I got a full sponsorship from an engine builder in my 30's. I wasn't fast or won races. I was an ok intermediate rider at best. I asked him after a couple years why we still had a relationship and he said it was because I was a nice guy and that presented well on him. Not all sponsorships need to be for winning.

The problem is that it's all way too expensive. Beginning with the bike, gear, accessories, gas to riding areas/tracks and fees. My bike has been sitting in the garage for 2 years simply because I can't afford to burn half a tank of $5.50 gallon gas just to go ride.

Right plus paying for a place to ride plus gas to get there and back, that's the big difference between now and the 1980's when I rode we could ride right from the house and made homemade tracks in the nearest field (trespassing) there is no way my dad would have paid track fees or taken me to a track, If it had been the way it is now It would have been over, my dad would have sold my bike or not gotten one at all.

Go ride off road! Haven’t paid a track fee in years, but I’ve been riding 1-2 times a week on my old ‘08 yz125 for years now and I couldn’t be more stoked! #thedesertsrad

@@DirtBikes_MathGarden I've lived in some states where it's easy to find places to ride and some where it's difficult, I lived in Minnesota and I couldn't find anything other than the actual track where I had to pay and I was glad to have that option. But It was area where it was all farmers and I literally couldn't find a free spot without a long drive.
I was hoping to just find a field where I could make a homemade track.

The problem with amateur motocross is that they made it too expensive to compete. The four stroke mx bike did that.

FTR, not all corporate jobs are shitty. I'm not counting the minutes until the next moto because my job sucks. My (corporate) job allows my to ride, buy new bikes when i want/need, and enables me to do what I love. Moto and corp jobs go together quite nicely.

These tracks shutting down or turning into private training facilities is the beginning of the end for amateur MX. I can afford to ride after finding success in business at this point in my life, but I can’t find a place to ride within 2.5 hours anymore. My bike sits in my garage and it’s a bummer. Just not interested driving so far, 4-5 hrs round trip, just to fun ride.

Every hobby is expensive. You don't need to hit a race every weekend from the day you turn 5 to learn how to ride.
People are just nuts. Little kids wasting their childhood chasing dads dreams.
Let em ride.. get them in shape. Fundamentals till they are 12 to 14.. then start hitting some races. Yes they need to ride real tracks but not every weekend. Woods.. fields. Turn tracks. Rain Mudd. Sand. Snow. Enjoy life. It'll come.

As some of the guys down below have stated...There are several problems with the sport in MY eyes.
    1. The sport is too expensive. Even the weekend rider who wants to take 1 or 2 of his kids is paying several hundred dollars for a local DAY not weekend. Combine that with bikes MSRP 10k plus. gear is $300. Boots worth have $200-$700. That is just the beginning of the expenses we all know.
    2. IF you are blessed enough to race and go to bigger events to try and make something of yourself the odds are stacked. PPL like Defrancesco, Ciancarulo, Deegan, Barcia ect ect all have had rides since they were toddlers due to connections. 99% of ppl dont have that. No matter how good you are if you dont have connections or money it wont matter. You can see it at any event. Massive rigs for, most recently, Deegan with mechanics, suspension guys, motor guys..How is little johnny supposed to compete? I think outside support should be dialed back for amatuers.
    3. The majority of the sport is centralized to the CA and GA. There needs to be more accessibility to the midwest and all other areas. The more we reach out to get ppl on bikes and have good events at different tracks the better. Once again, little Johnny and his dad cant afford to drive 20 hrs to get to the closest qualifier.
this is just some problems but the majority is we have one of the most expensive sports for one that is not popular compared to others. Johnny can kick a ball or swing a bat for years on any level of teams for a fraction of the price of a moto career.

IMO amateurs should crack a crate open and race a stock bike.
No idea if these kids are racing a Star built bike, but they are training with the Star team and those kids get the best of the best as far as training and riding with legends!

Dirt bikes make you a much better person. They give a sense of direction and personal achievement that SO many people lack in today’s world. I work with young people that have no hobbies or motivation. Except social media and their phone. It’s crazy. All I wanted to do at their age was ride. And I did every chance I got. They just don’t understand what they’re missing.
