Abacha Was Not a Criminal, His Death Was Shocking, Says Right-hand Man General Jeremiah Useni

  • We step into the archives to take a look back at the five-year rule of #GeneralSaniAbacha, through the eyes of the second most senior officer in the Nigerian army at the time, Lt. #GeneralJeremiahUseni, said to be the most powerful man in the land after General Abacha himself. But then #GeneralAbacha died suddenly in 1998, and #JeremiahUseni fell dramatically from the opulence of power and influence. It was a bitter end for the man who waxed stronger and lasted longer than most Nigerian army officers - and who was often described as #Abacha's alter ego, his most intimate and trusted friend with whom he ruled Nigeria with an iron grip...So how has he evolved since the end of the heady days of the Abacha regime?

Precisely what Abacha and the rest of our Head of States warned us about, are the things that we are experiencing today.
Rouge politicians that exist in a bubble without a care in the world about the general public.
Civilian rule on our continent is synonyms to something straight out of a horror movie.
They kept saying this, these people pushing for a transition don't have a legit plan for the betterment of the populous. There are ulterior motives at play.
Granted at the time, noone was hearing that, our thing was, get out the way and let's get this civilian government started.
Hindsight is a great thing, how i wish there was something similar to referendum whereby both arguments may be heard and the people could have more of an educated opinion, sadly, that didn't happen.

I was young and a keen follower of african politics during that time. I remember those time as one of toughest times in nigerian politics and world in general.
Civil wars, heavy-handed military dominance punctuated by series of coup detats was an order of the day. presidential orders for people to stay in their houses beyond certain times was not unusual. Thanks, a lot has now changed at least for many of African countries and across the world.
For some of us who were following Nigeria's history from outside borders and mostly thru western media, we viewed this man just like a bunch of other dictators found in those times. In fact, i could well recall that many celebrated after news of his sudden demise came out.
His notoriety was affirmed when he sanctioned the killing of famous environmentalists ken sarowiwa, who was hanged despite pleas from around the globe for his acquittal.
That [killing of sarowiwa] will go down to be lowest point in Abacha's history. sadly, they are now all gone. the lesson is let's be humble & kind to one another, we are all passing in this world, no one lives forever. RIP Abacha & sarowiwa.

My due respect to the interviewer of Arise television, Mr Charles Aniogulo. During this interview his guest and the former rtd Lt.general in the army, the former minister for the federal capital territory, Jeremiah Oseni said that he was a northerner which i totally rejected. The first military coup of January 1966 carried out by the top igbo military officers was mainly targeted against the northern army officers but rtd, Ltd.general Jeremiah Oseni was not a northerner. He is from the langtan tribe like the former military head of state General Yakubu Gowon. He should not claimed that he was from the north. The Benue state and Jos Plaeteu state are parts of the Middle belt in Nigeria. Again, during this interviewed by Mr Charles Aniogolu that he was not chosen to be the next military head of state after the demised of the former late military head of state General Sani Abacha because he was not a Muslim from the northerner religion. Very unfortunate, the former minister of the federal capital territory, Rtr.general Jeremiah Oseni made mentioned that he was a northerner at the beginning of this interviewed. But he has lost his mind with senses to have told Mr Charles Aniogolu the reason why he was not a military officer successor to the late head of state General Sani Abacha was that he was not a northerner. Perhaps, he should go for more medical tests and check up.

That was the man, a common military driver on Major-General JTU Aguiyi-Ironsi's contingent, who drove the Landrover that was used to torture and drag the Supreme Commander's body on the road -- despite the fact that Ironsi was responsible for truncating and quashing the Nzeogwu/Ifeajuna coup. Alleged Christian Jeremiah Useni confessed that they didn't touch Ironsi during the Northern portion of his nationwide tour because, in his words, "we didn't want the bullets grazing any of the emirs".
He rose in the militics, by sticks and carrots, on account of his pivotal role in the murder of his boss. The self-acclaimed "Sardauna of Plateau" [a monumental insult to, and belittling of, the real Sardauna of Sokoto] unsuccessfully put himself forward as a successor to his kleptocrat-in-arms Mr inSane(nni) Lootobacha GSARS (Grand Sanctioned Armed Robber of the State) after his demise while on top of Indian prostitute(s). The current political system needs to be scraped and there needs to be a swearing in of a brand new transitional government that's sole purpose of existence is to usher in a fit-for-purpose political system that caters exclusively to the people of Nigeria; period.

Arise News, pls I am not sure that Useni was senior to Diya. Both Diya and Useni were governors and Brigadiers under General Buhari, although Diya was in detention.
Useni is a remorseless vilain for alleging that the 1966 coup was purely Igbo coup and that Ojukwu approved of it. The world knows that General Ironsi and Col Ojukwu foiled d coup. Useni as Lieutenant at the time could have taken part in d January coup bec the officers and troops used by Nzeogwu to execute the coup in Kaduna were northerners. Other officers who were non Igbos also participated in executing d coup elsewhere in Lagos. Useni is unintelligent, and it shows. Thank God his people are seeing what the Igbos saw years ago.
