  • Time! Along with Life and Creation, its one of the 3 fundamental forces of the Bionicle universe, but despite the massive world-building in the Bionicle story, how time is measured in-universe has never been fully defined.
In this investigation, we try to figure out just how the beings of the Bionicle world define time in their everyday lives, and see how it is different to the methods we are used to here on Earth.
New Bionicle Science investigations every month, what part of Bionicle lore do you want to see investigated next? Give your suggestions in the comments below!

God I love these videos! Not only bonkle lore but also human lore too! This was incredibly interesting, and I loved learning more about how we developed our own number system, as it really shows how ingenious ancient peoples were. And the beautiful coincidence of the 4 fingered Glatorian sets was brilliant! As was that cool Easter Egg with the telescope, I never knew that!
One thing that I found interesting in regards to this, was I remember that one of the Toa Mahri teaser promos said they had "24 hours to complete their mission" (before Mata Nui dies) and its clear this was meant to communicate to human audiences that they had only 1 (Earth) day left. Obviously we can't take the text in a promo as canon, but I do find it interesting, especially in discussions of how long certain events in story took place.
This may also provide insight into the cultural significance of the number 6 in their culture, since the square root of 36 is 6!
Oh, and its funny about the number system, because I saw it pointed out recently, that despite using base 10, the way their number system is written it would make sense that they use base 6, since the pattern of the lines in the circle repeats itself after 6. All very interesting!

Brilliant! Beautiful! Brilliantly beautiful! I think you have a real talent for explaining things like this. Perhaps when you are done with Bionicle maybe branch out into some other SiFi? The more you do from other series you may even be able to make videos on how they often or don't often overlap. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I love the conclusions you came to about the magnan culture using base 6 based on the lore. I never thought about how the agori hands having 3 fingers and a thumb would influence how they count, but it totally makes sense. I wonder if this would affect how they create music as well. Western music is written using an octave (which is just the notes frequency x2 to move up an octave) divided into 12 notes (A to A# is an increase in frequency x2^(1/12) as an example), and while 12 is 6x2 I wonder if they would have gone with that or some other way of dividing up the octave into a multiple of six (6, 18, 24, etc.), or maybe not even use an octave to divide up, maybe use the tritone which is an interval of 6 notes? There's also lots of music scales that are composed of 7 notes (heptatonic scales) as well as 5 notes (pentatonic scales), would they choose to use 6 note (hexatonic) scales?

We have approximately 86400 seconds in a day, the Spherus Magnans have 129600 seconds in a day. Suddenly, it seems that 1,000 of their years is far longer than 1,000 of our own. Granted, Spherus Magna itself is larger than Earth, if the size comparison between the GSR and Earth is anything to go by, considering the robot itself was able to be built on and remain in the atmosphere of Spherus Magna. However, due to the difference in timekeeping, I am also inclined to believe Spherus Magna itself rotates faster than Earth does. Because even with the difference in time, the sheer size of the planet itself means it would absolutely have to rotate faster in order to complete the day/night cycle on time

Speaking of time, I always wondered how Voporak's powers worked, I'll be using time trap as reference.
During the fights he's attacked with a builder and flames, which seem to erode or extinguish (without an outside source) instead of hitting him faster (velocity= distance /time). Seemingly speeding up time while halting the objects in his vicinity.
But excluding air - as he seems to breath at a normal observers time rate as he doesn't uses up all the air faster than fresh air can enter his time field, he isn't surrounded by little cyclones due to turbulence and Makuta managed to knock him out with vaccum in normal time instead of draining him, had he to use power for eons.
He accidentally ages the shadowed one, but the sudden aging 3000 years, didn't seem to completely have rotted/ killed away the organic components (as if one could survive millenia without breathing, therefore air seems to be unaffected (the brain and consciousness seem to be unaffected too) ).
Last the time field doesn't seem to be surrounding him as a sphere, while he managed to pulverize a rahkshi army from afar, his standing ground remained.
My theories are that his powers actually either disrupt and agitate particles or that he influences protodermis in a minuscule level. Therefore he apperantly has no effects on liquids and gases but on solids and the rapid distribution of heat or simply influences the protodermis bonds or let it absorb heat. Either way he would have to developed a strange awareness to notice the vahi having a similar effect in its corner of the universe. Seeing as protodermis has a consciousness, able of manifesting itself wherever it finds enough of its essence (toa metru and helryx encounters) I find the latter theory more likely.
If you're still reading this, You are a Legend and I'd be happy to hear/read your take.

Honestly I think the Great beings just used base 6 and base 10 for different purposes following from this there's 36 hours in a day because 6x6=36 hours and its 60 seconds to a minute and 60 minutes to an hour both because of out of story reasons but also because 6 times 10.

There is evidence to suggest that magnans count in base 6 or base 12, compare the numbers 0 to 3 and 6 to 9 and how they are similar shapes. Could we argue that the singular glyphs for both 10 and 11 were simply omitted for ease of use by the audience?

I have always wondered this. What are the environmental implications of the GSR *leaving* a system. We know it uses sci-fi hocus-pocus to get around the whole "shattering a planet on landing" thing. However, (assuming the island on the face is the same each time.) It is still going to cause an entire jungle's worth of organic material (unsure if it is protodermis) to burn. Not to mention the chunks of land falling off. Since protodermis is what it is, what kind of devastating effects could traces of it have in an ocean ecosystem? What about stranded beings since we know MU inhabitants can easily leave under the right circumstances. Rahi could cause total ecological collapse. (The ecology needed to support the extreme creatures that Rahi are as well as the new SM environment could be a whole other video.)

on the topic of numeric bases, I'm very convinced that all matoran-derived species (matoran, toa, turaga, etc) have 3 fingers on each hand, resulting in base 6 numerics. There are a few places this doesn't exactly work (*cough* kanoka codes *cough*) but I think this might be useable for other topics

@@Korohpu uhm, actually... (takes deep breath, read at your own risk) :
In legends of metru nui Krekka only has two fingers and a thumb per hand, while Makuta having five digits uses a shadow hand with only four (while other Makuta in the comics used four fingers for their shadow hands).
In Web of shadow all Charakters except the Toa hordika have four digits, the Toa hordika being left with three digits post mutation.
In the Legend reborn every single character including the Matoran and the great spirit robot also only have three fingers and one thumb per hand.
Regarding the sets with the exception of mutran, the Toa Mata two finger hand? Irnakk Zamor hand? and Mctoran hand? all built hands used three fingers and one thumb (Axonn, Brutaka, Hydraxon toa mata nui and ultimate Dume. The combiners like the shadowed one or the gukko Makuta combiner also only had two fingers and one thumb, while Ancient of the same species had a finger extra.
I figure there is no certain rule for hands, maybe hands were an extra ( looking at Gali mata and Mahri matoran) and Protodermians just switched between types depending on their tasks and preferences.

    • @Korohpu
      @Korohpu Рік тому

@@toafellha8130 Of course there's a huge variety in both sets & story, but I feel like what should have the most weight are Matoran (since they are the dominant species of the MU) and movie depictions (which imo are the most in-story accurate ones) (not TLR though because the models in that movie were decisively set-accurate).

    • @toafellha8130
      @toafellha8130 Рік тому

@@Korohpu While I do prefer my mocs with five digits, I doubt there is a general truth/rule nor do I think singling out the Og movies' depictions is a sound basis for ruling out the theory. While I see why one might reject the games (Heroes four digits) or even sets, I can give you some lore examples in favor of divergence of hands even among matoran:
      - In the Ignition comics (first drawn by Stuart Sayger) no. 1 while speaking of the far gone past (prior Karzahni repair) the Matoran have claws/tools for hands, in no. 11 after Matoro's sacrifice, Matoran are once again shown with claws/drills/ tools for hands and even Turaga Vakama has a (minifigure) claw.
BUT in the later more set accurate run (now by Leigh Gallagher) in no. 14 Pohatu creates a (human) five digits hand to grab Antroz and Turaga Dume has five digits in his depiction in no. 15.
So maybe it doesn't really matter or its a local or cultural thing with the metru matoran requiring five digits to operate finer machinery, while the others are more flexible in the more rural/ wilder/ uncultivated lands of the MU.
      - In the dropped three finger island plot we get another point for knowledge tower's theory, plus the Great Spirit Robot and Toa Mata do share similarities in their body design
      - I think it's a tad strange to exclude TLR for set accuracy, while using the original trilogy with its liberties as the most accurate after all why do the Turaga have Bohrok Va body types, why do the Vakhi staff form part of their body wouldn't that hinder them from actually apprehending their targets or retrieving stolen goods? Why do Sidorak and Roodaka two complete different species carry their Rothuka on their backs exactly like the Hordika (can be seen well when Vakama gets command of the hord) ; while the mechanism would work for the hunchback hordika I strongly fear Rodaka's "hair" would get in the way, and lastly all the Toa magically teleport their tools out of their backs, especially Matau's wings on their own, that's a neat power mentioned nowhere else.
      - Then we have single cases of matoran experimenting with themselves, mainly the Nynrah, a special case could be gatherer who added to his armor,...
... and of course most noteworthy the Tohunga rebuilding themselves after defeating the Bohrok...
Is it really that far fetched that the Matoran Anatomy might VARY, did their programming ever stop them from adapting?
I think that would be all for the case of pluralism of hands among just matoran and Co. in the lore.
Another interesting story aspect is the devolution of the Mahri Matoran.
Due to the Pit Mutations they reverted back undoing the damage Karzahni inflicted, maybe they depict the purest baseform of the matoran. They use the same arm pieces as the Toa Mata who also originate from the dawn of time and like them their arms end in tools (like Sayger's matoran). The only other beings that use that arm piece are the Vakhi, who in the movies are depicted without hands. All the sets have the commonality of connecting the arm directly to Tools.
Thinking of no hands ... that's another commonality they share with Sidorak and Roodaka in set form.
So maybe it truly is up to preference/Assignment or they can switch, after all the Toa Mata regrew their organic components after awakening and if one can switch between faces/Kanohi why not hands, after all bionicle are modular (Kaita and Nui forms).
Now I'll be eagerly awaiting your rebuttal and maybe you can answer me this: What are Pohatu Mata's Hands after all he already has his reinforced foots as tools. 😁

So does that mean that Matoran Universe is older than 101,000 years, by our timekeeping? In story, it's given that Mata Nui's mission would take 100,000 years, and he slept an additional 1,000 years. So wouldn't that mean that his mission was 150,000 years to us, and he slept 1,500 years?

Now the question remains: How long is one year for Spherus Magna+MU? We know that according to the Mata Nui Chronicles in 2010 that Matoro's Sacrifice was only a year ago. That could mean all the events of 01-03, 06, 07 and 08 took place in that same year. Now if we are to apply the real life earth years during the series into the math, that could mean One Spherus Magnan Year is equivalent to approximately 5 to 6 Earth Years. And if a Spherus Magna day is 36 hours, it would have to take 1 1/2 Earth days to complete that day cycle, and thats all I got cause trying to figure out a week and month is just gonna take too much math to figure out. Any mathematicians and astronomers out there, please make this happen.
