  • My girlfriend, Alex, and I attempted to thru-hike the 42 mile Tecumseh Trail in Indiana. We started NOBO at the official end of the trail which is located in a remote area of Brown County forest near Monroe Reservoir, just south of S.R. 46 near Crooked Creek Road. Our goal was to finish at the official start of the trail at Morgan-Monroe State Forest Headquarters. We started our hike on 2/28/2019.
    Thanks to Hoosier Hikers Council.

The object at 7:10 is a crinoid. It's a fossilized prehistoric plant.
    Awesome video, BTW!

Hi Ben and Alex, One of the best Tecumseh Thru hike videos I have seen. You truly captured the spirit of the trail that we helped build and continue to maintain. As you can see, the winter, the invasive that kills the trees and the logging cause myriad problems with keeping the trail in good condition. Sometimes it's an overwhelming challenge but the HHC trail adopters and the maintainers try to keep up with it. Bonnie

Glad you enjoyed it. We had a great time out there and were very impressed with the work that HHC has done on the TT!!!

I enjoyed your video, especially that you mixed in some close ups and still type shots. At 7:19 You found a crinoid! I am so jealous! Congrats to you. At 10:35 American Gothic, love it!

Nice work. You make enjoyable hiking videos. This one was kinda in my Hiking style. Midwest wood's, quiet, very little talking, just taking in the outdoors and enjoying it. Thanks for sharing and I've got another trail on my radar now. Happy trails man 👍😎

How was the water for consumption? OK to filter? I get a little nervous about Midwest ground water when it is an agricultural area. The runoff tends to be heavy with chemicals from fertilizers, pesticides, etc. It looks as though the route was predominantly through forested areas though, but noticed at the beginning some farms. Any issues?

No issues with water. We try to avoid runoff areas and use a Sawyer Squeeze.

Welcome to my area Ben. So you guys went south to north? Very nice. Hope the logging wasn’t too bad. Was a few years ago when I did this one

Hey! Yes we hiked south to north. Some of the best nature I've experienced in Indiana. Crystal clear streams. We thought it was a great trail overall!

This trail has been incorporated into the greater Knobstone Hiking Trail. The total length of the Knobstone is now about 150 miles. www.knobstonehikingtrail.org/150-mile-kht/tecumseh-trail-section/

Nice video. I live in southern Illinois and have done the River to River 3 times. I'm looking at hiking Tecumseh this spring. Did you find it to be well marked even with the reroutes? Any tips? Thanks!

Hey thanks. I've enjoyed your videos on the R2R. I think the Tecumseh is well marked. I used their official map and my Gaia app. We didn't have any major navigation issues. Yellowwood is a nice campground and the shelters along the way are nice. Hang your pack and food at the shelters. Hit up Mother Bears in Bloomington for some post hike pizza.

Enjoyed the video. My kids and I have been section hiking the Tecumseh trail together. They've enjoyed what they did so far. You should check us out to see what its like doing these trails with kids. Again enjoyed the memories.

That cool plant at 8:11 looks like a Fan Clubmoss. Very rare because it was over-harvested for Christmas greenery. But maybe the coolest thing is that its spores are used to create pyrotechnic flashes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diphasiastrum_digitatum

    Hi Ben. Another nice movie...
I was impressed with the scenery in Indiana!
    Comments:
    - Two shelters! The first one, which appears to be under construction, looked really nice, and a bit deeper than the ones I see on the AT.
    - Re-routes: I assume these were because of downed trees or those that appeared ready to fall (that is, re-route for safety sake)
    - The large rock "overhang/ridge": That was impressive. It appeared to be all one large rock (vs. several large ones that made up a "ridge"). It appeared it could have been used as an emergency shelter, and if flat enough in places, a regular shelter.
    - The trail appeared to be well-marked, even along roads (?)
    Question:
    - I need some good gloves for hiking when cold and wet. It appeared the outside of your gloves were "waterproof"? Do you have any recommendations?
I look forward to more hiking movies from you!
As info, I'm documenting my section hikes on the AT. I have a playlist on my channel that shows (in a lot of detail) each section I've hiked thus far. Lord willing, this year (2020) I will be going back to where I left off in 2019 (Harper's Ferry, WVa) and hiking through Maryland and Pennsylvania.
    God Bless...

The reroutes are mostly due to logging from what I've heard. It's well marked though. For cold weather, I'd recommend a fleece or wool glove for insulation and then a mitten shell to waterproof it. I like the Outdoor Research shells for outer protection, then Mountain Hardwware fleece gloves or Seirus softshell gloves for inner insulation.

Here's some of what I had. Zpacks Duplex, MLD Prophet, Enlightened Equipment Enigma 20 Degree, Thermarest Neoair Xlite, Sea to Summit pillow, Sawyer Squeeze, Toaks 650 pot, BRS stove, Altra Lone Peak Mid RSM shoes, Darn Tough socks, Monoprice carbon poles, Opsack food storage. Let me know if you have more specific gear questions.

Ben Hikes, thank you. If you’ve had any issues with your gear, that would be helpful.
I’m always looking to lighten and improve my hiking & camping gear.
      Thanks again.
