Thank you Sister and respected guests. I am one who, almost a year ago, left my local OCA parish, beloved parish family and pastor because of Synodal silence about the war. It has been a difficult and heartbreaking thing for me, but God gives me grace. I am profoundly disturbed that men in power in the Church (and they are all men) can watch the slaughter going on in Ukraine and engineer platitudes and silence to maintain their positions. How can this be?? I am so grateful to you, and to IOTA for shedding light and speaking clearly.
BTW I go to a Synodal parish where the FBI posted in Russian, contact info for Russians being threatened because of the war. Next to it a poster announcing a benefit concert for Ukranian war victims.

Christ is risen! Thank you Sister Vassa for broaching the very difficult topic of the place of human rights and personal freedom, which we typify as ‘Western civilizational values’ in the face of a global Orthodox culture that has so far not at all addressed them. We usually hear something along the lines of, “there is no mention of human rights in the Bible,” or, “we have perfect freedom from death and sin in Christ so there is no need of discussing contemporary notions of rights and freedom, which are mostly delusions anyhow.” Personally I find the default piety of traditionalism, which devalues Western civilization as irrelevant or toxic, to be unsatisfactory. Orthodox teachers, monastics and thinkers absolutely must grapple with contemporary culture, or our churches will be known as refuges for those who won’t do that work, that is they will be solely bastions of conservatism with no means of addressing culture.
Repent of your disobedience, you evildoer! Vassa Larin’s statements on homosexuality, patriarch Kiril, are truly horrible to hear and despicable to promote publicly. Stop disrespecting the church and spitting on truth and all that is good with your corruption and filth. If only there were anything that could be said in your defense sister Vassa. There is no such thing.
Question: Is there any sense in which an invader in war could be justified. Or is war only justified in self defense? Also how do we define these terms: Someone could attack after being threatened in some way. Thank you.

Why cannot we, o good Lord, rule the houses of our souls? Why cannot we forget our pride by shining forgiveness on the world? Why do we need so many canons, so many rules, so many fights, so many lies? O, come and conquer us with Your love And rule forever And be Yourself the only Rule.
Have you watched interview of bischop Shevkunov with Sobchak? This prominent figure of Russian Orthodoxy tells that the war was unavoidable, that from 1950s there were prophecies about the war between RF en Ukraine. His arguments are devoid of any rationale, take a look
Yes. It is quite difficult to watch, because he is so helpless theologically. He tries to explain everything through fatalism, as if human choices and decisions have nothing to do with the suffering that has been caused by them. Of course he hints at "third parties" that caused everything, but Russian human beings have no responsibility for any of it. He seems to say that the war was inevitable, because of something some "elders" said. (Forget about what Christ said, what the Bible says, what basic common sense says.) He also says that in the Church "we have an institution, of elders," whom he calls prophets. I never heard of the "institution" of elders in the Orthodox Church. But he proclaims this, as if it is a thing.

Hello - subbed 11/3/23
Question: Is there any sense in which an invader in war could be justified. Or is war only justified in self defense?
Also how do we define these terms: Someone could attack after being threatened in some way.
Thank you.
Waging war against a civilian population is not "justified" according to all laws, both human and divine ones.

O, come and conquer us with Your love
And rule forever
And be Yourself the only Rule.
Thank you for your important correction on "oikonomia."
