm going to post this whenever I see someone whining about AF 😆 Best camera I've ever used. Great vid, thanks! Re: 14-bit - It adds some range / depth at ISO 400 or lower. Once you're OVER 400, it doesn't really matter and you're better off in 12-bit for the added fps performance. Note that the ISO 400 cutoff is for Nikon - other cameras range from 200 to 640.
I switched and agree the eye AF is better… I forgot I switched it and was marveling at how well it was picking up the eyes and wondering if there was some sort of machine learning going on and then I remembered the recommendation and that I switched it. I have my U3 and the PSAM set to 12-Bit and U1 set to 14-bit. In fact, for U3 and PSAM I turned off all the different things that might cause the processor to bog down like vignette, distortion, diffraction, show settings in live view etc. etc. I also used the uncompressed 12-bit so that there was just one less thing to do with the file…
14 bit is more detail (shades of color) “dynamic range”, quite a bit more information too. Look 12 bit is fine for most of our stuff since a lot of it gets thrown out in post processing but dynamic range is what makes pictures in a pro camera blow away pictures from a phone. Your right I discovered that trick when I got my z6II on accident. I was looking too speed up my FPS in tracking and I turned it too 12 bit orJPEG and it absolutely made a difference during continuous autofocus and tracking.
12bit NEF for sports is great, thanks for the tip typically not looking for HDR type shots for fast moving things. Turn it back to 14bit if you're doing landscape, really helps when you're manipulating skies etc.
It is always great to take the items and ideas from others that work for yourself. The tape hack is great !!!!!!! I use back button focus for sure, but again to each his own. Thank you for sharing !!
Thanks for your video mate. I bought a Z6II last Friday and have shot thee shows with it so far. Coming from a D5, I've had a bit of a learning curve shooting circus, but it's performed pretty well. Cheers!
I’m glad I found this video. I started my photography journey two years ago, and I’m currently using the D500. I shoot motorcycle photos as well, especially action shots. I’ve been on the fence about picking up a Z6II for just about everything including action photography. So replacing my D500. However, I heard and seen reviews about how the Z6II wouldn’t be good for it, and I should stick to what I have or switch brands. After seeing this review I know I can do now as well! Great review, very helpful, and informative.
I have been chasing you for years Jasin Boland. i started following your work when you did the movie The Matrix and i have always wanted to be as good as you but watching this video and seeing that you are wearing a boston red sox cap?!?! that makes me like you even more lol. Anyway, love the videos my friend. keep em coming.
Good morning just used the setting you suggested on my Z6ll to photograph surfers. A big different from my previous settings. Do not see much of a difference from 14 bit to 12 bit after I edit in Lightroom. Thanks. Looking forward to the next firmware update in September and also for the Z9. Bob
Some absolutely cracking photography there Jasin! Thank you very much for sharing your tips, some really useful ones there. I love the tape hack, I will have to try that one, anything to make them wake up that little bit quicker 😁
Great video!!! I love your work. Thanks for all the great advice on your techniques and settings. I just recently got my Z6II and can't wait to try some of your tips. Cheers and bravo. I just hit the subscribe button to make sure I don't miss any future advice.
I’ve been wanting to upgrade from the current camera I have. I was researching the z6ii, and watched and read the camera has issues with tracking i watched your video, and it is obvious that your experience and expertise with the camera is very different than what i’ve been reading and seeing.
This video was very helpful for me, as I have seen many photographers write off the Z6 ii on sports and fast action. At the end of the day, the camera is a tool that the photographer should control, and not the other way around... a thought with which I 100% agree. Thank you very much for sharing your pro tips for fast action. Really enjoyed your shoot :)
Great stuff not sure I'm ready to get this close yet..... I've been using wide and small for shooting cars and bikes at my local track and find it great
Hey Jasin, good video on the Z6ii. I have a Z9 and D5, but am cautiously moving to completely mirrorless and wanted a third body for my sports photography. I had a lot of trepidation in buying a Z6ii based on many other videos that basically wrote it off as an action and sports camera. The settings you include here regarding 12-bit versus 14-bit, I haven't seen from anyone else. Thanks, I look forward to using my new Z6ii as a secondary sports camera when it comes in the mail in the next few days.
I have an air show coming up next weekend. Taking pictures of fast planes should be similar to shooting a bike in action. Would I use the same settings or do you think there's something different I should try?
Planes are so much bigger you should have no problems. Try the large rectangle area in the center. Having it central is more intuitive like using a sight or scope.
If you're photographing birds in flight, 1/1500 works the best. If you go slower, the pattern of the feathers on the bird's wing are blurred. But, I take your point on shooting slower for most subjects.
@@JasinBoland Believe it or not, I used to photograph seagulls in flight from a moving ferry with a Hasselblad 501 C/M and 350mm lens, at its maximum aperture of f/5.6. The feathers were always blurred when photographing with the leaf shutter maxed out at 1/500. But when I acquired a 203FE, I was able to go up to 1/2000, so I used the fastest shutter speed that would work at f/5.6, and still render some detail in the brightest feathers using Portra 400 NC. Based on the comments here, I probably could have stopped down to f/8 and used a slightly slower speed.
They sure will but not so responsive because the 2 has a different processor. There’s another video on here that is pretty much just Z6 settings but work for all Z cameras and most dslr.
Thank you for a good example. I applied your recommendations to my Z6 camera. Wonderfully everything went out
oh thats awesome!
Glad to see love for the Z6II. Hard to find these days. It’s a fantastic camera.
It’s a wonderful piece of kit. I certainly wouldn’t be using them on the film I do if they weren’t up to the task.
The ability of turning one way, then reverse and go the other, is amazing.
I always appreciate someone who explains why they do something. It’s very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks so much Ed, that's very cool of you to say!

Oh now that’s interesting l. Can’t imagine anyone shooting under 400 action anyhow so that justifies the move even more. Thank you!
I never knew that 12-bit resulted in faster AF! I’ve been shooting in 14-bit.
it's like a turbo charge!
