Can someone please just give John Waters a weekly talk show. No guests, just give him topics and let him go for an hour, it'll be the best show on the planet
Ildskalli No way should it just be half an hour, hell it should be as long as possible cos he tells great long stories. If you want proof of this just watch his stand up tour "This Filthy World" which is just brilliance
It's sad that John Waters is known primarily as a filmmaker but he's said that the reason he doesn't make movies anymore is that no one will give him the money to do it. So he just appears on talk shows, like Orson Welles did in his later years.
The motion picture industry has never been known for encouraging & funding art that won't produce immediate box office results. Any actor will tell you their most rewarding films are the "vanity projects" they did between their mass-appeal blockbusters.
If it makes you feel better. He actually is not sad about not making movies anymore. he's expressed in heaps of interviews how happy he is with what he is doing now :)
Joseph Scott Never said America hasn't done anything good. You made a list of good things but you ignore the horrible atrocities that have been committed inside and outside our country. What about slavery, genocide of the native people, Jim crow, Vietnam, Iraq, our country is comfortable invading and occupying countries that never attacked us, police killing unarmed people and not being held accountable, police bashing the heads of protestors, having the highest incarceration rate in the world, Goverment spying on citizens. I could go on all day. This country is better to live in than most but it's not a great country.
LMAO inventing shit doesn't make you great. I love all of the useless shit you put on there. What ever would we do without the safety pin or doorbell?!?
I wish I had looked into this man sooner. His sense of humour is AMAZING, his work is incredible, and he's endlessly entertaining to watch and listen to
He's just too uptight, same with Jay Leno. The only talk show host who could match wits with Waters is Letterman. BUT - I'd LOVE to see him on the View and the Talk.
That's a really strange statement that I totally agree with, although I'm not sure he'd have the same opinion since Trump has started carrying on about how much he likes nukes. Gay persecution or extinguishing all life on the planet? Mmmm...
Of course, by that logic you should stick with your cable provider / phone company / etc. regardless of what they do, because "no one cares" about a single client leaving. But I'm pretty sure people who decide to leave the country don't expect their (individual) absence to make a difference to _everyone else_. It's more about making a difference to _themselves_. And, if _enough_ people leave (just like if enough people switch to a different company), then it might have some broader influence.
RFC3514, leaving the country in the hopes that your absence will be noticed and will create change is a terrible plan. Staying and getting involved is the only way real change will happen.
Channel T - Did you read what I wrote? No one leaves "in the hopes that your absence will be noticed" - just like your cable company doesn't care if a single client leaves. That's false logic. People leave so _they_ notice the change in _their_ lives (and also because they prefer to contribute to a society or company that better reflects their values). This notion that people need to stay in the country where they were born forever is kind of medieval. The USA was founded by people who chose to _not_ stay in their country of birth. And that was in a time when travel was much harder than now. It's perfectly normal for someone who doesn't like the current climate in the USA to move somewhere else. Not only can that be an immediate improvement in their lives, but they might also prefer to see their taxes go to a social / political project that they agree with. Anyway, "real change" is _already_ happening; half the voters picked Trump, and their opinion is worth as much as the opinion of the ones that didn't. Sure, if you want (or _have to_ stay), get involved and try to change things, but there's nothing wrong with moving somewhere else - history is full of people who did just that, and achieved a lot more than they would have if they'd stayed in the same place for their entire lives. Do you also think that, if you're not happy with Comcast, you should stay a Comcast client and "get involved so real change will happen"? Especially if 50% of Comcast's clients were pulling in the opposite direction?
I was referring to the part where you said, "if enough people leave [...] then it might have some broader influence." But I understand your point better now, thanks for clarifying.
I had the pleasure of meeting John at his show when he was in Seattle doing his Christmas show. He autographed his book "Carsick" for me and I got a picture with him and shook his hand. I accomplished my dream of meeting him that night and still cannot believe I met him. Very nice man.
Oh my goodness, John Waters is truly hilarious. I had the pleasure of seeing his live tour one year, and laughed so much that every muscle hurt for days!
pizzapie08 the best quote I can remember from him is "Stop fucking stupid people, if you go home with somebody and they dont have books, dont fuck them!"
His two most accessible movies are Serial Mom and Pecker. Watch both! And like I said in an earlier comment, Shock Value is an astonishingly inspiring book. Worth reading and re-reading.
And this is said by someone who’s made X/NC-17 rated films that’s so graphic that it’d make any normal person faint. John Waters is hilarious. SERIAL MOM and CECIL B. DEMENTED are both great, absolutely hilarious films. A DIRTY SHAME shouldn’t have been shot in the foot because of its NC-17 classification. I hope he keeps making more outrageous stuff!
I first saw "Pink Flamingos" as a graduate student in Wisconsin maybe a year after it was made, before it went national and became a cult film. Only John Waters could have made that film. The parts of the film that didn't hit you in the face, in a way were very much like this interview. "Well Miss Sandstone, Miss Sandy Sandstone, I guess there are just two kind of people in this world. My kind of people and a**holes...."
No, no, don't do anything to Lincoln, Roosevelt, Washington, Cecil B. DeMille, and whoever else is up there, sculpted into the mountain. Just add John Water's head to them. That whole memorial is so ridiculous anyway, it's not going away as long as it makes money, and it's so outrageous that John belongs there.
John Waters is a class act. Unlike Hunter Thompson, who looked like a decent guy, talked a good talk, then would snort a line of coke, light up a joint, sip some whiskey and say 'we're all doomed anyways'. John comes out weirdly classy, but then his friendly exuberance wins you over, and then he'll describe what it must've been like spending a night at Michael Jackson's Neverland, and as you're laughing - you want John removed from the premises never to return. Just brilliantly American IMHO.
Oh, yeah! I can just see John Waters bringing back a "Plato's Retreat" kind of club to NYC & calling it, "Flip Flop!" Perfect! Please, bring it on! ;-)
What gets lost, about this guy is how amazingly kind and thoughtful he is, not only did Patty Hearst, give him the sunglasses she was arrested wearing, she also claimed, she would do "anything for him." which seems to be a common theme, of those who have worked with him.
John Waters is : Iconic, underrated, visionary Genius of a Renaissance Man, deserving to be at the helm of modern day directorialship. He’s proven to have full on concepts of entertaining and he really hits all the check marks of a Bonafide Icon. We need more gay and lbtq2 characters on television !!!
I own a copy of pink flamingos and in the dvd extras there are reactions from people saying things like he’s got his finger on the pulse of America firmly up its ass
I'm loving everyone's comments so much. Great to see so many people appreciating just how amazing John Waters is. Colbert couldn't even keep up with him. Haha
John Waters’ apartment was directly above mine back in the 80s. As a professional trombonist, I practiced constantly. One day my sister Diana and I got in the elevator and John was standing in the corner. “Hi Mr. Waters, I’m the guy who lives in 605, directly below you”. He looked at me, my trombone gig bag, then back at me. “Yeah, I know”, he said in a withering tone. He moved out shortly after Hairspray made it big.
Can someone please just give John Waters a weekly talk show. No guests, just give him topics and let him go for an hour, it'll be the best show on the planet
Totally agree, except it should be only half an hour. Keep it short and sweet :D
Or at the very least a podcast!
I would watch that!
best idea ever.
Ildskalli No way should it just be half an hour, hell it should be as long as possible cos he tells great long stories. If you want proof of this just watch his stand up tour "This Filthy World" which is just brilliance
Dear Netflix, please give John his own hosting gig. (And don't censor him!)
- Sincerely, The World
violetxoxox Netflix wouldn't censor people!
violetxoxox didn’t they already give one 🧐
Megan May really?
If you see what happened to Norm Macdonald's show when it went to Netflix.... Doesn't give you much hope!!
*Throws money at screen*
I love how John will say "controversial" things in such a polite, classy tone.
RoPiDe oh my dear lord... Yesssssss. I just wanna watch them take afternoon tea together.
@@RoPiDe Add the surviving Monty Python members into the mix and it will be glorious.
It’s funny to me that in the episode of the simpsons he was in he had to tell them that the slur that rhymes with bag is a slur
Met this man about a year ago at the Cinema I work at. He's immensely charming and polite. He reminds me of an X-rated version of Vincent Price.
Austin Faulds That is a perfect description!
neuralmute I'm not even gay, and I would watch that.
*****
Hell, who *wouldn't*?!?
He's a like able version of a creepy uncle
Austin Faulds Great description! Sums him up perfectly.
It's sad that John Waters is known primarily as a filmmaker but he's said that the reason he doesn't make movies anymore is that no one will give him the money to do it. So he just appears on talk shows, like Orson Welles did in his later years.
He's written several books since his last movie and has museum exhibits. He also been doing his comedy tour for a few years. His genius doesn't stop.
Once I’ll get rich I’ll fund his movies! That’ll be the day...
The motion picture industry has never been known for encouraging & funding art that won't produce immediate box office results. Any actor will tell you their most rewarding films are the "vanity projects" they did between their mass-appeal blockbusters.
If it makes you feel better. He actually is not sad about not making movies anymore. he's expressed in heaps of interviews

I have a Pink Flamingos poster that is signed by John and Mink Stole. It is my most valued possession.
I'm jealous
I'm jealous too! I guess that John Hammond guy who doesn't get it would get a boner looking at his autographed Journey album
Oh yeah ❤️
God bless you, John Waters. You prove that America was already great.
ErisRising America has never been great.
msl 2015 Jesus, could you be any more trite and tedious? Note: That isn't a challenge to do so.
Joseph Scott Never said America hasn't done anything good. You made a list of good things but you ignore the horrible atrocities that have been committed inside and outside our country. Fuck yeah.
LMAO inventing shit doesn't make you great.
I love all of the useless shit you put on there.
What ever would we do without the safety pin or doorbell?!?
His book Shock Value is still one of the best books about being creative ever written. Always great to see him interviewed.
That interview was TOO short! I could listen to John Waters talk all day!!
You know they cut a lot of it out. I mean, they must have.
It seems Colbert interviews are VERY short. Read Waters' "Carsick" if you haven't. It's literally just a book of him telling stories, I loved it.
I bought a copy of Carsick almost by accident, and it was a really fun read. The guy can write.
I freaking love John Waters. He is totally incapable of being boring.
My sister-in-law and were talking about him and his movies and how the characters are so weird that they’re compelling
I wish I had looked into this man sooner. His sense of humour is AMAZING, his work is incredible, and he's endlessly entertaining to watch and listen to
Colbert couldn't keep up and looked speechless the entire time!
He's just too uptight, same with Jay Leno. The only talk show host who could match wits with Waters is Letterman. BUT - I'd LOVE to see him on the View and the Talk.
If John Waters says we can survive Trump then i believe him.
That's a really strange statement that I totally agree with, although I'm not sure he'd have the same opinion since Trump has started carrying on about how much he likes nukes. Gay persecution or extinguishing all life on the planet? Mmmm...
I would like to watch a "Trump" movie directed by John hahahahaha
This dude just burst with positive, feel-good energy
100,000 people would disagree if they were still alive.
He didn't say WE can, he said HE can; He's rich.
Please never die Mr. Waters. You're a gift.
We should perfect that keeping heads alive technology in futurama
ok beastiality stan
How the fuck is John Waters 70 years old
'I'm leaving the country' "Go ahead, no one cares" 😂

"Bossy Bottom" lmao and did anyone else notice them playing day tripper at the end?

Best Simpsons guest character.
John Waters is the real Stefon
Mikulak25 yes yes yes yes yes
Mikulak25 'This year's most dangerous toy is Bütch. It's got everything: movie merch, real charging action, and child endangerment'
spot on sir
would have loved to see a sketch with both of them
No, Stefon is dumb and bad at his job. John Waters is a genius.
John Waters needs to be doing more stuff. We fucking need him right now.
Karloss Coletti and we need him fucking, right now
So right! I wished he's make another feature film and then a stand-up tour!
It's camp! The tragically ludicrous? The ludicrously tragic?

Oh, like when a clown dies!
You don't get any cactus candy, no. That would be cruel, have a teensy piece
He prefers the company of men!
Ultra-suede is a miracle. This is just good timing.
Thank you John Waters
Only 5 minutes for the legend that is John Waters? For shame!

John Waters is a national treasure.

Kit Palmer nah, he belongs to us in Baltimore!
He's such a gem
When they told me John was going on with a spattered jacket, I thought...
What did you think? Splattered with chicken?
Oh my goodness, John Waters is truly hilarious. I had the pleasure of seeing his live tour one year, and laughed so much that every muscle hurt for days!

I wonder if it's ready.
I choked laughing with this guy, omg I need to see more of him talking and Colbert reactiong

+Number Fortyseven: Ouch!
one of the best segments on this show thus far.
I don't know who this man is but I find him fascinating.
pizzapie08 John Waters is an amazingly funny person and the writer/director in a great many movies like Colbert said, Crybaby is my favorite.
pizzapie08 read his book Shock Value
pizzapie08 the best quote I can remember from him is "Stop fucking stupid people, if you go home with somebody and they dont have books, dont fuck them!"

His two most accessible movies are Serial Mom and Pecker. Watch both! And like I said in an earlier comment, Shock Value is an astonishingly inspiring book. Worth reading and re-reading.
Such a great guy, really. He had a Van Gogh's Starry Night type of suit when he came to my city.
Omg Colbert's face at 5:22 XD
And THAT'S how you finish a network interview! Well done, J.W.!

I went to high school with Mike Pence in Columbus, Indiana. John has a good reason to be very afraid of Pence. John is one smart man.
Too short! - Three segments minimum with John! What about his hitch hiking adventure? Stephen!
