I was having a discussion with a friend when we realized that depending on which half of Marathon Man a person prefers, it actually reveals a lot about their personality. The first part of the film seems designed more to please idealistic individuals, people desperately hoping to lead a life that ends up mattering, whereas the second half of the film seems more geared towards those who are pragmatic realists. The dichotomy which emerges is basically between the dream of what you’d like your life to be, as opposed to the disturbing, underlying reality, that nothing is as it first appears and that a person’s false assumptions may leave them entirely unprepared to resist those more ruthless than themselves.

Albeit nithing graphic is shown during the torture scene, Dustin Hoffman's scream is so real it goes right through you, making it so effective.
And we’ve all had a cavity or bad toothache and know how painful it would be to touch that pulp!
I love it when the algorithm throws me a bone. I just watched this video and the Taxi Driver video about easy Andy. Awesome. I've been really early to a few other media criticism or film criticism channels and I have watched some of them grow from nothing to very large channels. I think the key is to continue on with ylour own personal style. Good movies deserve good criticism.😊

Thanks for your kind note. I was worried that viewers might enjoy both halves equally and thus the argument might not work as well. I guess I just wanted to create a video that was a little more personal for once. We had had this insight and I wanted to share, even though I knew that most people probably don't naturally bisect a film in this way. In any event, thank you for your note.
Goldman was the professionals’ professional as a screenwriter. His ‘Adventures in the Screen Trade’ still holds true for the film business.
Elsa does care about Babe by the end. I dont see why Doc didnt give Babe more information. He's actually put him at more risk without that information.
3rd conclusion is just enjoy life as it is, be grateful for the good times and learn how to cope with the difficult times because nothing is certain.

Thanks for this! Not enough videos on this one it’s really great. Interesting take, I definitely picked up on a clear distinction between the first and second half but I was more keyed in on that from a writing perspective. I think the first half of this film might have some of the most seamless exposition ever done. It has some noticeable exposition as well no doubt but this film should be used as an example more often when discussing the notion of a scene accomplishing several things at once. It seems like there’s always something going on to capture my interest or build upon an intrigue from a previous scene. For me the only thing that ever took me out of it is the notion that Zelle would take it upon himself to go to the diamond district to find out the value. And the fact that he runs into two holocaust survivors who recognize him is a little much. It’s a nitpick but for me that’s what distinguishes the halves, the first half grounds itself beautifully and the introduction of the secret agent aspects works because of that but there’s something about the last 20 minutes that feel like a bit of a stretch. The reality laid down in the first half is almost betrayed a little bit at the tail end and it sorta makes the larger than life components of the plot (such as the “inbetween the fbi and cia” secret agents) stick out for me a little more and for me that’s why the end isn’t quite as good. It calls attention to itself whereas the rest of the film feels grounded enough to really invest and indulge in the idealism you speak of. To be clear I still think this is a great film and definitely one of the best thrillers of the 70’s.

The 70's could be considered Hollywood's second golden age.
i like the whole film, but i think i prefer the second half. Talking about two films in one you might want to talk about Looper and The Place Beyond the Pines. Although they are obviously not in the same league. Pines might become a cult classic in the future.
I'm pretty sure after the film ended, Babe ended up in prison for the rest of his life.
