- This is the new McLaren 620R - the closest thing to a GT4 race car...for the road! At 620ps and just 1280kg the new McLaren 620R is the perfect track day car but by far - the biggest USP of this supercar is the addition of slick tyres available to fit without the need to re-setup the car for them - track day dreams!

It also switches from right-hand drive to left-hand drive when you get to the track!
And colour too - I was driving an Orange car on track 😂

I've really started to enjoy this channel, it gives a real human perspective on being with the car. Whilst the other car channels like carfection give an amazing high end production, it can feel i bit sanitised occasionally, rather this platform feels very personable, I also enjoy the fact that this gentleman can point out the wheat from the chaff very well, for instance I never knew that slick tires needed a special set up, and that the scope at the top of the car improves the internal noise. The one thing I would like to know about the car is if the brembo brakes from the senna could be specified like the 765LT.
The outstanding grip is tossing those passenger harnesses around like crazy. Fantastic video, feel like you're there in the car!!
McLaren purist cars are just something else. Time and time again, they just outdo themselves.

Just back from the Nordschleife in my 600LT , and had some lessons with Apex, took a fast lap in the 620R with Robert Mitchell , grip down force levels are incredible. See Apex face book for details, you won’t regret it 😁

On the GT4 vs the Senna, grip is addictive the slicks make a huge difference.

Maybe a temp cargo net safety option.? A snap in points for your side windows to allow for that?
You are a great driver James. When is the next Caterham race? I like the 620R but it comes out around the same time as the 765LT and the Pista and GT2RS being out. I mean this thing is a interesting comparison to the GT3RS

570 GT4?
Senna?
GT2/3RS?

You forgot to mention the manually adjustable suspension that really let's you dial in the car to each track. It's a true track car in that sense.
Now the league is complete. 620R, GT2RS, PISTA, AMG GT BLACK SERIES
Could the 765lt be thrown in there as well?

The best feature of the car seems to be it’s color changing paint... it start white with orange highlights, then switches to orange with white and black highlights, then to all black, and back to white again!
When is the 765lt first drive coming? The anticipation is real, maybe not totally for the car. But if it makes you respond anything like that 675lt did, it will be a great video. So has a lot to live up to! Love from Australia
Amazing to see the G forces throwing the seatbelts around. Would have been great to have a GoPro view of your speedo. Suggestion for a great UA-cam video, can you arrange a track day with the top car UA-camrs, Shmee in his Senna, you in the 620R, plus a couple of Ferrari’s to add to the spice.
btw - another advantage of this car is that the suspension can be adjusted in multiple ways based on the track you want to drive on :) that's also an important feature of the 620R that I think you may have forgotten to mention

In New Zealand you're allowed to use DOT approved race slicks on the road everyday, so we do, not because of our certification process, thats for fully modified cars on the road, just normal, you wanna be here if you drive, love your work JWW, chow

Dont know why many ppl and owners don’t get the whole 620r and 600lt purpose so here it is from an owner of 600 and gt4. Tldr: two cars with different purposes end of story.
The 600lt is based on a sports car to be a track focused FUN car. Alot of people forget that “sports series” from Mclaren is about pure and fun instead of chasing only speed, even though they are fast. You see the cool upwards exhausts and all the sliding in the reveal, this is a car that cares more about driver emotion and senses, different from super series and different from the 570 gt4 racecar. I enjoy mine as much on the canyons and chasing gt3s on track. I also think the 600lt is a more unique car based on the exhausts alone, if you optioned the roof scoop you have one of the best driving experiences in a car with the increased turbo sound and unique LT shift crackles.
The 620r is based off the 570 gt4 racecar and is basically a racecar that you can drive on the street. Would you really drive this on the street most of the time? Prob not, and coming from a track enthusiast, i transport all my super track dedicated cars to the track to save myself the pain and worry of driving a racecar on the road. The 620r is for those wanting to chase lap times and want something dedicated to track.
Comparison wise, on track you won’t see a huge difference between a 600 and a 620r unless you put slicks on. The 620r is more stable especially on higher speed tracks due to downforce but 600lt is a more fun car to drive in all occasions. It is a question of faster vs fun+fast. And if you are this hardcore for track, buy an actual racecar, any actual racecar feel completely different than any streetable car. I may be kind of hard on the 620r but the car didnt impress me as the 600 did in the reveal, especially to hardcore track guys who already own racecars. The unique part of 620r is that it is a streetable racecar, but 600lt offers so much more.

Unfortunately 620R comes with the open differential (just like all other road legal McLarens). The 570S GT4 uses LSD due to regulations and it provides more grip. So, 620R has some room for improvements.

But surely there’s one huge flaw with this car. How do you transport your slicks to the track? Sorry but much as I’d like to I’m struggling to see the point of this car. Surely towing something like a Radical to the track makes way more sense?
Chuck them in the back of the Cullinan and have Jeeves follow you to the track.

Its a why would McLaren build the 600LT and 620r one or the other would of been good. They just compete against each other. Great vid never the less

Does the 620R share the track suspension of the gt4 car? Brilliant idea to set up the car so it can run slicks. So many of these hardcore track hypercars are ruined by having to use a road tire. Look at the senna. A track car with crazy aero but suffers from terminal understeer partly due to the fact it has skinny front road tires.
On par with gt3rs? Love watching the passenger seat belts flailing

Mclaren needs a new exhaust note
It's does have quite an annoying drone to it after awhile..
I wish they used a cross-plane crank in the sport series (570) and a flat plane crank in the super/ultimate series (720/Senna). The lack of powertrain diversity is really obnoxious.
A Ferrari owner can own an F8 Tributo and an 812 Superfast and will never get bored because of how differently the cars go about executing their performance. I can't help but think a 720/765 owner would really struggle to find reasons to own a 570/600/620 McLaren. 😕
Where are the slicks going to go on your way to a track??, might as well get a track car like a radical RXC, using a trailer and van, alot more fun and will beat the 620R around the track
A lap time comparison between road and slick tyres on the track would have been informative. 0.1 of a second?

One of these 620r's was recently smuggled here in the philippines it was misdeclared as a cayman to avoid paying higher import taxes it almost got bulldozed as they always do to smuggled luxury cars here but they changed their minds and it will be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to Covid-19 response fund "hopefully" :D

Seems a bit odd designing a car to drive to a track day, when the intention is to swap to slicks. Presumably you need another vehicle for the spare wheels and tyres, which may as well be a tow car and trailer in which case you don't need the car to be road legal.

So this, this is the McLaren that was confiscated by the customs in our country (Philippines), it was confiscated cuz the owner named it a cayman on the tax paper or something idk, but i do hope it doesn't get destroyed by our local government

Coz the car itself is full carbon and it's size is similar to the Cayman, also it is manual gearbox so it shred of the weight and the engine itself is also very lightweight
